Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Hunger Games does the clock arena appear?

Answer: 75th

The clock-area first appears in the second book, 'Catching Fire'. This is in the 75th Hunger Games. Each segment of the 'clock' has a different horror inside it, each hour. The 'Hunger Games' trilogy is told by the female protagonist, Katniss Everdeen. Throughout the trilogy she battles with two different arenas, each filled with 23 other tributes and new horrors to battle.
2. Who was selected first to be Katniss's male district partner in this arena?

Answer: Haymitch

Haymitch is selected first to be Katniss's district partner but Peeta steps up immediately to take his place and protect Katniss. Katniss expected this since she heard the quarter quell announcement, and she knows that Peeta is planning to risk his own life if it means protecting her.
3. What was the attack from 12:00-1:00?

Answer: Lightning

Katniss, as the protagonist, thinks that the other players in the arena are going to use the lightning power to kill the careers. But she later finds out that it was actually to escape the arena and the capitol. Her (and Peeta's) mentor for the Hunger Games, Haymitch Abernathy, had actually planned for this and told a select few about the plan previous to the start of the games, and purposefully excluded her and Peeta from it.
4. What was the attack from 1:00-2:00?

Answer: Blood rain

Katniss never experiences the Blood Rain herself and, as she is the narrator of the story, we never know first-hand what it feels like during the raining of blood, apart from the way Johanna describes it as 'thick, hot blood'. But Katniss sees the aftermath of it on Johannah, Beetee and Wiress.

They get covered head to toe in the solid brick-red blood. Katniss describes them as looking like 'they've been dipped in paint and left out to dry'.
5. What was the attack from 2:00-3:00?

Answer: Poisonous Fog

The arena's poisonous fog starts to attack Katniss as she tries to rouse Peeta, Finnick and Mags; in these few seconds, she describes the fog as sickeningly sweet and blistering. It then seems to follow them as they run out towards the beach. This fog makes the allies' muscles sag and appear to have died.

It kills Mags as she plants a kiss on Finnick as a goodbye then runs straight into it to protect Peeta, Katniss and Finnick.
6. What was the attack from 3:00-4:00?

Answer: Vicious monkeys

The monkeys that Katniss saw as she and her allies ran away from the poisonous fog seemed friendly and welcoming, but these monkeys had assembled in scores and weighed down the limbs of the branching on the edge of the jungle. These vicious monkeys killed the morphling girl from District 6 because she jumped straight in front of Peeta to protect him, per Haymitch's request for the selected tributes/previous victors to give their lives for Peeta's.
7. What was the attack from 4:00-5:00?

Answer: Jabberjays

The jabberjays taunt Katniss and Finnick by mimicking the scream of the people they love. e.g. Prim, Gale, Annie. Finnick points out that the birds just mimmic the voices of the people, and since the birds are screaming with Prim's and Gale's and Annie's voices they must have got them screams from somewhere; he suggested that the jabberjays must have tortured their family and friends to get them.

This worried Katniss tremendously, until Peeta talked the truth into them.
8. What was the attack from 6:00-7:00?

Answer: Beast

The players of the game don't know exactly what 'the beast' is, and they decide not to find out, since it killed either the District 5 female or the District 10 male. When Peeta makes his map of the arena he simply marks the 6:00-7:00 segment with 'the beast', advising them to stay away from that part of the jungle during that time.
9. What was the attack from 10:00-11:00?

Answer: Giant Wave

The giant wave washes away everything in the 10:00-11:00 segment, drowning anyone that's there. It killed either the District 5 female or the District 10 male. Katniss, Peeta and their allies decide to stay away from that part of the jungle at that time, not wanting to be killed by the giant wave, and move on around the 'clock' as far away from these horrors as they can get.
10. What was the attack from 11:00-12:00?

Answer: Insects

The insects are known to make loud clicking noises. Katniss and Johanna hear them when they are rolling the coil down to the water. Finnick suggests that they may have pincers, from the sound they make, and Katniss thinks that they sound like 'they could strip us all to the bone in a second'.
