Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Old Girl's wedding do Joey and her friends attend early in the book?

Answer: Bernhilda Mensch

Bernhilda, Frieda's older sister and one of the original Chalet School pupils, is getting married to Marie von Eschenau's brother, Kurt. Her uncle, a bishop, takes the ceremony and several girls, including Joey, are bridesmaids. During the party afterwards, Joey finds out from Gertlieb, one of the maids, that Frieda's grandmother is seriously ill. Gertlieb says that Bernhilda told her not to tell anyone until she and Kurt had gone, and Joey tells her to hide behind a plant so nobody sees her crying.

After the happy couple leave, Joey breaks down in tears and tells Madge, and she and Jem inform Frieda's parents while Joey gets Frieda alone and tells her. Jem calls a halt to the celebrations and the Mensch family go to old Frau Mensch's bedside.

She dies shortly after, but the family are comforted by the fact that she will be reunited with Natalie, her dead baby daughter.
2. Joey takes Eustacia and another new girl, Greta McDonald, to their dormitory. Which aspect of the dormitory does Eustacia complain about?

Answer: The beds

Eustacia is an orphan who has been living with her aunt, uncle and cousins, but is making home life unbearable because the servants cannot stand her and she and her cousins are constantly quarrelling. At the suggestion of Grizel Cochrane's stepmother, Eustacia's aunt sends her to the Chalet School.

The girls are unsure what to make of Eustacia, as she speaks in a very formal manner and is extremely unfriendly. When Joey shows Eustacia and Greta to their dormitory, Eustacia immediately complains about the feather beds, saying that they are unsanitary and that she needs a mattress. Joey takes the girls to the common room and Eustacia immediately annoys the other Middles by accusing them of being rude and threatening to tell on them.
3. Eustacia steals the key to the library from Joey's desk and goes off on her own to read a book, which Joey discovers is from the staff shelves. How do the prefects punish her?

Answer: Ban her from the library

Eustacia angers her classmates by telling tales on them for innocuous offences such as drawing in a hymn book or playing Noughts and Crosses. Miss Wilson is unsympathetic and tells her that telling tales is not the done thing, that she has better things to do than listen to tales, and that if this were a boys' school, she would get beaten up. Later, Deira O'Hagen notices that Eustacia is missing and the girls search for her, until Margia Stevens sees a light on in the library, and Joey finds Eustacia reading in there.

Not only is she not supposed to be there, but she stole the key from Joey's desk, and is reading a book from the staff shelves without permission. As punishment, the prefects ban her from the library, reasoning that as she has used it out of hours, she cannot use it within the permitted times.

This kicks off a feud between Eustacia and Joey. Eustacia tries the same thing later on again when she steals a key to a science room and goes to read there, but knocks over a bottle of water which the teachers initially fear might be hydrochloric acid. Miss Wilson is furious with her, as if it had been acid, it would have damaged the floor, and Miss Annersley sends her to bed early.
4. Although Eustacia's favourite subject is Classics - her father being a Greek professor - which subject does she also find herself enjoying?

Answer: Music

Eustacia's father was a Greek professor and her mother was a doctor, and both of them used her as a test subject for their experimental theories on raising children. Eustacia has inherited her love of Classics from her father and takes it with the Fifth Form, along with maths, though her work in other subjects is average.

She even gets into an argument with Joey about Napoleon, one of Joey's heroes, saying he was a tyrant and 'just a good soldier', and Joey retorts that Greek heroes were not much better.

While attending a singing lesson with Mr Denny, Eustacia is impressed by his teaching and high standards and ends up enjoying herself. After class, she decides to write home and ask if she can take music.
5. What item does Eustacia accidentally leave behind in the Fifth Form room, which ends up causing a row between both forms?

Answer: Pen

Eustacia accidentally leaves her expensive fountain pen in the Fifth Form room after a French class and Margia Stevens jokes about giving it to Miss Stewart, who is very strict about carelessness. Miss Stewart comes in and assumes they are laughing at her. Margia reluctantly admits that the pen is Eustacia's and they are laughing about that, and Miss Stewart punishes her for wasting time by making her learn a Milton sonnet.

She confiscates the pen and when Eustacia discovers it is missing, Margia tells her that Miss Stewart took it and Eustacia goes to her to get it back, despite Anne Seymour warning her not to. Miss Stewart does not take this very well and keeps the pen until half term. Eustacia is angry and takes it out on Margia, and the two end up having a row.

The Fourth take Eustacia's side, while the Fifth side with Margia.
6. What happens to Miss Wilson during the expedition on the Stubai Glacier, when Eustacia accidentally bumps into her while pulling away from Joey?

Answer: She injures her foot.

Joey is unable to go to the Russells' home at half-term as usual, as Jem is hosting several doctors and there is no room, so Madge arranges a half-term trip to Fulpmes. On the list of excursions is the Stubai Glacier. Trouble starts when Joey accidentally throws coffee over Eustacia and Eustacia thinks she did it on purpose, but when the guide notices storm clouds and the party are climbing back down the mountain, Joey offers Eustacia her arm, Eustacia jerks away from Joey and accidentally bumps into Miss Wilson, who stumbles and hurts her ankle.

As a result, and because of the oncoming blizzard, the party have to seek refuge in a mountain hut and stay there overnight until the guide can get medical help for Miss Wilson. When they return to Fulpmes the following day, Joey discovers that the Robin is ill as a result of worrying about her, and blames Eustacia for her subsequent relapse. Miss Wilson also has to stay behind for a couple of weeks to recover.
7. The Fourth Form empty the ink from the Fifth Form's inkwells. What do the Fifth Form girls do in revenge?

Answer: Cover their clothes in cat hairs and cut buttons off blazers

Both apple pie beds and cobbler's wax are suggested but Anne Seymour comes up with the idea of getting the Fourth in trouble for untidiness, so between them, they remove the buttons from Cornelia Flower's blazer, rub other girls' blazers on the school cat's bed and cover them in cat hair, and cut one of Evadne Lannis' shoelaces. Matron is angry with the Fourth Form girls when they sees how messy they are and orders Cornelia to sew buttons onto her blazer, a task Cornelia hates. Several accidents also happen in the chapter: Mary Burnett, the Head Girl, falls and hurts herself while trying to get some life models down, Joey and Frieda tear a map, Deira spills coffee all over the floor, and Yellow and Amber dormitories have a pillow fight which results in a broken lightbulb and Amy Stevens getting hurt.

The following day, Simone Lecoutier is sent out of class for crying, Deira and Natasha Pokrovska bang their heads together while picking up Deira's pen, and Joey is in a bad mood because she didn't get a letter from Madge and is rude to both Jem and Eustacia after bumping into Eustacia on the stairs. Matron catches them arguing and splits them up, and this is the last straw for Eustacia.
8. Eustacia finally has enough and runs away from school, leaving a note behind. Which newspaper does she threaten to write to and ruin the school's reputation?

Answer: The Times

Eustacia plans to go home to England and write to the 'Times' about how she was treated, hoping to ruin the school. Several girls, including Joey, go to the dentist and are caught in a rainstorm on the way back. Herr Anserl, the music teacher, helps get them back to the school safely.

When they arrive, they are greeted by the other girls asking them where Eustacia has gone. Mlle Lepattre fears that she has run away and when Joey goes into Eustacia's dormitory, she finds a note from Eustacia addressed to her, blaming her for Eustacia running away. Miss Annersley realises Eustacia must have tried to get into Germany via the Tiern Pass, rather than going through Spärtz or Innsbruck and risking being recognised.

As it turns out, she's right.
9. While running away from school, Eustacia is caught in a flood and forced to hide in a cleft to escape the water. What happens to her as a result of spending several hours in a cramped position?

Answer: She injures her back.

Eustacia sneaks out early in the morning and plans to enter Germany on foot via the Tiern Pass, as there is no diligence (a type of stagecoach) service on Sundays. The rain starts to come down heavily and Eustacia misses a turn which would have taken her to the Tiern Pass.

She is caught in a flood and has to scramble up a mountainside and hide in a rock cleft to escape it. Because Eustacia is unable to move for several hours, and the cleft is very narrow, she eventually passes oit, and cannot hear the search parties calling her name. Gottfried Mensch thinks she might have tried to follow the stream and leads a search party the next day when the flood has gone down.

His party find Eustacia in the cleft and he gives her first aid, and Jem takes them back to the school.

Although Eustacia survives her ordeal, she has pulled a muscle in her back and this, combined with being in a cramped position in the cold for several hours, has injured her back. She spends the next two weeks bedridden and in terrible pain.
10. True or false: Eustacia changes her name to 'Stacie'.

Answer: True

Earlier on in the book, Joey had expressed disgust at the name 'Eustacia' and Mlle Lepattre had suggested calling her 'Stacie' for short. While Eustacia is in recovery, Jem explains to her that the only way for her to recover is to rest and try and keep calm, and also asks if there is any way of shortening her name. Eustacia mentions that Mlle Lepattre called her 'Stacie' when she came to visit, so Jem decides she will be 'Stacie' from now on and Eustacia agrees, as changing her name is a sign of turning a new leaf.

As she herself says, "Eustacia wasn't nice, as you say. But I know Stacie will do her best to be a real Chalet School girl now and always." Joey is amazed that Eustacia has allowed people to shorten her name and Madge takes this as a sign that she has changed. Eustacia also has her hair cut short. Joey goes to visit her and both girls apologise to each other. Eustacia also meets Gisela and Gottfried Mensch's new baby, who will be called Natalie in honour of Gottfried's late grandmother.
