1.0 "The Gathering" Trivia Quiz

Answer: Takashima

Lieutenant Commander Laurel Takashima (Tamlyn Tomita) only appeared in this episode and was replaced by Lieutenant Susan Ivanova (Claudia Christian). Takashima was originally supposed to be the infiltrator on staff, however, that part was taken over by Garibaldi's aide when Takashima was reassigned ("Chrysalis"). We can see a little of this in "The Gathering" as the assassin used Takashima's identicard to gain entry to Del Varner's quarters, guiding suspicion in her direction.

Answer: Ambassador Londo Mollari

The accent is a dead giveaway. Londo was probably chosen for this particular monologue since JMS, in his perfect planning, knew that he would be around from beginning to end and since the show is done as a sort of history of events, this makes sense (we see Londo as a young guy and old guy in the movie, "In the Beginning").

He was involved all the way through to his death and was present in all 5 seasons).

Answer: Dr. Benjamin Kyle

Carolyn Sykes was never again mentioned in the show since Sinclair hooked up with his old girlfriend, Catherine Sakai. Takashima was never mentioned after she was transferrred to a ship on the rim. Lyta Alexander was a major character in seasons 3-5.

In the episode "The Ragged Edge," Franklin accepts the position of head of xenobiological research at Earthdome. He mentions to Sheridan that he will be replacing Dr. Kyle, who had formerly occupied that position since sometime after leaving Babylon 5.

G'Kar, in a fit of rage, refuses to follow the requirement that the supply ship from Narn submit to a weapons search and asks that Takashima lets them dock without it. Takashima, as cool and monotone as ever, replies with the above line.

This is one of the classic lines spoken by Commander Sinclair about Babylon 5. He was taking Lyta through the alien sector to her new quarters. They discuss the purpose of Babylon 5 and what had happened to the previous 4 stations.

The enigmatic Vorlons have definitely kept their secrets well. When Sinclair asks Delenn for information on the Vorlon, she responds by asking if the humans have their own files. Sinclair replies: "Absolutely. Very large files. There's nothing in them, of course. How much do you have?" Delenn says that they have more than the humans and then changes the subject. Later, she gives him a data crystal with a selection of information she has chosen to reveal to him.

Garibaldi and Londo seem to have some sort of established friendship as seen by their friendly banter throughout the episode. Here's a great line said to Garibaldi by Londo during a run of bad luck in the casino: "You see, it's your fault. You're bad luck. I've always said that about him. Now, come on, come on. Look, you're a security chief. Shouldn't you be out securing something?"

Londo and Garibaldi have this conversation when Garibaldi tries to question Londo about the assassination attempt, since he had failed to turn up at the reception for Kosh. Here is the relevant quote -- Londo: "Do you know why I am here? I'm here to grovel before your wonderful Earth Alliance, in hopes of attaching ourselves to your destiny, like... what are those fish called on your planet that attach themselves to sharks?" Garibaldi: "Ramoras." Londo: "Yes. You make very good sharks Mr. Garibaldi. We were pretty good sharks ourselves once, but somehow, along the way, we forgot how to bite." -- I was really impressed that Garibaldi actually knew that answer.

This is the same conversation as in the previous question, and here is the rest of that quote -- "There was a time, when this whole quadrant belonged to us! What are we now? Twelve worlds and a thousand monuments to past glories, living off memories, stories, selling trinkets. My god man, we've become a tourist attraction! See the great Centauri Republic, open 9 to 5, Earth time."

Takashima was on duty in C&C when the jumpgate opened and the Vorlon ship came through the opening. She was quite distressed by this as they were not ready for his arrival. Here's the quote: "Damn, that's a Vorlon ship all right. Ambassador Kosh two days early. I was afraid he'd pull something like this."

Answer: G'Kar

Since the Narns have no telepaths, G'Kar wishes to obtain telepath DNA from Lyta, preferably through a direct mating, in order to try to breed a Narn telepath ("Would you prefer to be conscious or unconscious during the mating?"). As we learn in later episodes, the Narn telepaths were systematically exterminated by the Shadows during the Great War. Narn was occupied by the Shadows, and telepaths are a weapon against the Shadows.

Answer: power loss in the transport tube

There was a momentary power loss in the turbolift that prevented him from reaching the docking bay. During this delay, someone (who looks like Sinclair) attempts to assassinate Kosh. There is no record of the malfunction in station records, which leaves Sinclair without a valid alibi.

The image of Londo was never used. The Minbari impersonated Sinclair, Varner and Lyta.

Lyta scanned an unconscious Kosh while in medlab. She saw, through Kosh's perspective, Sinclair greeting him in the cargo bay and then attaching a patch to Kosh's 'hand.'

We learn this for the first time during a conversation between Carolyn Sykes and Sinclair -- Carolyn: "Jeff, this medal, you were on the Line, and you never told me?" Sinclair: "I didn't want to talk about it." Carolyn: "Why?" Sinclair: "I was a squad team leader when the call came in. We all knew it was a suicide mission, the Minbari had broken through, closing in. Every ship we had left was ordered to circle Earth. We had to stop them, no matter what it cost.

They came at us out of nowhere, we never had a chance.

The sky was full of stars, every star an exploding ship. One of ours. My team was blown out of the sky in less than a minute. Twelve ships. I managed to take out a fighter before they hit my stabilizers. I was losing power, I'd lost my team, and I figured if I was going to die I'd take someone out with me, so I targeted one of their heavy cruisers, hit my afterburners. I was going to ram them head on.

The last thing I remember is hurtling toward that cruiser, filling my screen. Big... my god so big.

Then, something passed in front of my eyes - I guess I blacked out from the acceleration. When I came to 24 hours later, the cruiser was gone. I checked in. They told me the war was over. The Minbari had surrendered." Carolyn: "Because of the Line." Sinclair: "No. We were beaten. We didn't stop them, they stopped themselves, and I wish to hell I knew why."

Answer: Minbari

After Sinclair damages the changeling net, we see that the assassin is a Minbari. The assassin was smuggled onto the station from the Narn transport. When asked by Sinclair why he tried to frame Sinclair he replied with the phrase: "There is a hole in your mind." We learn in future episodes that the 24 hours Sinclair can't remember from the Battle of the Line were actually wiped from his memory to conceal the truth of the Minbari surrender.

Answer: G'Kar

G'Kar took it upon himself to contact the Vorlon Empire about the vote. They instructed him to vote for them, breaking the deadlock and convicting Sinclair of the assassination attempt. G'Kar most likely did this to ensure that his part in the assassination attempt was never learned.

Sinclair found out about G'Kar's involvement in the assassination attempt and wanted to make sure G'Kar does not attempt to put the station at risk again. Sinclair told him that G'Kar had swallowed a tiny device in his drink and then said: "Oh it's nothing harmful ambassador.

It's just a location transmitt...see. It should dissolve in about 5 years. But until then ambassador, my friends in my warrior caste have this frequency. And if anything should happen to Babylon 5 they have instructions to track down that transmitter and...well why spoil the surprise." G'Kar storms out of the room and into the hallway, where Garibaldi walks by, makes a gesture like he's pressing a button on a remote and says "beep, beep." This confuses Londo who is also passing by at the same time, but has the desired effect on G'Kar. Sinclair later confesses to Garibaldi that there really was no transmitter in the drink.

This line is said after the assassin committed suicide. Sinclair was walking back from the blast site and Garibaldi and Delenn were heading towards him. Garibaldi says this to a very disheveled Sinclair in a classic Garibaldi delivery.

From C&C Takashima delivers the closing line: "Our docking bays stand ready to receive you. Babylon 5 is open for business." This was a great ender to the pilot and the perfect setup for the beginning of season 1.
