Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Doctor and his companions are frequently encountering supernatural beings. What kind of supernatural being is the subject of "Hide"?

Answer: A ghost

"Hide" is an old-fashioned ghost story, although the ghost turns out to be unlike what any of them expected. It features spectral images, scary noises, mysterious writing, and being "Doctor Who" there is quite a lot of running. The 11th Doctor encounters alien vampires in "Vampires of Venice" and the 10th Doctor fights alien witches in "The Shakespeare Code".
2. What is the setting for most of the "Doctor Who" episode "Hide"?

Answer: A spooky mansion, 1974

Most of "Hide" is set in Caliburn House, a spooky mansion. According to Alec Palmer (Dougray Scott) at the start, the date is November 25, 1974. The Doctor does take the TARDIS to the start of the Earth, but is there for only a brief period. There are several scenes inside the TARDIS, including a great dialogue between the Doctor and Clara about how the Doctor views humanity.
The mansion scenes were shot at Tyntesfield, a National Trust property in Wraxall, North Somerset. The estate dates back to the 1500s, but the mansion was built in the 1860s.
3. What is the name of the psychic assistant?

Answer: Emma

Emma Grayling is played by Jessica Raine. Towards the end, it turns out she is the real reason the Doctor has come to 1974 - to find out more about Clara Oswald. Emma is in love with Alec Palmer, and by the end of the episode, it appears they will get together. Emma's psychic abilities help create a portal that allows them to contact the ghost.
Jessica Raine has been the star of the BBC series "Call the Midwife" and plays Verity Lambert, one of the creators of "Doctor Who", in "An Adventure in Space and Time".
4. Where does the Doctor get the blue crystals he needs for the psycho-chronogram?

Answer: Metebelis 3

Metebelis 3 is visited several times by the Third Doctor, in "The Green Death" and "Planet of the Spiders". It is part of the Acteon Galaxy, and is famous for its blue moon and blue crystals which can channel psychic powers. Long time fans of the show know that Smith pronounces "Metebelis" quite differently than Jon Pertwee.

There are several other sly references to the Third Doctor, including the Doctor being a meddling official from a government ministry - a frequent problem for Pertwee's Doctor. Malcassario is the site of the last humans (and the Master) in "Utopia". Messaline is where "The Doctor's Daughter" took place. Miasimia Goria is a planet controlled by The Rani in "The Mark of the Rani".
5. What does the Doctor yell when he jumps into the pocket universe?

Answer: geronimo

"Geronimo", of course. It is one of the catchphrases of the 11th Doctor. He uses it when rebooting the universe in "The Big Bang". If you want to see the Doctor saying "Geronimo", watch "The End of Time (Part 2)" right after he regenerates, "The Eleventh Hour" as he leaves 11-year old Amy, "The Beast Below", "A Christmas Carol" and "The Almost People".
6. What is the name of the young woman the Doctor rescues from the pocket universe?

Answer: Hila Tecorian

Hila, played by Kemi-Bo Jacobs, is a time traveler who got stranded in a pocket universe. The Doctor determines she is the reality behind the legend of the ghost. He enters the pocket universe, and finds and rescues her before getting trapped himself. It turns out that Hila is a descendant of Emma Grayling and Alec Palmer.
Olivia Dunham is from the science fiction series "Fringe". Idris is the young woman who absorbs the TARDIS consciousness in "The Doctor's Wife".
7. In the episode "Hide", when the Doctor is caught in the woods, he states: "I am the Doctor, and I am..." what?

Answer: afraid

The Doctor says that he is afraid trapped in a very scary woods, with an unknown monster, located in a pocket universe that is about to collapse any second. The monster turns out not to be angry, but frustrated, as he cannot get back to his mate. The Doctor returns to the pocket universe a second time to rescue the Crooked Man.

The scenes in the spooky woods were shot at Margam Country Park in southern Wales.
8. When the Doctor asks "What's the opposite of bliss?", what does Clara answer?

Answer: Carlisle

The Doctor then states, "Yes! Yes, ignorance is Carlisle." There is some debate as to whether this is a slam on the British city of Carlisle, or an obscure reference to British philosopher Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881). The city is the largest town in Cumbria, and is located roughly 10 miles south of the Scottish border. Carlisle is near Hadrian's Wall. Blackpool is the hometown of Jenna-Louise Coleman, who plays Clara. Penrith is a small town in Cumbria. Cardiff is the capital of Wales, and is the home base for the production offices of "Doctor Who".

Many episodes have been filmed in the Cardiff area.
9. In the "Doctor Who" episode "Hide", Alec Palmer is seeking redemption from his past as a what?

Answer: Spy

Towards the start of the episode, the Doctor says that Palmer was a member of the Baker Street Irregulars. This was a group of the Special Operations Executive during World War II which did engage in exactly the type of sabotage the Doctor was talking about. Palmer speaks with regret about sending people to their deaths; the Doctor sympathizes.
The timing seems a bit off, as actor Dougray Scott was 45 at the time of shooting, meaning he would have had to have been a teenager fighting in World War II. Perhaps Alec Palmer is older than he seems.
Dougray Scott plays former spy, now ghosthunter, Alec Palmer. He is probably best known as the bad guy in "Mission Impossible II".
10. Who wrote "Hide", the ninth episode in season 7 of "Doctor Who"?

Answer: Neil Cross

This was Neil Cross' second script for "Doctor Who" after "The Rings of Akhaten". This episode was actually filmed before "Rings of Akhaten". Cross is the creator of the BBC police procedural "Luther".
Jamie Payne directed "Hide", which was his first work on "Doctor Who". He has directed episodes of several other BBC series. Aidan Cook was the actor in the Crooked Man costume. He was also the Mummy in "The Rings of Akhaten". Marcus Wilson is a producer with the BBC and was one of the producers on "Hide".
