Difficult Mixed Trivia Questions

1. In the last century which song took the longest to reach number one on the UK singles chart?

From Quiz
The Misplaced General Knowledge Quiz Vol. 1

Answer: "Reet Petite" - Jackie Wilson

"Reet Petite" was written by Berry Gordy Jr./Tyran Carlo. It peaked at number six on the UK singles chart for Jackie Wilson in 1957. It peaked at number 62 on the Billboard Top 100 the same year. On re-release it was number one for four weeks on the UK singles chart in 1986/87 and made Jackie Wilson the seventh posthumous UK chart topper. "Reet Petite" by Jackie Wilson took 29 years 42 days to reach number one, 1957 - 1986. "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King took 25 years 244 days to reach number one, 1961 - 1987. "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers took 25 years 83 days to reach number one, 1965 - 1990. "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by The Hollies took 18 years 356 days to reach number one, 1969 - 1988. Submitted by shipyardbernie

2. Humanities: What would you do with a pierogi?

From Quiz Categorically Speaking

Answer: eat it

Pierogi, also called varenyky, are dumplings which originated in Eastern Europe. They are made from unleavened dough which is filled with meat, cheese, potatoes or fruit. These dumplings, found in Slavic, Baltic and other Eastern European cuisines, are known under various names.

3. Which country is referred to as "Saqartvelo" by its indigenous people?

From Quiz Mixing It Up-General Trivia

Answer: Georgia

In English, we call the country "Georgia," and refer to the language spoken by the people, as well as the people themselves, as "Georgian". In the Republic of Georgia, however, the locals call their country "Saqartvelo," while they refer to their language as "Kartuli," and to themselves as "Kartveli". Saint Giorgi (aka Saint George) is a highly revered historical and religious figure in Georgian history and society.

4. What is an octopus liable to do if a predator catches it?

From Quiz You've Got to Be Kidding!

Answer: Let one of its arms break off

If a predator captures an octopus, the octopus will actually allow one of its arms to break off. The arm, which has the ability to change colour, will drift off thus distracting the predator. While the predator goes after the arm, the 'armless' victim (no pun intended!) will escape. So, will the victim be armless forever? Luckily no, the lost arm will grow back. Answer: Mohandas

Gandhi's full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Educated in law in England, Gandhi was a principle proponent of non-violent civil disobedience as a way of overthrowing tyranny. He was assassinated in 1948 by Hindu extremists upset that he was prepared to deal with Pakistan. Most biographical works regarding Gandhi paint him as something of a saint. For a less hagiographic treatment, see "Freedom at Midnight" (1975) by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre. Collins was American and Lapierre French so neither has the inherent bias often demonstrated by British and Indian writers. "Mahatma" is a title bestowed on Gandhi. It comes from the Sanskrit words "maha" meaning "great" and "atma" meaning "soul". Indira Gandhi was India's first female Prime Minister and was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India. The surname Gandhi came from her marriage to Feroze Gandhi who was not related to Mohandas. Indira was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984 in retaliation for army operations against Sikhs occupying the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Rajiv Gandhi was Indira's oldest son and became PM of India on Indira's death. He was assassinated in 1991 by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (a Tamil liberation army in Sri Lanka) for sending Indian peacekeepers to Sri Lanka.

Midsummer men are plants (also called Live-long) of the Sedum family. In Medieval England, on midsummer eve, a young woman would plant Live-long as a means of finding out whether her young man was faithful to her. She would hang the potted plant in the house and keep an eye on the leaves. If the leaves bent to the right, it indicated her sweetheart's fidelity.
