Better Call Saul - Season 6 Trivia Questions

1. What is significant about the slide-rule we see manufactured at the start?

From Quiz
"Better Call Saul" S6:E5 "Black and Blue"

Answer: It was ordered by one of Werner's men

It is manufactured in Germany. At first, we wonder why its creation is relevant. We later learn one of the late Werner Zielger's workers (Casper the Croatian) ordered it for Werner's widow (instead of attending the funeral; none of the guys did). Poor Casper didn't realise the gift would lead to his own death...

2. What happened to Jeff the taxi driver who harassed "Gene" at the beginning of Season 5 (i.e. did Saul/Jimmy/Gene "fix it" himself)?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - What Happened To Everyone?

Answer: "Gene" joined forces with Jeff to pull scams

"Gene" tricked Jeff's mother Marion (played by the famous Carol Burnett) into letting him into their home. He then "befriended" Jeff and Buddy (the other guy at the mall that day in Season 5 Episode 1). He arranged for Jeff to sneak into the mall one night, avoid security, and steal lots of expensive clothes (and lingerie - but we're not here to judge). When the three comedians...er, I mean accomplices were gloating over the merchandise in Jeff's mother's garage, Gene threatened them. He told them how much jail time they'd get if they informed on him and/or bothered him again. They had to grudgingly swear "We're done." But, soon after, Gene contacted them again. He found he had missed "the game" too much. They worked on a new scam together. Photographing ID cards, credit cards, etc, and selling to an unnamed "gentleman". Jimmy McGill was still clearly addicted to crime after all this time. To be honest, I would have expected the black and white Omaha scenes to change to colour at this point. B & W was meant to represent Saul's misery hiding from the police, not able to enjoy crime anymore, living in hell, a boring job, etc. So logically, a return to his element would warrant a return to colour. Wouldn't it?

3. Early in the episode Ignacio 'Nacho' Varga is shown abandoning a truck. Where does Nacho hide after he ditches the truck?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E3 "Rock and Hard Place"

Answer: Oil tanker

After Nacho steals a truck to escape from the Salamanca twins he has to abandon it because a front tire and engine have been shot. He runs into a field and climbs into an oil tanker. When he sees the Salamanca twins searching the area, Nacho holds his breath and lays submerged in oil until after the Salamanca twins have left.

4. What toy is Nacho's girlfriend Jo playing with when Mike and some of his men enter to access Ignacaio 'Nacho' Varga's safe?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E2 "Carrot and Stick"

Answer: Dominoes

The episode opens with Jo building a line of dominoes on the floor after which she tips one over and watches them all fall down. She then wonders to Amber what the world record for dominoes must be. Interestingly, in 2017, Lily Hevesh set a record by building a 15,524 domino line. Not surprisingly, Mike tells Jo and Amber that they have to leave town while they go through Nacho's belongings.

5. The episode "Wine and Roses" begins with a flashforward. At whose mansion are the police seizing personal property including ties, a Cadillac and artwork?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E1 "Wine and Roses"

Answer: Saul Goodman

As is typical with many of Vince Gilligan's work, the camera shots in the season six intro are up close and have long focus times. Dozens of people are at Saul Goodman's home seizing property like ties, clothing, trinkets, files and even a life-sized poster of him. Interestingly, Kim's Zafiro Anejo tequila bottle stopper gets left behind. This same bottle stopper also appears in the show "Breaking Bad" of which "Better Call Saul" is a prequel.

6. Who confronts Howard about his "cocaine problem"?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E5 "Black and Blue"

Answer: Cliff

The Sandpiper class-action lawsuit has been dragging on for two years. Howard from HHM and Erin and Cliff from Davis & Main convene a meeting of plaintiffs. Most of the elderly clients (and their offspring) want this settled - NOW. At the last minute, Howard convinces them all to leave it to him and the other lawyers (which means more money for them!). A great relief. Until everyone leaves and Cliff asks to speak to Howard privately... Cliff confronts Howard in the parking lot. He knows all about Howard's cocaine problem! What?!?!? The bewildered Howard insists this is all untrue. But Cliff's son was also an addict and Cliff is used to such denials! Then he reveals he was meeting with Kim Wexler when he saw Howard's car and that poor call-girl pushed out onto the middle of the road. Cliff was with KIM? Now things make sense. Howard thanks Cliff for being honest, and quickly leaves. The furious Howard has figured out Saul and Kim are behind everything. But what if they INTENDED him to figure it out?

7. What happened to Lalo Salamanca?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - What Happened To Everyone?

Answer: Killed during a showdown

Eduardo "Lalo" Salamanca is arguably the deadliest of all Salamanca gangsters. Unlike the other psychotic cartel members, he has charm and intelligence. He can fool people, until it's too late. He and Gus had a showdown in the unfinished Superlab. Lalo had forced Gus - at gunpoint - to take him down into the laundry's secret underground chamber. Lalo had always been one step ahead of "The Chicken Man" and was about to kill him. But Gus had EXPECTED Lalo to be one step ahead. He quickly kicked an extension cord out of its socket...the whole place turned black...and Gus ran to retrieve a hidden pistol. BANG! BANG! BANG! Despite firing in the dark, Gus hit his adversary in the throat. Lying on his back in a bloody mess, Lalo realised Gus had set him up. By force of habit, he laughed. Then never laughed again... He was buried under the lab. Years later, when certain chemists worked in the finished Superlab, they literally walked over his grave.

8. Ignacio 'Nacho' Varga eventually makes his way to a car repair business. Who does he call first when he uses the owner's phone?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E3 "Rock and Hard Place"

Answer: His father

Fearing that he may have already been taken by the cartel, Nacho calls his father. He tells him that he just wanted to hear his voice but his father is frustrated with him and tells Nacho that he just needs to go to the police. Crying, Nacho tells his father goodbye seemingly knowing it'll be the last time he does so. After Nacho calls his father he calls Mike and speaks to him and Gus Fring. They seemingly discuss how Nacho is going to get back into the USA and what to do next.

9. When Mike and his men break into Ignacio 'Nacho' Varga's safe, they find two fake ID cards. From what North American area were these fake IDs issued?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E2 "Carrot and Stick"

Answer: Manitoba, Canada

The fake Manitoba IDs in Nacho's safe were in the names of Martin Cavallo and Felipe Cavallo for Nacho and his father. After Mike and his men access Nacho's safe, they replace the safe with a replica and add a letter while returning Nacho's other items like cash and the IDs. Later in the episode, Juan Bolsa's men access the safe that Mike's men had planted the letter in after they break into Nacho's apartment.

10. What does Jimmy provide to Kim for her client to borrow for his day in court?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E1 "Wine and Roses"

Answer: Sportscoat

Kim is talking to her first pro bono client that day and she asks him if he has something nice to wear. Jimmy overhears Kim's conversation and holds up a jacket offering for her to let her client borrow it. Kim tells him the first offering is too nice and then accepts the second jacket Jimmy shows her to have her client borrow for court.

11. Why are the court staff so hostile toward Jimmy/Saul?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E4 "Hit and Run"

Answer: He let Lalo escape custody

Saul cannot understand. He goes to the Court House, like he's done hundreds of times. But today, guards insist on searching him more thoroughly, clerks hardly speak to him, and no one will sit with him at lunchtime. Saul asks Bill Oakley why. Oakley reveals it's now common knowledge Saul "scammed the court" to set a "murdering cartel psychopath" free. Saul makes matters worse by shouting "Prove it - Bill!", instead of denying it. From this moment on, nobody will remember this man as Jimmy McGill "the big-mouth lawyer with a bigger heart". Only Saul Goodman, the criminal Criminal Lawyer. Sad.

12. What does Ignacio 'Nacho' Varga make both Gus Fring and Mike promise in order for him to agree to their plan?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E3 "Rock and Hard Place"

Answer: His father will not be harmed.

Nacho tells Gus that he knows that he is a liability to Gus and that his best option is to have him dead because if Nacho gets caught by the Salamancas he will be tortured and have to inform them that he is a mole for Gus. Nacho states that he will go along with whatever story and plan they concoct as long as his father is not harmed. Not trusting Gus solely, Nacho makes Mike agree that if he goes along with the plan that his father will not be harmed.

13. When Jimmy first visits the trailer of the Kettlemans he tells them that he can provide them something. What is the term he uses that will help them get their life back on track?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E2 "Carrot and Stick"

Answer: Exoneration

Not surprisingly considering how Jimmy and the Kettlemans ended their working relationship in season one, Betsy Kettleman at first wants nothing to do with Jimmy. However, Jimmy promises the Kettlemans that if they do a favor for him they will get exoneration and their lives will be back on track soon.

14. Knowing there will be retribution, what do Juan Bolsa and Gus Fring refer to as the Salamanca way when faced with the bloody killing of a family member?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E1 "Wine and Roses"

Answer: Sangre por sangre

Juan Bolsa calls Gus Fring and informs him that Lalo's home was broken into and everyone there was killed. Gus Fring comments that the Salamancas believe in 'sangre por sangre' (blood for blood) and that the cartels are on the verge of war and chaos. Juan Bolsa assumes that either the Colombians or Nacho are behind the attack on Lalo's home.

15. Who does Jimmy fight in this episode?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E5 "Black and Blue"

Answer: Howard

Late one night, Jimmy is summoned to meet a new client - in a boxing ring of all places. The man's name is Mr. H. Ward. Yes, you guessed it, Mr. Ward is none other than Ho - WARD! Howard tells Saul "You, me, us. I'm tired of this." (He is referring to all the pranks Saul has arranged: bowling balls on his car, tricking people to believe he takes cocaine, etc.) Howard suggests they "punch it out" to resolve their differences. Howard wins. As Saul lies there, immobile, Howard snaps "You've mistaken my kindness for weakness!" and leaves.

16. What became of Nacho?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - What Happened To Everyone?

Answer: He shot himself in the head

Nacho shot himself in the head to avoid Cartel revenge - with Gus' assurance his father would be OK - in front of Bolsa, Hector and co. Gus set the whole thing up. Originally Gus' plan to assassinate Lalo needed The Cartel to think Nacho was behind it all. But Nacho fled and eventually made it back to the USA. But he told Gus and Mike he wouldn't lie about arranging the bloodbath - unless his father was left alone. His father had been telling him for years to stay away from crooks - now Nacho wished he'd listened. Mike swore he would personally see to Manuel Varga's safety. Mike always kept his word, so that was good enough for Nacho. Mike and Nacho looked at one another sadly before Gus' goons dragged Nacho away. They had formed a kind of mutual respect over the years...

17. What does Jimmy tell the Kettlemans about Howard Hamlin that caused him to misrepresent them as their attorney?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E2 "Carrot and Stick"

Answer: He was impaired by a white powder.

Jimmy's plan to exonerate the Kettlemans involves bringing down Howard Hamlin's professional reputation as a lawyer. He tells the Kettlemans that when Howard was representing them he was impaired by a white powder, the "Devil's dandruff", and he did not do his job adequately. With this information, Jimmy knows that the Kettlemans will seek the legal counsel of Cliff Main who had seen a suspicious bag of white powder fall out of Howard's locker in the prior episode.

18. What name did Lalo use while in the United States and was brought to court under when he was arrested for the murder of Fred Whalen?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E1 "Wine and Roses"

Answer: Jorge de Guzman

At the courthouse Jimmy finds the lead prosecutor, Gina Khalil, in the case against his client Jorge de Guzman. She accuses Jimmy of assisting his client in skipping bail but Jimmy tells her it's not his fault that with all of their resources they couldn't keep track of Lalo. This is a huge blunder by Jimmy as Gina does not know that Jorge de Guzman is an alias being used by the drug lord Lalo.

19. Which character from season 3 returns after a year to work for Saul Goodman?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E5 "Black and Blue"

Answer: Francesca Liddy

Francesca worked for Jimmy and Kim in 2002 as a receptionist. The future husband and wife began sharing an office with separate legal practices. "Wexler and McGill". But in 2003, Jimmy lost his license and Kim was nearly killed in a car accident. Since the latter's arm would be in a cast for months, they realised they had to give up their office. They apologized profoundly to Francesca and promised they would re-hire her someday. Over a year later, Jimmy does. He contacts her at the DMV and asks her to be his new receptionist. Seeing that "Saul" now runs a practice specifically for guilty people, scumbags, psychos, etc, Francesca refuses - until Saul/Jimmy offers to pay her substantially more than before. Francesca finally accepts. No doubt she regrets that years later when she is questioned by the authorities after the deaths of poor Hank Schrader and Steve Gomez...

20. What character from "Breaking Bad" Season 2 appears in this episode?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E4 "Hit and Run"

Answer: Spooge

Jimmy/Saul returns to his Nail-Saloon office one afternoon to a surprising scene. His landlady is even more annoyed with him than usual. About a dozen dodgy-looking people have turned up and won't go away. But Saul is pleased - new paying clients! They all heard about how he set Lalo free, and now want to hire him. The nearest one "Spooge" introduces himself. He becomes a regular client of Saul's... ...until four years later, when Spooge's wife crushes his head under a stolen ATM machine.

21. Who told Nacho's father what had become of his son?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" - What Happened To Everyone?

Answer: Mike

Mike went to Manuel Varga's shop late one night and told him the bad news. He didn't mention Gus or Mexico or Lalo. He only promised there would be justice - "The Salamancas' day is coming". Implying the Salamancas had actually killed Nacho. (Which, in a manner of speaking, was true. Hector was forcing the Vargas to let him use their trucks...which began Nacho's series of mistakes.) Senor Varga was devastated, but coldly pointed out: "Not 'justice', what you talk of is revenge", "It never ends", and "You gangsters and your 'justice'. You're all the same", and walked away. The grieving man's words hit Mike hard...

22. In order to gain access to Howard Hamlin's car, Jimmy develops a plan to make a copy of the key. Who does Huell momentarily take the key from so that a copy can be made?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E3 "Rock and Hard Place"

Answer: Valet car driver

In the scheme, Huell bumps into the valet car driver near a stairwell and takes Howard's keys off of him. Then, Huell's accomplice in a van made a copy of the key. When the valet car driver realizes the Jaguar keys are missing, he goes back and finds the keys lying on the ground behind the Jaguar and he is unaware that a copy was ever made.

23. Jimmy returns to visit the business of Betsy and Craig Kettleman but the second time he brings Kim along with him. What is the nature of the Kettleman's new business that they call Sweet Liberty?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E2 "Carrot and Stick"

Answer: Tax Services

Sweet Liberty Tax Services is a business located in the New Mexico desert that praes on Native Americans and other indigent people. The Kettlemans essentially act as third party liaisons to file taxes for their clients and then they only cut out a check for part of the refund money owed to their clients while the IRS pays the Kettlemans the full refund amount. Kim is onto their scheme and threatens the Kettlemans that she will initiate an audit of their business.

24. What car that had its first model year in 1986 does Jimmy rent and drive to dinner to meet Kim after which she tells him that Saul Goodman needs something with more flair?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E1 "Wine and Roses"

Answer: Ford Taurus

Of course the previous car that Jimmy/Saul owned was a 1998 Suzuki Esteem that was pushed into a ditch in the New Mexico desert. As the scene begins Jimmy is seen parking the brown Ford Taurus under a sign that read El Camino Dining Room. After their car talk, Kim delves right into their plan for how to bring down Howard to get the Sandpiper case settled.

25. What's the occupation of the mysterious man Howard meets at night?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E5 "Black and Blue"

Answer: Private Investigator

After Howard has justified this episode's name by beating Jimmy up, he meets a man waiting outside the gym. Genidowski the PI has been watching Jimmy from his car. Howard has hired this PI to follow Jimmy/Saul. To hopefully learn what Jimmy's up to. His plans, schemes, all the "cocaine" fabrications, etc. But there turns out to be more to Private Eye Genidowski than meets the eye...no pun intended...

26. The DA's office confronts Kim about Jimmy defending associates of the cartel. What individual, a former client of Jimmy, do they tell Kim has died in a fire down in Mexico?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E3 "Rock and Hard Place"

Answer: Eduardo 'Lalo' Salamanca

The DA shows Kim a picture of Eduardo 'Lalo' Salamanca and tells her that he is the same person as Jorge de Guzman, one of Jimmy's clients that recently skipped town after paying bail. Of course Kim already knows this but she acts as if this is news to her and asks why she is being told this. The DA, Suzanne Ericsen, explains to Kim that Lalo was killed in a fire and that the Albuquerque justice system failed by letting a cartel leader get away. She then implores her to tell Jimmy that he has to come clean about his ties to the cartel.

27. What action from the wheelchair bound Hector Salamanca does Gus Fring interpret to mean that Lalo Salamanca is still alive?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E2 "Carrot and Stick"

Answer: Offering Fring a handshake

Juan Bolsa and Gus Fring go to visit Hector Salamanca in the nursing home where he is living. While there, Juan tells Hector that they are all Don Eladio's men and that an attack against one of them is an attack against both and that there will be justice. Hector then struggles to put out his hand so that he can he can give Gus Fring a handshake. Knowing that this is not a common action for his rival Hector, after Gus leaves he tells Mike and his men that he believes that Lalo is still alive based on Hector's actions.

28. Ignacio "Nacho" Varga runs to a motel and a key is provided to him by the attendant. Once in his room, he receives a call that instructs him to wait for what mode of transport in a few days time?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E1 "Wine and Roses"

Answer: Farm truck

When Nacho enters his motel room there is an envelope on the bed that has cash and a gun. As Nacho's handler calls him he is informed that there will be a very narrow timeframe when a farm truck will pass through the area and Nacho will have to jump in. Nacho is instructed to lay low as there is a bounty on his head for the killings that took place at Lalo's house.

29. What gives stressed Gustavo Fring the clue as to why no one can locate Lalo in the USA?

From Quiz "Better Call Saul" S6:E5 "Black and Blue"

Answer: The Spice "Curls"

Gus's chief adversary (since Hector's stroke) has been Hector's nephew Eduardo, aka "Lalo". Lalo has officially been dead since Gus' hitmen attacked his home in Mexico. But Lalo Salamanca escaped and is pretending to be dead. But Gus knows better - and he cannot help wondering why his intricate network of spies cannot locate the elusive Cartel sociopath. But one day at Gus's restaurant, he recommends his new "Spice Curls" to a customer (named after the popular "Spice Girls"; this is 2004). At that moment, Gus recalls his German associate Peter Schuler (Peter introduced the spice curls at a recent conference), and then his OTHER German associate the late Werner Zielger. Good detective work, Gus. Gus knows Werner spoke to Lalo on the phone before Mike found him. Poor Werner inadvertently revealed too much about the secret underground construction. Could Lalo be in Germany, finding out about Werner? If so, he might learn about the unfinished superlab, too. Oh no! The last thing they need!
