Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Clara riding when she enters the TARDIS at the start of "The Day of the Doctor"?

Answer: Motorcyle

Clara rides her motorcycle straight into the TARDIS, and even closes the door by snapping her fingers. Clara has become a teacher since we last saw her, and the Doctor is brushing up on his quantum mechanics. The horse does not show up until later. The motorcycle is apparently the same one the Doctor rides in "The Bells of Saint John" (2013).
2. "The Day of the Doctor" begins much as "The Eleventh Hour" did, with the Doctor hanging onto the TARDIS for dear life as it flies over London. Where does the UNIT helicopter set down the Doctor?

Answer: Trafalgar Square

The Doctor lands in Trafalgar Square after flying past the statue of Lord Nelson. The Square has been open since 1844, and is one of London's most important public spaces. It is the site of both political protests and public celebrations. It is also the home of the National Gallery of Art, which plays an important role in "The Day of the Doctor."
Leicester Square is a few blocks North, while the palace is directly southwest along The Mall. The Tower of London is about a mile east, and also plays a key role in this episode.
3. What words does the War Doctor blast into the wall with a laser gun?

Answer: No More

"No More" is a key theme to "The Day of the Doctor." As he is wandering through the desert, the War Doctor (John Hurt) gives a dramatic speech warning the Time Lords and Daleks about "No More" and how we will act to end the war. The interface for the Moment actually teases the War Doctor about his pomposity.
4. What former companion returns as The Moment, a super-weapon designed by the Time Lords?

Answer: Billie Piper (Rose)

Billie Piper returns to "Doctor Who" after a five year absence to portray the interface for The Moment, the weapon which can destroy Gallifrey and end the war. She states she is either Rose Tyler or the "Bad Wolf" version of Rose Tyler.
Piper, born in September 1982, was one of England's biggest pop stars before she began acting in 2003. She played Rose Tyler when "Doctor Who" began again in 2005, and left the series in July 2006. Piper was enormously popular as Rose, and won several awards for her performance.
5. What kind of monsters are the Doctor and UNIT fighting in 20th century London?

Answer: Zygons

The Zygons first appear in "Terror of the Zygons" (1975), in which the Fourth Doctor battles giant rubber sucker monsters who are attempting to use the Loch Ness Monster to take over the Earth. While the Zygons are mentioned briefly in "The Pandorica Opens" and "The Power of Three" this is their first appearance on-screen since 1975.

The Zygons are a shape shifting race, and take the appearance of Queen Elizabeth I and UNIT chief Kate Lethhbridge-Stewart, among others. David Tennant has stated the Zygons are his favorite monster from "Doctor Who" so perhaps it's appropriate he kisses one. There are Daleks in "The Day of the Doctor" but they are on Gallifrey during the Time War.
6. All three versions of the Doctor in "The Day of the Doctor" wear the fez.

Answer: False

Both Ten (David Tennant) and Eleven (Matt Smith) don the fez, but the War Doctor never does. The Fez has quite a journey - from 20th century London to 16th century England to Gallifrey, and presumably back, because it does wind up in the display case.
7. According to the Tenth Doctor, how many children died when Gallifrey was destroyed in the Time War?

Answer: 2.47 billion

The War Doctor asks the other Doctors if they ever counted the number of children killed. The Tenth Doctor answers "2.47 billion" after the Eleventh Doctor claims he forgot the number.
8. What is the only thing that the Tenth Doctor does NOT insult Queen Elizabeth I about?

Answer: Her clothes

He does not mention her clothing. He calls her hair unconvincing, her teeth atrocious, and says she has breath that could stun a horse. When Elizabeth reveals she is the real queen, the Doctor tries to backtrack, and does so very badly. Despite that, she insists the Doctor marry her, and they do get married. Considering the Doctor hops into the TARDIS right after the wedding, and likely never sees her again, the scene from "The Shakespeare Code" (2007) where Elizabeth calls the Doctor her "mortal enemy" makes more sense.
9. What piece of apparel from a past Doctor does Osgood wear?

Answer: The Fourth Doctor's scarf

Osgood is wearing the Fourth Doctor's scarf, and the Doctor even comments on it when they are outside the National Gallery. The Fourth Doctor actually wore several scarves during his tenure. The basic pattern is red, green, chartreuse, tan, brown, purple and grey. During season 18, the scarf is rose, rust, merlot and purple.
10. What convenience food does the Eleventh Doctor compare the time stasis cubes to?

Answer: Cup-A-Soup

Cup-A-Soup is actually a brand name. In the United States and Canada it is owned by Lipton, while in the UK it is owned by Premier Foods, which took over from Campbell's in 2008. Minestrone, chicken noodle and tomato are among the most popular varieties of soup.

In England, it is actually sold as Batchelors Cup-A-Soup. The soup consists of dehydrated ingredients to which hot water is added. Shortly after making the Cup-A-Soup reference, Matt Smith (in classic Eleventh Doctor fashion) rejects it as an appropriate frame of reference.

The War Doctor asks at one point "What is Cup-A-Soup?" Perhaps the Eleventh Doctor learned of Cup-A-Soup when he was hanging out with Craig Owens in "The Lodger" (2010). By the way, beans are evil - bad, bad beans
11. How many Doctors arrive to save Gallifrey?

Answer: 13

GALACTIC SPOILER: The Doctors come up with a plan to save Gallifrey by freezing it in a pocket universe. They position their TARDISes (TARDII?) around the planet and essentially make it vanish. The episode features stock footage of all the previous Doctors, appearing to position themselves.

When the General says "All twelve of them", his assistant replies "No Sir, all thirteen" and viewers are given a brief glimpse of Peter Capaldi's eyes. This marks the first time in series history that a Doctor has been shown prior to the episode featuring his regeneration.
12. When the Tenth Doctor says, "I don't wanna go," how does the Eleventh Doctor respond?

Answer: "He always says that:"

The line "I don't wanna go" is a nod to Tennant's line right before regenerating in "The End of Time" (January 2010). Given that he knows what lies ahead, it adds extra meaning to the line now.
13. What former Doctor returns as "The Curator"?

Answer: Tom Baker

Tom Baker, who is often regarded as the most popular Doctor, makes a surprise cameo at the end of the 50th Anniversary special. He gives several hints to Matt Smith about the Doctor's possible future, in a conversation filled with winks and nods. Tom Baker was the longest serving Doctor during the classic series, playing the role from June 1974 to March 1981.

He appeared in 41 stories over 172 episodes. Baker's Doctor was known for his long multi-colored scarf, wild hair and goofy manner. If you want to see the other three Doctors, check out "The Five(ish) Doctors Rebooted," a parody film directed by Davison.
14. According to the Curator, what is the proper name of the painting?

Answer: Gallifrey Falls No More

When the Eleventh Doctor comments that there are two titles, the Curator corrects him: "One title. Gallifrey Falls No More," indicating the Doctors have been successful in rescuing Gallifrey. The painting is notable for being in three dimensions, an aspect of Time Lord art that comes in handy when the Doctors have to break into the Black Archive.
15. Who directed "The Day of the Doctor"?

Answer: Nick Hurran

This was Nick Hurran's fifth time directing "Doctor Who". His past episodes are "The Girl Who Waited" (2011), "The God Complex" (2011), "Asylum of the Daleks" (2012) and "The Angels Take Manhattan" (2012). Hurran also directed the 2009 mini-series "The Prisoner". Moffat, who has been show-runner since the start of 2010, wrote the episode. Faith Penhale was the executive producer. Paul Kasey is the guy running around in the monster costume; in this case he was one of the Zygons. Kasey has appeared in numerous episodes as a monster, starting with being one of the Autons in "Rose" (2005). For a look at him outside a monster costume, he played Nephew in "The Doctor's Wife" (2011).
