*MAJOR SPOILERS FOR "CROOKEDSTAR'S PROMISE"!* Mapleshade, a ThunderClan warrior, fell in love with a RiverClan warrior named Appledusk. Her kits were recognized to be Appledusk's, and ThunderClan drove her out. When she tried to cross the river with her kits, they drowned, and Appledusk blamed Mapleshade for their deaths. Mapleshade swore revenge on Appledusk's entire family line, which eventually led to Crookedstar. Erin Hunter has confirmed that there will be a novella about Mapleshade called "Mapleshade's Vengeance."

His kittypet name is Rusty, and he can only be related to cats descended from him, and not those who are the same age as him: Sandstorm is not his sister, and he is not related to any cats from ThunderClan when he arrives as Rusty, so he is not in any way related to her.

Barkface then tells them that cats that eat them get sick, and usually die. When Leafpaw returns, she tells Firestar. Firestar then tells her to get rid of all the rabbits on the fresh-kill pile. Leafpaw is busy rolling one out of camp when Dappletail notices her. She asks if it's for the elders. Leafpaw explains, and after a brief argument, Dappletail starts tearing into the rabbit. The next day, she is complaining of bellyache. Cinderpelt does everything she can, but Dappletail dies anyway.

She went too close to the Thunderpath and was hit with a monster. She had followed Tigerclaw's scent, which was where Cinderpaw got hit. Fireheart later suspected it was a trap for Bluestar.
