At first Ivanova refuses to sit shiva for her father, so Rabbi Koslov goes over her head and talks to Sinclair. As a friend, Sinclair talks to Ivanova -- Sinclair: "You are the best officer I've ever served with, Ivanova. I couldn't run this station without you.

But I also consider you a friend. And as your friend, I'm telling you it does no good to bottle up your feelings. Your father is dead. You need to express your grief or it'll eat you up." Ivanova: "I appreciate your concern, Commander, and your friendship, but...my feelings are my own, and how I display them, or not, is my choice. Now, if I may return to my duty." Sinclair: "Susan, before you make that choice, make sure you know what it is you are really feeling."

Answer: Mutai

The Mutari are the fighters, and the Muta-Do is the head of the Mutai. Humans have never participated in the Mutai before and Walker Smith is hoping to be the first. The aliens do not hold humans in high esteem. After Walker Smith tries to talk the Muta-Do into letting him fight, the Muta-Do says the following: "You intrude upon our worlds, make mockery of our customs, meddle in matters you do not understand, but humans have no place in the Mutari.

It is ours and we will not let you dishonor it.

Not now. Not ever."

Answer: Caliban

Caliban witnesses the exchange between Walker Smith and the Muta-Do. He tells Walker that there is a way that he can participate in the fight, but he must do it respectably and within the system. So after the first fight, the Muta-Do offers a challenge with the Sho-Rin to anyone who wants to accept it. Walker Smith accepts the challenge and in order for the Sho-Rin to keep his honor, he must accept the challenge, even if it is against a human.

It is a Russian naming tradition that the daughter be given the additional 'a' at the end of Ivanov, signifying daughter of Ivanov. Sophie is Susan's telepath mother that committed suicide after being on the Psi Corps sleepers. We witnessed the death of Andrei Ivanov in the episode "Born to the Purple."

Answer: reigning champion of the fight

The Sho-Rin is the reigning champion of the Mutai. During this episode, the Sho-Rin was named Gyor. The fight against Gyor and Walker Smith results in a tie, and humans are now welcomed to fight in the Mutai.

Both times it was spoken by Walker Smith, once at the beginning of the episode, and once at the end. This is an important catch phrase, since Garibaldi was shot in the back by is own aide in "Chrysalis." -- "One of these days, Garibaldi, you are gonna learn to watch your back." -- "Watch your back."

The White Star liner arrives at and departs from Babylon 5 out docking bay 5 through customs area 7. For once it is not the Asimov making the run between Earth and Babylon 5. Both Rabbi Koslov and Walker Smith arrived on Babylon 5 on this ship.

This quote is spoken by Koslov to Ivanova when he is about to depart on the White Star without sitting shiva with her. At the last minute she decides that he should stay and sit shiva with her, since her father would have wanted it.

This was just a comical little bit while Ivanova and Koslov are dining in the Fresh Air restaurant. Koslov: "What did you say this was again?" Ivanova: "It's treel. It's...sort of fish, Centauri-raisen." Koslov: "Treel? It's kosher?" Ivanova: "That I can't say." Koslov: "Well, I don't recall treel being mentioned in Tora, so...Ah, wonderful!"
