Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first book, "The Hunger Games", ended with Katniss and Peeta pretending to be in love. But they didn't fool President Snow. What animal does Snow remind Katniss of?

Answer: Snake

President Snow has apparently been "elected" for life. In the second book of the series, "Catching Fire", when Katniss and Peeta watch the highlights of previous Hunger Games, there is President Snow in each of them. His eyes, especially, are snake-like.
2. Katniss has a gifted stylist in Cinna, who prepared her wardrobe in the Hunger Games as well as for the appearances and festivities surrounding the games. What is the theme that Cinna continues to use for Katniss in the second book of the series, "Catching Fire"?

Answer: Fire

Thanks to Cinna's costuming, Katniss became known as "The Girl on Fire", and the black outfit for the second book echoed this reference.
3. In the second book of the Hunger Games series, "Catching Fire", we learn more about Haymitch, the drunken loner. Why was the alcohol-addled Haymitch selected to mentor Katniss and Peeta in the games?

Answer: He was a previous victor in the games

Haymitch was the only previous victor of the games from District 12. In fact, he was the victor of the 50th Hunger Games, the last previous Quarter Quell games. "Catching Fire", the second book of the series, is about the 75th Hunger Games, also a Quarter Quell.
4. In the Hunger Games series, President Snow has a symbol. What is it?

Answer: White rose

President Snow always wears a white rose in his lapel. Also, when he wants Katniss to know he has been in her space, he leaves a rose. In "Catching Fire", the second book of the Hunger Games series, the very scent of roses is enough to make Katniss sick.
5. In the second book of the Hunger Games series, "Catching Fire", Katniss makes an unexpected alliance with Finnick, who is from District 4. What is Finnick's weapon of choice, reflecting his district?

Answer: Trident

District 4 is on the ocean, and, not surprisingly, Finnick is an excellent swimmer. Like his fellow tribute Maggs from District 4, he can weave nets from practically anything, and is a master with a 3-pronged trident. Finnick is first seen in the second book of the Hunger Games series, "Catching Fire."
6. The Hunger Games in the second book of the series, "Catching Fire", are the 75th annual games, and therefore a Quarter Quell. What unusual stipulations are put on the selection of the tributes for these games?

Answer: They must be previous victors of the games

In "Catching Fire", the tributes for the 75th Quarter Quell games must be prior victors. The Catch-22 for District 12 is that there are only 3 possible choices: Katniss is the only female victor from District 12, so she is definitely in. The male victors are Haymitch and Peeta. So, one will be a tribute, and the other will be the mentor of the two tributes, only one of whom can survive.
7. In the preparation phase prior to the games, in the second book of the Hunger Games series, "Catching Fire", Katniss overhears two other tributes talking about the force field and realizes its weak point. How can she detect its weakness?

Answer: If you look carefully, you can see a small, vibrating square

Tributes Beetee and Wiress point out the "chink" in the force field, during the training session. Katniss thinks the Gamemakers set the force field up to prevent her from shooting at them again, as she did in the first book of the series, "The Hunger Games". This ability to see the "chink" proves to be vital information in "Catching Fire", as the games move to their conclusion.
8. In the second book of the Hunger Games series, "Catching Fire", during Katniss' individual presentation to the Gamemakers, what shocking thing does she do?

Answer: She hangs the first Head Gamemaker in effigy

In the first book of the series, "The Hunger Games", when the Head Gamemaker changed the rules and said two tributes could survive, Katniss and Peeta worked as a team. At the last minute, the Head Gamemaker changed the rules back and said there could be only one victor. When Katniss then showed the world that she and Peeta would each swallow poison berries rather than live without the other, the Head Gamemaker quickly changed the rules back yet again, so that both could be victors. That Head Gamemaker was then killed, something no one was supposed to know.

In "Catching Fire", the second book of the series, when Katniss hangs the first Head Gamemaker in effigy and smears poison berries on the dummy's face, she shows President Snow that she knows he has been killed, a clear act of defiance.
9. In the first book, "The Hunger Games", the tributes had to deal with muttations that took the form of tracker jack wasps and vicious dogs. What muttations do they encounter in the second book of the series, "Catching Fire"?

Answer: Vicious monkeys

At first, there are only two monkeys. Then, after Katniss, Peeta and Finnick finish their task and look up, the number has grown to "scores". Peeta only glances up at them, but this provokes them to attack with complete ferociousness.
10. If you have not yet read "Catching Fire", the second book in the Hunger Games series, you might want to skip this question. Which of the following do NOT make it out to safety at the end of the Games in the second book?

Answer: Peeta

In "Catching Fire", the second book in the Hunger Games series, Katniss shoots an arrow into the "chink" in the force field and causes the thing to collapse. Hovercrafts then zoom in and extract the remaining tributes and other rebels observing the games from the other side of the force field.

Unfortunately, Peeta does not make it. You will have to read the third book in the series, "The Mockingjay", to find out what has happened to him and whether he and Katniss are ever reunited.
