Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Elizabeth doing when we first see her?

Answer: crying in the rain

This dramatic beginning to the movie lets us know in no uncertain terms that things are amiss, as Elizabeth is wearing a wedding dress and veil, and holding a bouquet of flowers. We are not left to wonder for long and Will is soon brought into the scene in handcuffs. Elizabeth is also arrested and they are both charged with the offense of aiding Jack Sparrow's rescue. Elizabeth is played by Keira Knightley, and Will is played by Orlando Bloom.
2. Captain Jack Sparrow makes a more flamboyant entrance in the movie, shooting his way out of a coffin that has been set to sea. What creature does he kill when he shoots his way out?

Answer: a raven

Sparrow's coffin is just one of a large number of prison coffins that are set adrift in the sea. A raven flies down, lands on one of the coffins and begins pecking at the lid, letting us know that this one is different in some way from the rest. Jack fires his pistol through the lid of the coffin, blowing open a rather large hole and killing the bird in the process.
Jack Sparrow is played by the incomparable Johnny Depp.
3. One of the characters has the role of being the keeper of the legends, a function that he has performed in both of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. He is the one who usually makes sense out of Jack's sometime erratic behaviour, by explaining the story that either drives or motivates him. Who is this character?

Answer: Gibbs

When we first meet Gibbs, in "The Curse of the Black Pearl" he is a crew member upon the ship carrying Governor Swann and the young Elizabeth. When we next meet him, he is drunk and passed out on the island of Tortuga. He joins up with Sparrow, in his quest to regain the Pearl, and has been his second in command ever since. In "Dead Man's Chest" Gibbs explains some of the stories surrounding Davy Jones to Elizabeth and Will (and by extension to us in the audience), including Jones' control of the sea monster known as the Kraken.

He also explains to Will the fate that awaits Jack at the hands of the cannibals. Gibbs is played by Kevin McNally.
4. Pintel and Ragetti make their entrance into the movie in a row boat, making their way towards the beached Pearl. Ragetti is reading a bible, having suddenly become concerned with the future dispensation of his soul, now that he is human again. What is so odd about this?

Answer: He can't read.

Not only is he holding the bible upside down, but Pintel also points out, rather dismissively, that Ragetti can't read. Ragetti's response to this is that he believes he will get points for trying. While Ragetti is missing one eye, he can still see with the other one.
Pintel and Ragetti are played by Lee Arenberg and Mackenzie Crook, respectively.
5. In his search for Jack (and Jack's compass, which he hopes to exchange for Elizabeth's freedom) Will finds himself swimming ashore on an island where the Black Pearl has been beached by the low tide. Will is soon captured by the inhabitants of that island, and placed in one of the two cages that hold the remaining crew from the Pearl. These cages are dangling from a rope strung across a deep gorge. What are the cages made from?

Answer: bone

Will asks Gibbs what happened to the rest of the crew, and Gibbs remarks that the cages weren't built until after they were captured. We then get a closer look at the cage and see that they have indeed been built out of the bones, presumably those of the rest of the crew, whom we assume have been eaten by the natives.
6. Tied to a spit and left roasting over a fire, Jack is able to escape by making the spit bounce out of the upright sticks that are holding it. He runs away even though he is still bound to the spit. He encounters a group of natives who try and prevent his escape. What do they throw at him?

Answer: fruit

As Jack tries to dodge the hurled fruit he spins around, which results in the fruit becoming impaled on the spit still tied to his back, at both ends. He ends up looking like a giant shish kabob by the time they are done with him. The complete escape, which is sometimes aided and sometimes hindered by this giant spit, is quite comical.
7. Jack sends Will over to the Flying Dutchman to negotiate with Davy Jones, not knowing that Jack is willing to sacrifice him in the repayment of his debt. Here Will is sentenced to five lashes. Who administers those lashes?

Answer: his father

Will and his father are hoisting a cannon into the air when each realizes who the other is and the cannon crashes to the deck. Will is to receive five lashes for this, at the bosun's hand, but his father protests. Amused by this turn of events, Davy Jones gives Bill Turner the job of lashing his own son. Bill originally resists, but finally does the deed because his lashes would be less severe than any coming from the boson, who prides himself in cleaving flesh from the bone.
Stellan Skarsgard plays Bootstrap Bill Turner.
8. What does Davy Jones have instead of a left hand?

Answer: a claw

Jones' hand looks like a lobster or a crab's claw. His right hand is shaped more like a normal hand, although the middle finger looks and operates as a tentacle, while his head is a mass of tentacles. Many of the crew of the Flying Dutchman have sea creatures incorporated as part of their bodies.
Davy Jones is played by Bill Nighy.
9. Will watches the crew of the Flying Dutchman play a game on the deck, wagering years of servitude to Davy Jones. Will then challenges Davy Jones to a round of this game, betting servitude on the Flying Dutchman against the key to the chest that contains Jones' heart. What is the game that they play?

Answer: Liar's Dice

Also referred to as Deceit or Deception, the game involves each player tossing a cupful of dice, which he keeps hidden from the rest. The players then bet on what numbers are showing on all of the dice, with any one player being able to challenge the other at any time. When a player is challenged, the dice are revealed. If he is wrong, he loses.
Unwilling to see his son enter in Jones' servitude, Bill Turner also joins the game and makes sure that he is the loser, wagering an eternity of servitude to Davy Jones.
10. What item does Bill give Will, before Will escapes the ship with Jones' key?

Answer: a dagger

Distressed at the sacrifice his father made, Will vows to kill Jones and free his father from this bet. He promises to use the dagger given to him by his father to stab Jones' heart, thereby killing him. The piece of Aztec gold was something that Bill sent to his then young son, prior to the story of "The Curse of the Black Pearl".
