Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After her father gets her out of prison, Elizabeth stows away on a ship of honest seamen, in her quest to find and help Will. How does she convince them to travel to Tortuga?

Answer: She writes the word on the deck in gun powder and sets fires to it.

When the men find her wedding dress, they become very nervous about having a woman onboard, and argue about whether she is real or a ghost. She uses this superstition to her advantage, rigs the dress up with strings and makes it float above the deck. She uses the dress to knock over a lantern that sets the oil on fire, leaving the word Tortuga written in flames.

The superstitious men take this as an omen, and decide to head to Tortuga.
2. Seeking 100 people (actually 99 more besides Will) to pay his debt to Davy Jones, Captain Sparrow has gone to Tortuga to recruit these men. What familiar face applies to sign on as a crew member of the Black Pearl?

Answer: James Norrington

Norrington's fortunes have changed considerably. He no longer has his commission or his title, has obviously been drinking and looks very much the part of a pirate. His changes of fortune have occurred because he allowed Jack Sparrow to escape at the end of the first adventure, when he gave him a head start as a favour to Elizabeth and Will. Seeking to clear his name, Norrington has his own agenda for joining up with Sparrow, who allows him to sign on because he believes that he will simply be handing Norrington over to Davy Jones.
Norrington is played by Jack Davenport.
3. Elizabeth arrives in Tortuga as Jack is signing on his crew, so to speak. She is still dressed in her stow-away clothes, so she is initially mistaken for a man. What does Jack say when he realizes who she is?

Answer: "Hide the rum."

Jack's comment, made to Gibbs, is in reference to the time when he and Elizabeth were abandoned on a deserted island in "The Curse of the Black Pearl". After pretending to drink herself unconscious with him, Elizabeth added the rum to a bonfire that she built as a signal for rescue. Jack was then distressed to find the rum gone.
4. After Will leaves the Flying Dutchman, he gets picked up by the ship that Elizabeth had stowed away upon. How does he know that she was once on the ship?

Answer: He sees her wedding dress.

Will's face, when he sees the dress, leaves little doubt that he recognizes it. When the ship is attacked by the Kraken, sent by Davy Jones to deal with the escaping Will, one of the sailors assumes that it is after the dress, and offers it to the monster.
5. Jack's very special compass points to what the holder's heart desires the most. However for some reason the compass doesn't seem to be working for Jack, and never fixes itself on one direction. Who does the compass seem to work for?

Answer: Elizabeth

Jack convinces Elizabeth that the contents of the chest are what she will need to save Will, and then relies on the heading that the compass provides when she is holding it. It does indeed work, and leads them to the spot where the chest is buried, but on a couple of occasions it seems to be pointing at Jack instead, which distresses Elizabeth enormously.
6. What is it that Will, Jack and Norrington fight for possession of?

Answer: key

Each man seeks the key (which Will has taken from Davy Jones) so that they can use what is in the chest (Davy Jones' heart) for their own purposes. Will seeks to stab the heart, thereby killing Jones and winning freedom for his father, Norrington wants to take it back to Cutler Beckett so he can clear his name and regain his standing. Jack wants to clear his debt with Davy Jones, so that he doesn't have to serve him for 100 years.

This stand-off results in a very well choreographed fight scene, in a rolling water wheel from an old mill.
7. Why won't Sparrow let Will stab the heart, thereby killing Davy Jones?

Answer: He needs Jones to call off the monster.

Davy Jones controls the monster known as the Kraken, and he has sent it out to get Sparrow. Sparrow fears that if Jones is killed before the Kraken is called off, then the Kraken will pursue him forever. Will has made a vow to his father that he will kill Jones, and release his father from an eternity of servitude, so he is determined to stab the heart with the dagger that his father gave him.
8. Aside from the brief diversion, when Davy Jones sends the Kraken after Will, who or what is the Kraken seeking throughout the movie?

Answer: Captain Jack Sparrow

The first ship that we see the Kraken destroy is manned by two pirates who had just lifted Jack's hat from out of the ocean and who are fighting about who gets to wear it.
The second ship we see it destroy is the one that Will has been taken aboard, even though he manages to escape.
The third ship it destroys is the Black Pearl, and it is drawn there because Jack is on the ship. Elizabeth figures this out, which is why she tricks Jack into remaining onboard the Pearl while everyone else escapes.
9. How does Elizabeth get Jack to stay onboard the Pearl and give everyone else a chance to escape?

Answer: She slips a manacle on him while distracting him with a kiss.

Jack does do the honourable thing by returning to help them fight, and Elizabeth uses this fact to lull Jack into believing that she wants him. After she attaches the manacle, she tells him that she doesn't feel bad for doing it, and he calls her a pirate. Already in the escape boat, Will looks up and sees her kissing Jack, but does not know that she is only doing it to catch him off his guard. Elizabeth does not tell anyone what she has done, choosing to give Jack a hero's stature by letting people believe that this is his choice.
10. Where do they go once the Pearl has been sunk, and Jack presumably killed?

Answer: to see Tia Dalma

Depleted in numbers and depressed over the events of the day, they return to the woman whose advice Jack has previously sought. She gives them some hope of recovering Jack and asks how far they are willing to go to recover him. She then produces Captain Barbossa to be their guide in the next adventure.
