Mixed Food and Drink Trivia Questions

92. A member of the Helianthus genus native to New England produces yellow flowers and an edible tuber that grows below ground. What is its common name?

From Quiz Eating New England

Answer: Jerusalem artichoke

The Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) produces a tuber which can be cooked like a potato. They can also be fermented and distilled into a type of brandy, but that is more common in Europe than in America. The plants can grow to 3 meters in height and will take over a garden area if not closely cultivated.

93. For several decades, the best selling marshmallow brand in the United States has been "Jet-Puffed". What company brand is on bags of "Jet-Puffed"?

From Quiz Marshmallow Clouds

Answer: Kraft

While Kraft Foods marshmallow division was taken over by Favorite Foods in 1996, they left the name "Kraft" on the bags of marshmallows. Doumak is another large marshmallow manufacturer, producing the "Campfire" and "Rocky Mountain" brands. Hershey specializes in candy, although marshmallow is used in some of their products. Dean focuses primarily on dairy products.

94. Some soup or broth recipes involve boiling meat bones. However, in some cases, bones can also be used in accompaniments for soup. In Germany and Hungary, which kind of meat soup is sometimes served with bone marrow balls?

From Quiz Bones, Blood, Butter

Answer: Beef soup

The name for this kind of soup is Markkloesschensuppe ('Markkloesschen' means 'marrow balls'). The dumplings are made with a combination of marrow from cooked beef bones, breadcrumbs, eggs, and nutmeg and parsley for flavouring.

95. Which food listed below will Andrew Zimmern, host of Bizarre Foods, NOT eat?

From Quiz I Can Believe I Ate The Whole Thing!

Answer: Durian fruit

Andrew Zimmern tried to eat Durian fruit on a couple episodes of Bizarre Foods, but had to spit it out due to the foul odor. Durian is native to Southeast Asia and really does smell bad in my opinion. My favorite hotel in Thailand will not allow guests to bring durian on their property if that is an indication of the smell.

96. In Southern Nigeria, kola nuts are a common staple in the dowry of a bride as well as during weddings. What does the kola nut symbolize for the Igbo tribe?

From Quiz Eat, Drink and Be Marry

Answer: Ability for a couple to heal their difficulties

The Igbo tribe from southern Nigeria commonly use kola nuts for medicinal purposes. These nuts are high in caffeine and, when chewed, they ease hunger as well as provide energy to the consumer. This common staple in a bride's dowry is also presented at weddings to symbolize the couple's ability to heal differences within their marriage. The wedding is not considered to be complete until a kola nut has been shared between the groom, bride and parents of both.

97. This traditional Korean alcoholic beverage is often transliterated as Makkolli or Makgeolli. How is this beverage most aptly described in Western terms?

From Quiz Selected Cuisine and Beverages: Korean Style

Answer: unstrained rice wine

Makgeolli has often been touted as a healthier beverage than comparable alcoholic drinks. It contains beneficial bacteria, vitamins and fiber. It is usually served from a bowl in order to keep the ingredients from separating. Its milky consistency doesn't really resemble typical wines, but "rice wine" is the most popular translation of this popular beverage.

98. After enjoying some roasted weenies on an open fire, I like to have a cold dessert roasted on the fire. Which dessert, which often has a graham cracker crust, can be put on a stick and roasted on a fire?

From Quiz A Cold Day in Hell

Answer: Cheesecake

Cheesecake comes in many varieties, but for this hot and cold dessert, plain New York style works the best. First, freeze cubes of cheesecake (you can cut your own cubes, but pre-cubed can be purchased and is infinitely easier). Make sure you freeze them well, so they won't fall apart. Put them on sticks, just as you would do with a marshmallow to makes s'mores. You can even place the sticks before freezing to make it easier. The final step is roasting; do not keep the cheesecake over the flame for too long, or you will lose your dessert to the fire. If done correctly, you will have a square of hot and gooey and smoky cheesecake with a cool, creamy center. Delicious!

99. Where would you most likely eat blubber?

From Quiz Where Is It Eaten?

Answer: Alaska

Blubber is raw fat from sea animals. Many people go whaling to get blubber.

100. In Syria, there is a drink called "limonana". What exactly is it?

From Quiz The Cooling Power of Mint!

Answer: Mint lemonade

Limonana is a drink made from freshly squeezed lemons and mint leaves. It was created in the early 1990s as a result of a fake advertising soft drink used in Israel.

101. Which soft drink, invented by Charles Alderton, is named for a drugstore owner?

From Quiz Well Done!

Answer: Dr. Pepper

Invented in 1885 by pharmacist Charles Alderton, Dr. Pepper is said to be named after Charles T. Pepper. Alderton was working at a drug store owned by Wade Morrison, and Mr Pepper was the owner of the first drugstore in which Mr Morrison ever worked.

102. What is a Queen Mary Tart?

From Quiz Eat Drink and be Mary

Answer: Cookie dough crust filled with custard and raisins

This is a recipe from Mary of Guise, wife of Britain's King James V and mother of Mary Queen of Scots. Mary was originally from Lorraine, which likely explains the similarity of this dish to a sweet quiche. It is made with a base crust of raw puff pastry, spread with base layer of apricot jam, and filled with a custard of eggs, milk and melted butter to which raisins and mixed candied fruit have been added. Then the whole thing is baked. Check out the website scot.veg.com for more details.

103. This drink is traditionally made with milk and/or cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and eggs. Additionally liquors such as rum, brandy, whiskey and other may be added. Nutmeg and/or cinnamon may be sprinkled on top to add taste and a festive appeal.

From Quiz Now You're Cooking Without Heat

Answer: Eggnog

There was actually an Eggnog Riot at the West Point. Whiskey was smuggled onto the campus by cadets to make eggnog on Christmas Day in 1826. A riot ensued involving better than 1/3 of the cadets. This led to 20 cadets and one enlisted soldier being court-martialed. Jefferson Davis, The future Confederate States of America was involved in the riot but was not court-martialed.

104. According to the advertising jingle, what Australian spread 'puts a rose in every cheek'?

From Quiz My Favourite Things - Food Glorious Food!

Answer: Vegemite

This is the jingle: We're happy little Vegemites as bright as bright can be, We all enjoy our Vegemite for breakfast, lunch and tea, Our Mummy says we're growing stronger every single week, Because we love our Vegemite, We all adore our Vegemite, It puts a rose in every cheek! It may also be found on YouTube, if you'd like to see it sung.

105. The waitress asked me if I wanted a certain "sauce" on my breakfast meat. I readily accepted. This sauce is a watery liquid made, in part, with coffee. What is it called?

From Quiz Y'all have a bite...a Southern day of food

Answer: Red-eye gravy

This is simply a mixture of the drippings in the skillet in which the ham was fried mixed with black coffee. It's good on the ham, and also good to dunk your biscuits in. YES, you're having biscuits, not toast! If you mix flour with the liquid, as if making a gravy, it's called sawmill gravy.

106. In a restaurant in Texas I decided I'd try their "special" appetizer called Texas Caviar. What is the basis of that special caviar?

From Quiz Y'all have a bite...a Southern lunch

Answer: black-eyed peas

Add some diced tomato, onion, green pepper, minced jalapeno, some vinegar and olive oil, along with some spices and voila! Texas Caviar. Hint: You don't have to start with the dried legume; canned works perfectly well.

107. How do you spell this Russian or Ukrainian beet soup?

From Quiz Culinary Spelling Bee

Answer: Borscht

There are two main types of Borscht, generally referred to as hot and cold. Borscht is a hearty soup chiefly made with beet broth, beets and potatoes. Due to the heartiness of this dish, it can be consumed as a meal in itself.

108. As I sipped my cocktail, the waiter announced that one of the appetizers was "Devils on Horseback", which are actually what unusual, though not evil, foodstuff?

From Quiz The Macabre Menu of Monstrous Manor

Answer: Stuffed prunes

"Devils on Horseback" are appetizers typically made with pitted prunes, but dates or liver (which is truly diabolical) have been known to substitute. The procedure entails the items being stuffed with tidbits (e.g., nuts, cheese), wrapped with bacon slices, then baked, and may be served with toast and watercress. In contrast, at Chez No, bacon has a shelf life of 10 seconds, prunes 100 years, liver 100 million years, and watercress has been declared an extinct species, so these denizens of the dining table are unlikely to appear in the immediate vicinity spreading their festive cheer.

109. What was the first fruit eaten on the moon ?

From Quiz Drink 'em Down and Eat 'em Up!

Answer: peach

Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had two meals while their Apollo 11 lander was parked on the moon in July, 1969. Besides a peach they ate bacon squares, sugar cookie cubes, coffee and pineapple-grapefruit drinks.

110. In culinary terms what is one half of the body of an animal called?

111. Which dish is the odd one out?

It's a rice dish. All the others are egg dishes.

112. Champignons are what type of food?

From Quiz Food And Drink 44

113. Sharab, from the Arabic term, was a form of dessert introduced into Europe. What is it commonly known as?

From Quiz General Culinary 9

Answer: Sherbet

Sherbet comes originally from the Arabic 'arba', meaning 'to drink'. It has the same root word as 'syrup'.

114. Which sauce is traditionally served with pork?

From Quiz Mixed Menu of Food Questions

Answer: Apple

At one time a pig's head would be served with an apple in its mouth

115. The 'Baby Food Diet' asks its followers to eat up to 14 jars of baby food in a day as a meal substitute. A jar of baby food will roughly supply how many calories?

From Quiz Diets - For Better or Worse

Answer: No more than 100 calories

Fourteen jars of baby food followed by a small adult evening meal is the daily recommendation of this particular diet. The baby food jars are portion controlled, and small portions at that. They can be quite bland as they are generally under-seasoned for an immature palate. They are also designed for the energy and nutritional needs of well.. babies! Consequently they can be low in protein and fat for adults. The possibility of choosing all the baby 'desserts' rather than the 'dinner' varieties will also impact nutritional benefits.

116. This Thai hot sauce was regularly paired by me and my friends during university with potato waffles, but it is perhaps more traditionally eaten with seafood, omelettes, noodles or spring rolls. What is its correct spelling?

From Quiz Foods That Fill Me With Joy

Answer: Sriracha

Sriracha consists of chilis, garlic, salt, sugar and vinegar. I've found it to pair well with waffles, chips, burgers and all sorts. In the world of hot sauces, it is not that hot, but to my taste buds it is plenty hot enough. Though sriracha contains a lot of sodium, and is not the healthiest of foods, chili peppers (and all the spicy foods and sauces that contain them) are thought to help boost your immune system, and have lots of other benefits.

117. Which Japanese pickle consists of shredded red ginger preserved in plum vinegar?

From Quiz In a Bit of a Pickle

Answer: Beni Shoga

Beni Shoga is pickled Japanese ginger. In Japanese "Beni" means red and "Shoga" is ginger. Beni Shoga is a type of "Tsukemono" which is the Japanese word for pickle. It is made by cutting the ginger into thin strips and pickling it in plum vinegar known as umezu which is a by-product of making pickled plums. This produces a bright red spicy pickle with is used as a garnish on a variety of dishes.

118. "Angels on horseback" has been a popular British dish since the 19th century. Culinarily speaking, what are "devils on horseback"?

From Quiz What the Devil Had for His Dinner

Answer: stuffed prunes wrapped in bacon

Angels on horseback is a colloquial name for grilled oysters wrapped in bacon. The correlative devils on horseback is a similar dish, replacing the oysters with prunes, sometimes stuffed with cheese and/or minced nuts. Variations include substituting prosciutto or pancetta for the bacon. If dates are substituted for prunes, they may first be soaked in brandy. There is much disagreement about the source of the name "devils on horseback." Much of it is amateur, fanciful or both. A mention in "The Country Gentleman" magazine in 1885 says it is because they are served quite hot and hell is reputed to afford a hot climate. The reason for the British association between devils on horseback and Christmas dinner is similarly unclear.

119. Well, try as I might, I just haven't developed a taste for sauerkraut. I do love pickles though! So, are mass-market pickles a great alternative to get a probiotic-rich food?

From Quiz Don't Eat Me. I'm Rotten.

Answer: No, commercial pickles use heat and vinegar to preserve instead of fermentation.

Commercial pickles are made by using heat and vinegar. The heat first to kill any bacteria and then the vinegar to create an environment that the bacteria cannot thrive in and thereby preserving them. Traditionally, however, pickles were indeed made by fermentation, in a similar method to sauerkraut or kimchi. This process would use brine instead of vinegar, which suppresses the harmful bacteria and allows the probiotic bacteria to thrive resulting in a salty and slightly acidic preservation solution.
