Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. By exclaiming "There's no need to fear, Underdog is here!" this animated super-canine would go into action. The "Underdog" cartoon series began on NBC in October of 1964. In addition to our "K-9 hero" the show featured his girlfriend Sweet Polly Purebred as a TV reporter and Underdog's foes Riff Raff and Simon Bar Sinister. But who gave voice to the Underdog character?

Answer: Wally Cox

The creators of Underdog saw Wally Cox in the 1963 movie "Spencer's Mountain" and were impressed enough to ask him to voice their character. Wally had first achieved success playing a teacher on a live television sitcom in the 1950's called "Mister Peepers". Underdog's alter ego was that of Shoeshine Boy.

When Polly would exclaim by song "Oh where, oh where has my Underdog gone?" Shoeshine Boy would go into a phone booth but then emerge as our cartoon hero.
2. This cartoon character was famous for his phrases such as "Exit, stage left!" and "Heavens to Murgatroyd!" He was created in 1959 and used to pal around with his buddies Yogi Bear and Huckleberry Hound. Who is this cave-dwelling personality?

Answer: Snagglepuss

Snagglepuss was first an orange, then pink, mountain lion. He was voiced by Daws Butler. He was in several Hanna-Barbera cartoon episodes before he got his own TV series. The exclamation "Exit...stage left (or right)" was used just before this cartoon cat would leave the scene to try and flee from some danger.

The phrase "Heavens to Murgatroyd!" was originally used on screen by actor Bert Lahr in a 1944 film called "Meet the People". The similarities in Snagglepuss's delivery and speech patterns in comparison to Lahr's depiction of the Cowardly Lion in "The Wizard of Oz" are well documented.

In fact Lahr sued, but lost, when Snaggletooth was selected as a cartoon spokesman for Kellogg's cereals.
3. Snuffy Smith is a character created by cartoonist Billy DeBeck. Barney Google, originally the chief character in the comic strip that includes Snuffy, came to the mountains of North Carolina in 1934 and met the moonshiner Smith. Where did Snuffy call home?

Answer: Hootin' Holler

Snuffy's hamlet is described to be in "southern Appalachia". Other than some periodic visits Barney Google eventually was dropped from the strip. Snuffy is a short, lazy hillbilly who lives in a shack. He will shoot at anyone he deems as threatening, especially "revenooers" who may be looking for his still. Snuffy will cheat at every game he plays, even checkers. Snuffy is drawn as very shabbily attired with patches everywhere on his clothes.

He always talks out of the side of his mouth.
4. In the "Archie" comics what was only-child Archie Andrew's friend Jughead obsessed with?

Answer: Food

Jughead Jones thinks about eating constantly. He pretty much isn't interested in girls, or cars, or school (his grades are atrocious). Jughead can eat a lot of food in one sitting. Generally he is eating, or about to eat, in nearly all his appearances. Pop Tate's Chocklit Shoppe is his favorite hangout when hungry, which seems to be all the time. Mr. Jones is also an avid food eating competition contestant, which he usually wins.
5. Casper was "the Friendly Ghost". He tried to be helpful and kind in all of his episodes. However, there were three ghosts that made occasional visits in his comics and cartoons that weren't so friendly. Do you know who they are?

Answer: Fatso, Stinky, and Stretch

They are known as "The Ghostly Trio" and unfortunately are in Casper's family as uncles. Totally the opposite of Casper, this trio loves to scare people and they treat Casper poorly. Fatso is overweight and not very smart. Stinky (or Stinkie), obviously not a fan of personal hygiene, frightens off humans with his body odor. Stretch is the tall leader of the group and is voiced with a "New Jersey" accent.
He will go to great lengths to scare the daylights out of any living being.
6. Betty Boop was a very popular cartoon character in the 1930's. Her first cartoon short was called "Dizzy Dishes" and premiered on August 8th, 1930. Her trademark "boop-boop-a-doop" saying would frequently be voiced in song. However, she was initially an animal in her early appearances. Do you know which one?

Answer: Dog

Betty Boop was originally drawn as a French Poodle. As Betty's original look was not attractive the animator Grim Natwick eventually transformed her into the sultry, but sweet, "flapper" that she is best known for. The poodle ears were replaced by hoop earrings. Her fur was transformed into a "bob" haircut. Betty was always short on brains, but had a big heart.
7. The Heckle and Jeckle Cartoon Show aired on CBS as the CBS Cartoon Theater, starting in 1956. Heckle and Jeckle were inseparable. What type of birds were they supposed to be?

Answer: Magpies

Real Magpies are very intelligent and are one of the rare species that can recognize themselves in a mirror. Heckle and Jeckle were intelligent enough to stir up trouble but in a number of episodes their opponents won out in the end. It's a wonder how these two ever met to begin with as Heckle has a New York accent and Jeckle's is British.

There were fifty-two theatrical shorts featuring these talking magpies that were worked into the animated series.
8. Yogi Bear began as a character in "The Huckleberry Hound Show" in 1958. Yogi and his sidekick Boo Boo were two bears that lived in Jellystone Park. Yogi stole picnic baskets, tried to escape from the park, and got into all other sorts of trouble. Ranger Smith tried to stop his escapades and was occasionally successful. There was another bear involved who was female and a love interest of Yogi's. Who was Yogi's girlfriend?

Answer: Cindy Bear

Cindy Bear was given her starting roles with Yogi in "Acrobatty Bear", "A Wooin' Bruin" and "Yogi's Birthday Party". Cindy has a southern accent and carries a parasol around. Originally her fur was blue, but it soon became gray-beige. Cindy would also be decked out in a skirt, a scarf, and occasionally a hat. Cindy was also in a MetLife commercial.
9. Walter Lantz's Woody Woodpecker made his debut along with his trademark laugh in 1940 in an Andy Panda cartoon. Another famous voice actor did Woody's original voice. What person eventually became the person who had the permanent job of vocalizing for this nutty bird in the early 1950s?

Answer: Grace Stafford

Stafford, and who was also known as Gracie Lantz (Walter's wife), had worked as an actress. Mel Blanc was the first voice for Woody but Grace eventually got the job and provided Woody's vocalizations, including his famous "ha-ha-ha-HA-ha" laugh, for over twenty years. Woody finally got his own show on television with ABC television called, oddly enough, "The Woody Woodpecker Show".

It ran from October 1957 through September of 1958. Woody's cartoons were seen through the 1960s and '70s in syndication and various television shows. Woody got a makeover and began appearing on Fox Kids Network in 1999.
10. Rocky and Bullwinkle had their own show on television from 1959 to 1964. Rocket "Rocky" J. Squirrel was a flying squirrel. His best buddy was Bullwinkle J. Moose. Their cartoon series involved the pair frequently at odds with their adversaries, the two spies Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. What town did Rocky and Bullwinkle call home?

Answer: Frostbite Falls

Rocky and Bullwinkle lived in the fictional town of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota. The actual town of International Falls, Minnesota was cartoon creator Jay Ward's inspiration in creating this pretend "toon town". The incorrect answers in this question are Archie Andrew's hometown (Riverdale), Popeye's (Sweathaven), and The Jetson's (Orbit City).
