Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Catching Shadow Pokemon isn't mandatory to beat the main game, but it is mandatory if the player wants to experience everything this game truly has to offer. How many Shadows are in this game?

Answer: 48

47 out of 48 of these Shadows can be caught in any order, and do not have any particular story based prerequisite for them to become available, apart from reaching the trainer who has them. The 48th and very final Shadow, Togetic, can only be acquired once the other 47 have been caught.
2. Taking the Mt Battle 100 area challenge is quite the commitment. Amongst the 100 trainers the player needs to fight, Genius Sorority took the liberty of sprinkling in an Easter egg for one of them. The 81st trainer's team directly references a "Pokemon" movie that released around the launch of this game. What movie is being referenced here?

Answer: "Destiny Deoxys"

In this battle, the trainer wields a series of Pokemon who belonged to a few different side characters throughout this movie, such as Mightyena and Gardevoir.
3. Ho-Oh can be acquired in this game, but the process to do so is extremely tedious. Which of the following is a prerequisite to acquire Ho-Oh?

Answer: Purify all Shadows

Once all 48 Pokemon have been snagged and purified, the player must then go through all 100 Mt Battle areas without ever once accessing the PC, evolving any of their Pokemon, or teaching any new moves via TM. These 100 battles must all be finished consecutively, in one sitting. Upon defeating the 100th and final area with these conditions met, the player can acquire Ho-Oh.

Sadly, at this point, the game would have been 100% completed and Ho-Oh couldn't be used to actually accomplish anything in game. As such, this was likely a means to get the player to purchase connectivity hardware for their GameCube and Gameboy, so that they could then trade Ho-Oh to their GBA game. Of course, 2005 was some time ago, so few players if any actually possess the means to do this today.
4. In The Under, the player will meet an old man spewing incomprehensible gibberish. To allow this man to speak properly again, the player must find his Metal Teeth and return them to him. What is the reward for doing so?

Answer: L-Disk

To find this man's teeth will require the use of the D-Disk. The D-Disk can be found on Gonzap's desk in the Snagem Hideout, so it'll be a long time upon initially meeting this man before the player can actually help him.

Once the player has the D-Disk, they can simply use it in The Under's UFO transport and pick the item up off the ground shortly in front of them.

The man will reward the player with the L-Disk, an item used to bring the UFO to a location where a treasure chest is. Inside the chest lies the Amulet Coin, a held item which will help the player earn more money for winning a battle.
5. The Intimidate ability is arguably the greatest ability in franchise history in the context of a double battle setting. As such, it would be a good idea for the player to go snag Pokemon with this ability. How many snaggable Pokemon have the Intimidate ability?

Answer: Three

The earliest available Intimidater would be Hitmontop, who can be initially snagged at Relic Forest. If the player fails to snag it there, it can be acquired again at the Shadow Pokémon Lab, then again at the Snagem Hideout.

The next earliest would be Stantler. It's initially encountered in The Under before being acquirable again at the Snagem Hideout should the player fail the first encounter.

Finally, Granbull can be caught at Realgam Tower. If the player fails here, it can be encountered later at the Snagem Hideout.
6. Most snaggable Shadow Pokemon keep their Shadow movesets for the entire game until purified. There is one exception, as this cheating Cipher Admin showcases. What is the only Shadow Pokemon whose moveset can be changed prior to purification?

Answer: Suicune

Cipher Admin Venus can be fought in three locations: in order, The Under, Realgam Tower, then the Deep Colosseum. During the first two encounters, her Suicune knows Shadow Rush, Leer, Gust and Surf. During the final encounter, it will swap Surf for Hydro Pump, and this will be the move the player gets should they snag and then purify Suicune here.

It is ordinarily impossible to change the moves on a Shadow Pokemon. Even moves which the Pokemon in question would typically be able to learn are unteachable, as the game does not allow the player to overwrite moves on a Pokemon until it is purified. This is why Venus is a cheater, as she clearly was able to do so with her not-purified Suicune.
7. Hyper Mode can be quite the doozy if the player avoids addressing it and tries their luck coping with it. Which of the following can a Hyper Mode Pokemon do, should they disobey the player?

Answer: Return to their ball

If afflicted with Hyper Mode, the only move the Pokemon will reliably use is Shadow Rush. Trying to get it to use anything else poses an 80% chance of disobedience. If the Pokemon disobeys, they can do a litany of things. They can choose a random, different move and use it on a random target, even their own teammate. They can literally attack the MC himself, or the opposing trainer, though this doesn't actually do anything other than waste a turn. They can attempt to prematurely use a held item if they have one, wasting a turn trying if they don't. Finally, the Hyper Mode Pokemon can just return to its ball and force the player to send something else out.

As such, either sticking with Shadow Rush or simply using the "Call" option to get rid of Hyper Mode is the simple, correct choice.
8. Hilariously, the player can find a key to Pyrite Town's jail just laying about. The player can actually free prisoners using it. Perhaps even funnier is that not every prisoner freed will actually escape their cell. How many prisoners will actually flee if the player frees them?

Answer: One

An unidentified NPC with the Chaser title is the only one who actually capitalizes on this opportunity. In the now empty cell, the player can pick up the TM for Thief.

Opening any other cell will result in the prisoners in question simply sitting or standing in place. Doing this is actually eventually required though, as the player can unlock a cell with the sleeping Ferma inside it, pilfer an Elevator Key off of her person, then use it to initially access The Under.
9. Shadow Ball is a move many Pokemon can use, benefit greatly from, and it's TM should therefore be sought after by non-speedrunning players. Where can the TM for Shadow Ball be obtained?

Answer: The Under

The player must attain a four game win streak three separate times at The Under's Colosseum. Doing so will cause them to be rewarded with the TM for Shadow Ball.

Shadow Ball is the only teachable Ghost type move, apart from Hidden Power, that the player can acquire. Ghost has fantastic neutral coverage, and the move itself is strong, so finding a user for it should be pretty easy.
10. Gonzap's name and face are spewed everywhere across Pyrite Town. His second in commands name may be a bit trickier to remember, but he's the first evil NPC the player fights in the entire game, and he ends up making a return in "XD: Gale of Darkness". Who is Gonzap's second in command?

Answer: Wakin

Wakin is a complete pushover when battled, as you might expect for such an early game encounter.

In "XD: Gale of Darkness", Wakin ends up using a Gloom to put the MC to sleep and steal their Snag Machine. He is later fought in this game, and is much, much more formidable than he was in "Colosseum".
