Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Perhaps the best-known illustrated canine in cartoon history, who is Charlie Brown's staunch companion in the "Peanuts" comic strip?

Answer: Snoopy

Born in 1950, Snoopy was the creation of Charles M. Schulz. Not only did Snoopy support his owner Charlie Brown, but was a character in his own right: dogfighting with the Red Baron in his Sopwith Camel (doghouse), seeking adventure in the French Foreign Legion (wearing a kepi with wimple over the back of his neck), playing baseball, cooking, and writing novels ("It was a dark and stormy night ...").
2. The many incarnations of Doctor Who have had even more companions over the series run on British television. Which traveling partner, played by Billie Piper, was introduced with the revival of the series in 2005, with the ninth and tenth incarnations of the doctor?

Answer: Rose Tyler

The return/continuation of Doctor Who in 2005 required a new companion and the former pop singer Billie Piper filled that role as Rose Tyler. Unlike those who filled the part before, she was given top billing in the show's credits. She continues to perform on stage, in films and on television.
3. In the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise, Rocket "Rocky" Raccoon is teamed with a sort of living tree who is able to speak only a single sentence. Who is Rocky's arboreal sidekick?

Answer: Groot

Rocky and Groot were best known through their Marvel comics until the 2014 Marvel film "Guardians of the Galaxy." Voiced by Vin Diesel, Groot is able to say only "I am Groot" (in the second film "We are Groot") but Rocky is able to understand all manner of meaning from these utterances. Groot has the remarkable propensity to sacrifice himself to save the other Guardians and then to somehow survive as a sprig or sprout from which he regrows.
4. Which manufacturer of washing machine-clothes dryer combinations made the first "companion washer" -- a miniature washing machine within its large washing machine -- called "the Sidekick"?

Answer: LG

The LG TwinWash system offered two washers -- one normal sized and one much smaller -- housed in the same unit. Others promptly followed. LG's system offered a very gentle handwash cycle for delicates and used cold water to prevent colour loss.
5. Who is the not-bright-but-happy cat who is the sidekick of the emotionally temperamental Chihuahua Ren Höek in the 1991-1995 animated Nickelodeon TV series?

Answer: Stimpy

Stimpson J. "Stimpy" Cat is Ren's partner and sometimes competitor, 'tho he is rarely clever enough to prevail over his friend. The show created major stress between its producers and its network due to its dark humor and sexual undertones. Guest voice actors included Dom DeLuise, Frank Gorshin, Gilbert Gottfried, Phil Hartman, Mark Hamill, Rosie O'Donnell, Randy Quaid and Frank Zappa.
6. In the NBC-TV sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie," USAF Captain Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman) is the "master" of Jeannie (Barbara Eden). Who is his Army captain sidekick?

Answer: Roger Healey

Astronaut Tony Nelson falls in love with a 2000-year-old genie; complications ensue. His pal throughout is girl-crazy fast-buck seeking U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officer Roger Healey, played by Bill Daily, who also played Howard Borden on "The Bob Newhart Show."
7. In the Busy and Busytown series of books and animations by Richard Scarry, who was the sidekick to Lowly Worm?

Answer: Huckle Cat

Lowly Worm appears in many of the works of Richard Scarry. He is an anthropomorphic worm who wears one shoe, a tubular pair of pants, a tubular shirt, a red bow tie and a Tyrolean hat. Lowly's best friend is Huckle Cat with whom he goes to school. The artist's son, Richard Scarry Jr., sometimes worked under the pseudonym Huck Scarry, from which Huckle Cat's name was derived.
8. In the British comic-book series (and movies and novels) "Modesty Blaise," who is Modesty's trusted sidekick?

Answer: Willie Garvin

In the backstory, Modesty is engaged in a criminal enterprise into which she recruits Willie Garvin. There is no romance in their relationship. The comic books led to the movies which led to the novels (and collections of short stories). There were also radio programmes made of some of the stories. Willie calls her "Princess" while all her minions call her "Mam'selle." He is a British orphan who served in the French Foreign Legion at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.

He speaks five languages fluently and quotes Psalms frequently, having been imprisoned for a year in Calcutta with only a Psalter to read.
9. Not to be found in Victor Hugo's classic novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," who were Quasimodo's three companions in the 1996 Disney animated version?

Answer: Victor, Hugo and Laverne

Victor Hugo wrote "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in 1831. Walt Disney appropriated some of the novel and all of its title for his 1996 animated film version. In the Disney take, Quasimodo, the bell ringer, has three companions, stone gargoyles who can talk, named Victor, Hugo and Laverne.
10. In Rudyard Kipling's "Jungle Book" and "Second Jungle Book", who is the bear who teaches the cubs (including Mowgli) the law of the jungle?

Answer: Baloo

Kipling derived Baloo's name from the Hindi word for bear: bhalu. In the books from 1894 and 1895, Baloo is a strict teacher. In the Walt Disney movie (1967), he is more carefree and jovial. His friendship with and fatherly feelings toward Mowgli lead him to risk his own life to protect the Man Cub.
