In "Catching Fire", the tributes for the 75th Quarter Quell games must be prior victors. The Catch-22 for District 12 is that there are only 3 possible choices: Katniss is the only female victor from District 12, so she is definitely in. The male victors are Haymitch and Peeta. So, one will be a tribute, and the other will be the mentor of the two tributes, only one of whom can survive.

Tributes Beetee and Wiress point out the "chink" in the force field, during the training session. Katniss thinks the Gamemakers set the force field up to prevent her from shooting at them again, as she did in the first book of the series, "The Hunger Games". This ability to see the "chink" proves to be vital information in "Catching Fire", as the games move to their conclusion.

Answer: She hangs the first Head Gamemaker in effigy

In the first book of the series, "The Hunger Games", when the Head Gamemaker changed the rules and said two tributes could survive, Katniss and Peeta worked as a team. At the last minute, the Head Gamemaker changed the rules back and said there could be only one victor. When Katniss then showed the world that she and Peeta would each swallow poison berries rather than live without the other, the Head Gamemaker quickly changed the rules back yet again, so that both could be victors. That Head Gamemaker was then killed, something no one was supposed to know.

In "Catching Fire", the second book of the series, when Katniss hangs the first Head Gamemaker in effigy and smears poison berries on the dummy's face, she shows President Snow that she knows he has been killed, a clear act of defiance.

At first, there are only two monkeys. Then, after Katniss, Peeta and Finnick finish their task and look up, the number has grown to "scores". Peeta only glances up at them, but this provokes them to attack with complete ferociousness.

In "Catching Fire", the second book in the Hunger Games series, Katniss shoots an arrow into the "chink" in the force field and causes the thing to collapse. Hovercrafts then zoom in and extract the remaining tributes and other rebels observing the games from the other side of the force field.

Unfortunately, Peeta does not make it. You will have to read the third book in the series, "The Mockingjay", to find out what has happened to him and whether he and Katniss are ever reunited.
