Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film opens on Elizabeth Swann's wedding day. She is due to marry Will Turner, and we see her waiting at the altar alone, the rain pounding down around her. She soon sees her husband-to-be, but he is being held by the British forces on the island. She soon finds that both she and Will are arrested, but under what charge?

Answer: Aiding the release of Captain Jack Sparrow

As she runs to meet Will, she states that "it's bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding". Elizabeth's father, governor Weatherby Swann, runs to Will's defence, but soon finds out that not only is Will to be arrested, but his daughter is too. Although Mr Swann objects to the charges, Will is soon imprisoned. There is, however, a get-out clause that soon appears.
2. Later, we see Captain Jack Sparrow getting drunk on rum aboard the Black Pearl, his ship. When he runs out of his beloved rum, Jack decides to venture into the ship's hold to find more of his drink. He soon stumbles across a character, however, who gives him the dreaded black spot - a sign that Davy Jones is after him. Who delivers this so-called spot?

Answer: "Bootstrap" Bill Turner

The black spot begins to grow quickly on Jack Sparrow's palm, and throughout the first half of the film, he keeps it bandaged. Davey Jones is in fact seeking Jack Sparrow, as his 13 years as captain of the Black Pearl have come to an end. Jack tries to argue that he was only captain for two years due to a mutiny, but Davy Jones points out that Jack has been introducing himself as "Captain Jack Sparrow" for 13 years, and so his time is up.
3. Will is told by the current commodore of the island that both he and his wife-to-be, Elizabeth, can be officially pardoned if they can track down Jack Sparrow and requisition his compass. Aided by a local spice trader, Will soon finds himself on an island inhabited by cannibals. What fate befalls Will, and the crew of the Black Pearl?

Answer: They are sealed in bone spheres above a ravine.

By swinging these mesh cages, the crew of the Black Pearl find that they are able to grab the tree roots that line the side of the ravine. A race soon ensues as the two cages of crew realise that whoever manages to get free first will be able to take the Black Pearl and escape. Fortunately for Will Turner and Gibbs, their caged opponents fall to their death after one grabs hold of a snake and panics.
4. Captain Jack Sparrow's fate, however, is far more gruesome. The cannibalistic tribe of the island believe that he is a God, trapped inside the body of a mortal. How do these cannibals intend to free the God from its fleshy prison?

Answer: They plan to cook and eat Captain Jack Sparrow.

Jack escapes as the tribe leave the village to recapture the crew of the Black Pearl, who have escaped. Jack manages to free himself and runs towards another village, still tied to the spit. Here, he is bombarded with fruit by villagers before jumping over a cliff, falling down a ravine, getting stuck a few feet over the water.
5. After their stressful ordeal on the island of cannibals, Jack, Will, and the remaining crew of the Black Pearl go and visit Jack's friend, the Voodoo Priestess. After telling her about the mysterious "black spot" and the curse of Davy Jones, the Priestess gives Jack something in return for a payment. What is the payment Jack offers, and what does he receive?

Answer: Jack offers an undead monkey for information about the key.

The Voodoo Priestess then gives Captain Jack a jar of dirt when she hears he is being chased by Davy Jones. The dirt will keep Jack safe, as Davy Jones is only allowed to set foot on land once every decade. The monkey, which was given to the Voodoo Priestess, was seen earlier in the film chewing on a prosthetic eye.

Although it was given to the Priestess caged, she soon set it free, much to the dismay of the crew who has spent a long time catching it. While there, Jack elects to steal one of the Priestess's rings.
6. Armed with the information from the Voodoo Priestess and the diagram of the key that he stole earlier, Will Turner and Captain Jack Sparrow set sail to find Davy Jones's ship, the Flying Dutchman. Jack coaxes Will to board a wrecked ship in an attempt to find the key, and soon encounters the crew of the Flying Dutchman, and Davy Jones himself. Davy Jones decides that Will Turner is to be kept as part of his crew, but demands a further 99 souls from Captain Jack, so that Jack can keep his life. Where do the crew of the Black Pearl decide to go to harvest these 99 souls?

Answer: Tortuga

When Will boards the ship that has just been wrecked by the Kraken, he finds the crew still desperately trying to escape their situation. Davy Jones boards the wrecked ship to collect the souls of the crewmen. Some refuse to join Davy Jones and are killed on the spot, but Will Turner and a few others are taken aboard the Flying Dutchman, and this is where Will meets his father, "Bootstrap" Bill Turner.
7. In Tortuga, the crew sit at a stall in the corner of a bar and wait for people to sign up. Here, we see Elizabeth Swann dressed as a male sailor, and Norrington, a character from the previous film. After signing up, Norrington causes a commotion in the bar and a massive fight ensues. The fight continues until Norrington is knocked unconscious by Elizabeth, as she hits him across the head with a bottle. Where does Norrington end up?

Answer: In a pig sty

After the fight, we see the crew of the Black Pearl and their new recruits on the pier. Norrington is still covered in dirt, and is soon joined by Elizabeth Swann. She tells Jack Sparrow that she is "looking for the man (she) loves". Jack then gives Elizabeth the compass, convincing her that finding the chest is also the best chance of her being reunited with Will, and so as this is what she most desires, the compass points the crew to the Dead Man's Chest.
8. Aboard the Flying Dutchman, Will Turner sees his fellow crewmen playing a dice based game on the deck. He notices that they are betting their years of service to Davy Jones on the outcome of these dice, and so Will challenges Davy Jones himself to a game. They are soon joined by Will's father, and while both Will and Bill Turner offer an eternity of service to Davy Jones, Davy bets the key to the Dead Man's Chest. Where is the key kept?

Answer: In his tentacles

During the game, it appears that Will is about to lose his life to Davey Jones, until Bill places a bet which cannot be topped. Although Bill Turner ends the game having to serve Davy Jones for eternity, Will now knows where the key is, and so while Davy Jones sleeps soundly over his organ, Will steals the key and escapes the boat.

After leaving the Flying Dutchman, Will is picked up by an East India Company ship. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Swann and Captain Jack Sparrow have set sail to search for the chest.
9. Now armed with Jack's trusty compass, Elizabeth Swann, Norrington and Jack Sparrow follow the compass to a small, sandy island. As they unearth the chest, the crew begin to squabble. Each of the crewmembers desires the key which Will later arrives with, but which of the following names is not matched with the correct reason for wanting the key so much?

Answer: Elizabeth Swann - She wants the heart as a wedding gift.

Elizabeth, in fact, wants the key so that she can use the heart to save Will. The three men begin to fight over the possession of the key, and the three-way duel soon takes them to the abandoned mill atop the hill. While fighting their way along the rooftops, Will Turner and Norrington soon find themselves rolling down the aforementioned hill on the mill wheel. Jack Sparrow also joins them as the wheel plucks him from the ground and carries him away.
10. Having seemingly won the duel for possession of the key, Jack runs back towards the beach and opens the chest. As the crew are being chased by the crew of Davy Jones, Captain Jack has to work quickly to hide the heart, which he has taken out of the chest. Where does Jack hide the heart?

Answer: Inside the jar of dirt

Norrington soon realises where the heart has been hidden, and elects to distract Davy Jones's crew by running back into the forest with the empty chest. He relinquishes the empty chest, which is then picked up by one of Davy Jones's servants (who, incidentally, has a hermit crab for a head). Jack Sparrow and company then leave the island with the heart.
11. The Flying Dutchman is in pursuit of the Pearl. As the wind is blowing in the right direction, the Black Pearl sails out of range of the cannon fire of the Flying Dutchman. Davy Jones, therefore, decides to awaken the Kraken. How do they do this?

Answer: The crew turn a wheel, causing a pillar below the ship to strike the water. The resulting noise awakens the beast.

Jack attempts to use the heart to protect himself and the crew from the mighty Kraken, but finds he does not have the heart in his jar. To try and negate the attacks of the fearsome Kraken, the crew fire their cannons and guns at the beast's tentacles as they raise from the water. Aware that this is not helping, Will Turner orders the crew to gather all of the gunpowder and rum aboard this ship and hoist it onto deck. Captain Jack then shoots the substances in the hoist, and the tentacles of the Kraken are badly burned and marred.
12. With the Kraken still attacking the Black Pearl, even after using cannons and gunpowder to try and stop the beast, the crew decide to leave the ship and let the Kraken destroy it. Elizabeth soon realises that it is actually Jack Sparrow that the Kraken seeks and so, as she kisses him goodbye to distract him, she handcuffs him to the mast to go down with the ship.

Answer: True

As Elizabeth is kissing Jack Sparrow, you can see the jealousy on Will Turner's face. Elizabeth claims that she kisses Jack to say "thank you" as she climbs into the small boat that the crew are escaping on. She also says that Captain Jack Sparrow he decided to go down with the ship.

This is clearly not true, however, as we see Jack Sparrow using the oil from a nearby lamp to try and slip out of the cuffs. As he manages to do this, the Kraken's mouth opens, supposedly swallowing Jack Sparrow and pulling down the ship.
13. After the loss of their great friend Captain Jack Sparrow, the remaining crew of the Black Pearl visit the Voodoo Priestess to carry out a make-shift funeral. Candles are lit and drinks given to each person present, but a character from the previous film makes an appearance and questions the crew about the disappearance of his ship. To which character am I referring?

Answer: Captain Barbossa

Captain Barbossa, accompanied by his faithful undead monkey (which had earlier been given to the Voodoo Priestess by Jack Sparrow) appears from around the corner of a spiral staircase. At this point, the film ends on a nail-biting cliff-hanger.
14. Of course Captain Jack did not have the heart, and it was Norrington who ended up the victor. He took the heart with him after escaping the sinking ship, but to whom did he give it at the end of the film?

Answer: Cutler Beckett

Norrington appears in the headquarters of the East India Company at the end of the film, and presents the president of the company with a bag which contains the heart. When asked if he had recovered the compass, Norrington claims that he has something "far better". We see the president of the company pick up the bag and feel the beating of the heart, and smiles.
15. Throughout the film, there are scenes inside Cutler Beckett's office, part of the East India Company. In each scene we see a mural being painted on the wall of the office, and this is commented upon at one point. What does the mural depict?

Answer: A map of the world

The East India Company in this film, as in real life, dealt in spices and had a monopoly on all trade in the East Indies, where the film is set. Throughout the film, there are references to spice traders, and at one point, Captain Jack Sparrow even seasons himself with East India Company paprika on the island of cannibals.
