Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1942 motion picture "Casablanca," who is Rick's (Humphrey Bogart's) piano-playing sidekick portrayed by Dooley Wilson?

Answer: Sam

Sam is the piano player in Rick's Café. His rendition of "As Time Goes By" is central to the movie. He serves as a trusted companion to Rick, as someone who looks after Rick when he is drunk, and as a sort of elder brother who tries to prevent Rick from breaking his heart over Ilsa. Wilson also appeared in other films: "My Favorite Blonde" (1942), "Stormy Weather" (1943) and "Passage West" (1951).
2. On the MTV game show "Singled Out" (1995-1998), host Chris Hardwick was paired with which co-host for the first three years of the programme?

Answer: Jenny McCarthy

Jenny McCarthy was replaced on "Singled Out" by Carmen Electra when McCarthy got her own sitcom "Jenny." She appeared nude in "Playboy" in 1993. She is a virulent anti-vaccine advocate claiming that her son's autism is the product of vaccination. Hardwick said she was his sidekick; she claimed to be his co-star.
3. In the "Men in Black" franchise (movies, comic books, video games), who is the Remoolian disguised as a dog who becomes Agent J's partner?

Answer: Frank the Pug

Frank appears in both the first and second "Man in Black" movies, with a larger role in the second than in the first. He looks like a pug dog but is actually an extraterrestrial. Frank was played in both movies by Mushu, a real pug. When Frank became a field agent his name was changed to Agent F.
4. In the New Testament, which Cypriot Levite brought Saul/Paul before the Apostles and became his compatriot in missionary ministry?

Answer: Barnabas

According to the Book of Acts, Barnabas accepted Saul's conversion as genuine and brought Paul before the Apostles. Their relationship was, at first, one in which Paul assisted Barnabas in his ministry (Acts 11:19-30) but this was soon reversed and Barnabas became Paul's sidekick. They eventually went their separate ways.
5. The Hanna-Barbera cartoon series starring Touché Turtle depicted him as a dashing swordsman like Inigo Montoya or d'Artagnan. Who was his sheep-dog sidekick?

Answer: Dum Dum

Touché Turtle and Dum Dum were created in 1962, along with Wally Gator, Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har. Cartoons about their adventures were shown ensemble with the others. They also appeared on BBC twice -- once in the 70s and again in the 80s. Touché and Dum Dum responded to cries for rescue across time lines which made no sense: in one episode, they "helped" Napoleon Bonaparte and, in another, they were in the American Old West.

In many of these episodes, a telephone could be heard ringing and Touché would withdraw into his shell to answer it.
6. In the NBC TV series "The Rockford Files," who was investigator Jim Rockford's father and sidekick?

Answer: Joseph "Rocky" Rockford

When Jim Rockford (James Garner) was released from San Quentin prison after being pardoned from a wrongful conviction, he became a private eye. His father, Joseph "Rocky" Rockford (Noah Beery Jr.), a retired truck driver, tried to talk his son into a better (and safer) occupation.
7. In the beginning of "Wind in the Willows," Mole meets a new friend who become his companion throughout the stories. Who is this sidekick?

Answer: Rat

Mole is spring cleaning when the outdoors and river calls to him. There he finds Rat (who is actually a water vole) and they becoming enduring friends. Kenneth Grahame retired from the Bank of England in 1908 and turned the bedtime stories he had told his son Alastair into the book. It was a favourite of President Theodore Roosevelt.
8. In the television commercials for Hawaiian Punch in the 1960s, who was the poor little fellow who was forever getting punched?

Answer: Oaf

The Hawaiian Punch ads were created by the Atherton Privett agency in 1962 and became immediately popular. The larger Hawaiian character, Punchy, would ask his sidekick, Oaf, "Hey! How about a nice Hawaiian Punch?" to which Oaf would always reply "Sure." And that is how Oaf got beat up so many times.
9. The Brain, a laboratory white mouse, is subjected to the Acme Gene Splicer, Bagel Warmer, and Hot Dog Steamer which makes him brilliant. In Steven Speilberg's animated American TV series, who is his sidekick?

Answer: Pinky

"Pinky and the Brain" began as a short within "The Animaniacs" in 1993; it became its own show in 1995. Most episodes parody a movie, novel or TV programme. In almost all of them, Brain has an idea for how to take over the world, with which Pinky goes along. Pinky's brain was also advanced by Dr. Mordough at Acme Labs but not nearly as much as Brain's.
10. In "Peanuts", who is Snoopy's best friend and sidekick?

Answer: Woodstock

Woodstock was not an original character in Charles M. Schultz' 1950 comic strip "Peanuts". In 1967, Woodstock landed on Snoopy's nose and stayed to become his sidekick, airplane mechanic, golf caddy and bridge partner. Woodstock speaks but only Snoopy understands him.
