Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wheat, corn and barley are three of the commodities in the original version of the card game Pit. Various versions have been produced over the years and the commodities have not always been the same. What are the four additional commodities from the original version of the game?

Answer: rye, hay, flax and oats

All of the commodities included in the incorrect answers are in at least one version of the game. The original game was released in 1903 and it contained seven commodities. Modern versions have not only changed the commodities, but the number of commodities included has been eight rather than seven.
2. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, peppercorns and ginger are the resources players use in Goa, a spice traders game. These spices can be obtained in all but which of the following ways?

Answer: through trade with other players

If players have an open space on a plantation or colony tile they may also obtain spices by using the harvest action during the action phase. The game was designed by Rudiger Dorn.
3. In Settlers of Catan, players use resources to build roads, settlements and cities. Which resources are needed to upgrade a settlement to a city?

Answer: grain and ore

Three ore and two grain are needed to upgrade a settlement to a city. Only four cities are available to each player during the game and each city doubles the amount of resources received when the appropriate dice number is rolled. The game was designed by Klaus Teuber.
4. Which tile-laying game gives players resources such as sheep and stone when tiles are activated?

Answer: Glen More

Other resources in Glen More are cattle, wood and grain. A unique feature of this game is that players don't simply score points for the various things they accumulate such as whiskey barrels or special tiles, but by a comparison of how many they have in comparison to the player with the fewest. The game was designed by Matthias Cramer.
5. Some games enable players to score points with resources they have available during endgame scoring. Which of the following games have this rule?

Answer: Stone Age and Caylus

Although the resources in Stone Age have different values during gameplay, all remaining resources count one point during endgame scoring. Gold is a resource in Caylus that is worth more points than all other resources during endgame scoring. These games were designed by Michael Tummelhofer (Stone Age)and William Attia (Caylus).
6. In Puerto Rico, occupied plantations produce resources or goods during the craftsman phase when players have occupied buildings for the corresponding goods. Only one resource does not require a building for production. Which resource is it?

Answer: corn

Having corn plantations is advantageous at this point, but corn is not as valuable as the other goods and it is not worth any doubloons when sold during the trader phase. When shipped, corn is worth the same as all other goods. The game was designed by Andreas Seyfarth.
7. Numerous games include food as an important part of gameplay. In which game is food specifically used as a resource?

Answer: Caylus

Food functions somewhat like a resource in Agricola with the use of some of the occupation cards, but it is not technically a resource. Terra Mystica is a complex worker placement game that does involve resources, but food is not one of them. The game was designed by William Attia.
8. Power Grid is a game in which players compete to supply power to cities across a map. What are the resources that player can buy to meet the demands for power?

Answer: coal, oil, garbage and uranium

The decisions players make have an effect on the availability of resources, of course, but they also bring about changes in the cost of the various resources. This economy in the game leads to great depth of strategy. Wind farms and solar plants are "renewable" and do not require resources. The game was designed by Friedemann Friese.
9. Rokoko and Caylus are both games that include cloth as a resource. The other resources in Caylus are primarily building materials. What additional sewing resources are a part of Rokoko?

Answer: lace and yarn

Rokoko, a 2013 release, is a game set in the time of Louis XV in which players are tasked with creating dresses and coats for a royal ball. This game has an interesting game mechanic that involves deck building and tile placement. The game was designed by Matthias Cramer, Louis Malz and Stefan Malz.
10. Which worker placement game includes a domestic market that causes the price of resources such as fish, wood, stone, iron and cattle to fluctuate?

Answer: Archipelago

Archipelago was released in 2012 and is a game of exploration and development of islands that are already occupied by a native population. Players have to keep these original inhabitants happy as they try to gather resources and build colonies. Negotiation among the players is an important aspect of this game. The game was designed by Christophe Boelinger.
