Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Christian religious occasion always falls on the fortieth day after Easter?

Answer: Ascension Day

In the book of Acts in the Bible, this is when Jesus ascends to heaven after his crucifixion and resurrection. Did you know that Ascension Day always falls on a Thursday?
2. Which US president was born on October 1, 1924 in Georgia?

Answer: Carter

Rural boy Jimmy Carter worked hard to champion human rights and bring peace in the Middle East, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. He held office from 1977-1981 and was the thirty-ninth president of the United States.
3. In the famous Australian soap opera 'Neighbours', what is the surname of the family whose members include Lyn, Joe, Steph, Flick, Michelle and Harvey the dog?

Answer: Scully

The surname Scully derives from the Old Gaelic 'O'Scolaidhe', meaing 'scholar'. The Scully family are one of the gossip hotspots of Ramsay Street, although I can't think of a storyline that has involved Harvey so far.
4. 'You'll see him in your nightmares, you'll see him in your dreams. He'll appear out of nowhere, but he ain't what he seems'. These lines come from which song by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds?

Answer: Red Right Hand

The Bad Seeds were formed in the early 1980s and accompany Australian singer Nick Cave. 'Red Right Hand' comes from from the album 'Let Love In', which was released in 1994. It features the sound of an oscillator, an instrument I've only ever encountered in the physics lab at school!
5. In Herman Melville's 'Moby Dick', which character aboard ship befriends Ishmael the narrator, despite being described as a 'cannibal' from the South Seas?

Answer: Queequeg

In this 1851 book Queequeg was an experienced harpooneer from the island of Rokovoko, described by Melville as a 'tattooed savage'. He unfortunately didn't survive the story.
6. Who won England's Wimbledon tennis championship in 1996? Think hard...

Answer: Richard Krajicek

Dutch tennis-player Richard Krajicek was born in 1971 in Rotterdam. He clocks in at an amazing six foot five feet tall!
7. In early July 1947, a UFO supposedly crash-landed in which New Mexico town?

Answer: Roswell

Roswell was a community of farmers and ranchers that was hit by the scandal of the Roswell 'UFO' on July 4th 1947. Since then there have been many suggestions about what the object was, chief amongst which being the explanation that it was a weather balloon.
8. The UK organisation 'League Against Cruel Sports' campaigned against the hunting of wild animals. Which of the following wild creatures did they particularly campaign for the protection of?

Answer: Fox

Foxes, although increasingly spreading to city areas as urban foxes, have been hunted in rural Britain for around three centuries. The Latin name for the red fox is vulpes vulpes.
9. What does the Spanish word 'girasol' mean in English?

Answer: Sunflower

'Girasol', like the French 'tournesol' ('turn to the sun') means sunflower.
10. So then, putting all these diverse elements together, what are we left with (don't use a hyphen)?

Answer: The X Files

Yes, it's 'The X Files'. 1) 'ASCENSION' was the name of the all-important episode in series two of 'The X Files' where Scully was abducted. 2) Chris CARTER is the creator of 'The X Files'. 3) Dana SCULLY is the name of the female lead on the programme. 4) Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have been featured in the series, most notably in 'Ascension' when 'RED RIGHT HAND' was playing on Duane Barry's radio as he made off with Scully. 5) QUEEQUEG was the name of Scully's dog in season three 6) KRAJICEK is pronounced the same way as Krycek, the evil traitor working for the FBI who has plagued Mulder and Scully throughout the series. 7) ROSWELL is a famous UFO site that is mentioned dozens of times in 'The X Files' as the agents chase aliens across America. 8) FOX Mulder is the programme's male lead. 9) SUNFLOWER seeds are Mulder's favourite snack! Did you get my clue when I said the quiz should be 'EXtremely enjoyable'? Hope you got the questions right, and remember: Trust No-One...
