Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Early in the book, who came to District 12 to give Katniss a warning?

Answer: President Snow

President Snow accused Katniss of creating the atmosphere for a potential uprising against the Capitol. He let her know that if she couldn't convince the public and himself that she was in love with Peeta, Gale's life was in jeopardy. He knew about the brief kiss she and Gale had shared after the Games.

She narrated that he looked like a viper, and smelled of roses and blood. When he was leaving, she realized it was his breath that smelled like blood. Creepy. During their conversation, Katniss realized that her defiance had led to the execution of Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane.
2. Was it Haymitch who delivered the discouraging news to Katniss that, in order to protect her loved ones, she would have pretend to love Peeta for the rest of her life?

Answer: Yes

After the disturbing visit from President Snow, Katniss was reeling under the pressure. She felt she had to confide the threat to someone, but she knew she had to protect those closest to her. Her first possibility was Cinna, but she did not want to endanger him either. So, she chose Haymitch. On the train later that evening, she and Haymitch had a quick chat about the state of her life.

He made it clear to her that her "love affair" with Peeta would have to continue forever, as the pair would always be owned by the Capitol.
3. Who took over as District 12 Head Peacekeeper after Cray disappeared?

Answer: Romulus Thread

Katniss arrived back in town, from the woods, to find the new Head Peacekeeper whipping her best friend Gale. Gale had been caught at Cray's house with a wild turkey kill, but Cray had mysteriously disappeared. Gale was strung up and whipped. Peacekeeper Darius tried to stop the punishment after twenty lashes, but Thread knocked him out.

It was explained to Kat that Gale had passed out after thirty lashes, but Thread had completed forty in total before Katniss threw herself in between Gale and Thread. Thread hit her across the face with the whip when she intervened. Gale was taken to Katniss' mom for treatment. We later learned that poor Darius had been turned into an Avox.
4. From what district had Bonnie and Twill come to District 12?

Answer: 8

District 8 was the location of the first uprising since District 13's 75 years earlier. Katniss had already seen footage of the uprising on TV in the mayor's house. Twill was a teacher and Bonnie her student at the time of their uprising. They both lost their entire families in the battle.

They met up with Katniss in the woods near her special lake, and offered her a cracker of sorts with her mockingjay symbol baked inside. They explained to her that they were headed to District 13, where they believed a new civilization had begun to thrive. Katniss had doubts about this, but gave her new 'friends' all of the food she had on her, and followed their advice to watch footage of District 13.

She did so, and saw that it was indeed stock footage, replayed as new, to make people believe that District 13 was still a toxic waste zone.
5. Were Katniss and Peeta allowed to say their goodbyes before leaving for the 75th Hunger Games?

Answer: No

The 75th Hunger Games was also the third Quarter Quell. Each Quarter Quell had special conditions to make them stand out from the other Hunger Games. This year, President Snow announced that the tributes would be drawn from a pool solely containing past Hunger Games champions. That meant Peeta, Katniss and Haymitch were all in the reaping. Haymitch was chosen, but Peeta volunteered to take his place. Haymitch and Katniss expected this, and had already agreed they'd both do everything possible to make sure Peeta was the one who survived. Since she was sure she'd be dying in the arena this time, Katniss had her goodbyes ready for her family, Gale and Madge.

Unfortunately, the contestants were rushed away immediately after the reaping and no one had the chance to say goodbye.
6. How old was Finnick Odair when he won the 65th Hunger Games?

Answer: 14

Katniss met Finnick for the first time when the tributes were waiting to do their coming out segment. She described him as a very attractive Career from District 4, and that he was "somewhat of a living legend in Panem". Katniss admitted he was visually stunning, but had never felt an attraction to him personally.

She was not sure if it was that he was "too" pretty, too easy to attain, or too easy to lose. I'm sure most readers know that you have to be at least twelve to be a tribute in the Games, so that "ten" was not an actual possibility.
7. Which tribute strung up a dummy with the name 'Seneca Crane' finger painted on it?

Answer: Katniss

After the training sessions, Peeta and Katniss were at a loss as to what to show the Gamekeepers in the final demonstration. Peeta painted Rue the way she looked at her death, after Katniss had placed flowers on her body. Katniss made a noose, and then hung a dummy with Seneca's name on it. Both acts of defiance garnered the pair from District 12 with an unprecedented score of twelve.

This was done, Haymitch assumed, to make them immediate targets for elimination. Tax was not one of the contestants, but was the archery trainer.
8. Just after being infected by the deadly arena fog, what did Katniss discover would help heal herself and her allies?

Answer: Saltwater

Though it burned her wounds, Katniss realized it would also help the pain after a few moments. The pain eased as the deadly fog was leeched from her body. She reported this to Peeta. After they'd recovered somewhat, they were then able to team up and help Finnick recover. Finnick suffered the most damage, and that may have been due to the fact he'd put out the most exertion while escaping.

When Katniss found herself unable to carry Mags, Mags sacrificed herself to the fog. Katniss learned later that saving her and Peeta had been Finnick and Mag's plan all along.
9. Who said this to Katniss just before she entered the arena? "Remember, girl on fire, I'm still betting on you."

Answer: Cinna

Cinna was saying his goodbye to Katniss. He'd created an amazing outfit for her interview, and that act of defiance was most likely fatal. President Snow had given Cinna no option other than to have Kat wear the wedding dress her public had voted for, so Cinna added a twist.

When Kat lifted her arms and twirled, that dressed burned away and underneath was an identical dress made of black feathers. He'd transformed her into a mockingjay, the new symbol of the rebellion against the Capitol. After saying the quote above, Cinna was beaten and taken away as Kat watched on.

She was then sent up and into the arena.
10. Were the allies of District 13 able to rescue Peeta, as well as Katniss, after she blew up the arena force field?

Answer: No

Unfortunately, neither Peeta nor Johanna Mason could be rescued from the arena. Beetee and Finnick were saved alongside Katniss, who was badly wounded. Johanna saved Katniss from both the Careers and the Capitol by cutting out her tracking device and making her stay down and appear dead. Katniss was hysterical when she realized that Haymitch had set all of this into motion, but had not been able to save Peeta.

She could only imagine him off somewhere being tortured for information he did not even have. One light in the desperate aftermath of the Quarter Quell was that Gale came to let Katniss know her family had been saved before District 12 had been annihilated.
