Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What distinguished British actress played Mrs Gillyflower?

Answer: Diana Rigg

Diana Rigg has been a fanboy favorite since the 1960s, when she played ultra-hip super-agent Emma Peel on "The Avengers". Rigg is also a Bond girl, having played James Bond's wife in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". More recently, she has appeared in "Game of Thrones" as The Queen of Thrones.
Jean Marsh is probably best known for her work in "Upstairs, Downstairs" but she has deep connections to "Doctor Who". Marsh was married to Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor, from 1955 to 1960, and appeared as Sara Kingdom in "The Daleks' Masterplan".
Judi Dench played M, James Bond's boss, in seven films from 1995 to 2012. Helen Mirren is quite famous for playing queens, including winning an Academy Award for her portrayal of Elizabeth I. Rigg, Dench and Mirren are all Dames of the British Empire, while Marsh is only an OBE.
2. What is the setting for "The Crimson Horror"?

Answer: Yorkshire in 1893

The story is set in Yorkshire in 1893. The Doctor's return to Victorian England is part of his quest to unravel the mystery that is Clara Oswald.
London in 1892 is the setting for "The Snowmen", the 2012 Christmas Special which is the last time we saw the Paternoster gang: Madame Vastra the Silurian, Jenny Flint and Strax the Sontaran. We first meet them in "A Good Man Goes to War".London 1953 is the setting for "The Idiot's Lantern" a season two episode set around the coronation of Elizabeth II. The episode "Tooth and Claw" where the Tenth Doctor and Rose meet Queen Victoria, is set in Scotland 1879.
Throughout season seven, there have been references to past Doctors. It continues in "Crimson Horror" with the Doctor mentioning "A gobby Australian he had to get back to Heathrow Airport," a clear reference to Tegan Jovanka, a companion of the Fifth Doctor. The Doctor also says "Brave heart" to Clara, a phrase the Fifth Doctor often used with Tegan.
There are also several Fourth Doctor references. The using salt to fight evil reference links to "Image of the Fendahl" and the Romani superstition about seeing things in the eyes of dead people is brought up in "The Ark in Space".
3. What is the name of the company town run by Mrs Gillyflower?

Answer: Sweetville

Sweetville is the name of the factory town, named after the mysterious partner of Mrs. Gillyflower. The town has been designed for "the fittest and most beautiful" people. This makes Jenny Flint the logical person to infiltrate. Mrs Gillyflower has been preserving the "fit and beautiful" people for a very sinister purpose. The other places are all real British company towns. Port Sunlight, established in Cheshire in 1888, was built for employees of Lever Brothers. Bourneville, which was started near Birmingham in 1895, was established by George and Richard Cadbury, the chocolate tycoons. Creswell was built by the Bolsover mining corporation in 1896.
4. What disability does Mrs Gillyflower's daughter Ada have?

Answer: She is blind

Ada is blind. She was blinded by experiments carried out by her mother testing the toxicity of the leech venom. Ada is played by Rachael Stirling, Diana Rigg's real daughter. It is the first time mother and daughter have worked together, even though Stirling has been acting since 1996.
Stirling is a quite distinguished stage and screen actress, and has been nominated for two Olivier Awards for her work in British theater.
5. Who rescues the Doctor when he is chained up?

Answer: Jenny

When Jenny discovers the Doctor, he is in very bad shape. He has been poisoned by the crimson horror, cannot speak and can barely move. Thanks to the magic of the sonic screwdriver, he is able to reverse the effects, and even come up with a fresh set of clothes. Ada saves the Doctor when her mother wants him destroyed, and calls him "my monster."
After restoring himself, the Doctor tells Jenny "Just when you think your favorite lock-picking Victorian chambermaid will never turn up" and kisses her. After she slaps him, the Doctor says "You have no idea how good that feels."
In a nod to "The Avengers", Jenny is dressed in a leather catsuit and beats up the bad guys.
6. An urchin boy gives directions to Strax. What does he say his name is?

Answer: Thomas Thomas

In a not so subtle joke, the boy gives instructions that sound like a GPS system, and then reveals that his name is Thomas Thomas (Tom Tom). The urchin boy is played by Jack Oliver Hudson.
Garmin is a leading maker of GPS systems. Parkinson is the scientist who perfected the system for global positioning satellites.
7. What type of creature does "Mr Sweet" turn out to be?

Answer: A leech

Mr Sweet is a leech which has attached itself to Mrs Gillyflower and driven her completely insane.
"I'm the Doctor, you're nuts, and I'm going to stop you," our hero warns her. Madame Vastra notes that the crimson horror is similar to a toxin that killed her people 65 million years earlier. Mrs Gillyflower has harvested the poison, and intends to use it to kill as many people as possible.
8. Who destroys the control panel for the poison machine?

Answer: Clara with the chair

Clara smashes the panel with a chair. The Doctor says, "I've got a sonic screwdriver" and Clara responds, "I've got a chair." With the panel in smoking ruins, the Doctor simply says, "Yeah, that worked." The Doctor later uses the same chair to smash a window. Ada does use her cane to smash Mr. Sweet to bits, rendering the Doctor's efforts to act humanely towards the creature rather moot.
9. Who confronts Clara with the secret about her time traveling at the end of "The Crimson Horror"?

Answer: Angie and Artie Maitland

Angie (Eve de Leon Allen) and Artie (Kassius Carey Johnson) are the kids that Clara has been the nanny for. By using the Internet, they have discovered pictures of Clara from 1974, 1983 and Victorian England. The kids threaten to tell their father about Clara's adventures. We see Clara's father in "The Rings of Akhaten" very briefly, but not in the next four episodes. UNIT has made several appearances in the new show, but not in this episode.
10. Who wrote the "Doctor Who" episode "The Crimson Horror"?

Answer: Mark Gatiss

"The Crimson Horror" marked Mark Gatiss' sixth episode of "Doctor Who." He wrote "Cold War" earlier in season seven. Gatiss began writing "Doctor Who" fiction back in 1992, and has written several novels and audioplays. Gatiss is a close associate of Steven Moffat - they created "Sherlock" together, and Gatiss has written several episodes of that show as well as playing Mycroft Holmes.
Saul Metzstein was the director for "The Crimson Horror". This was his fourth "Doctor Who" after "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship", "A Town Named Mercy" and "The Snowmen".
Dan Starkey is the actor behind Strax. He has played several different Sontarans on "Doctor Who" as well as Strax. Alan Davis is a British comic book artist; he created the Crimson Crusader.
