Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The kraken is a "terrible beastie" indeed. Its name comes from what language group, according to the pirates?

Answer: Scandinavian

The kraken is the gigantic sea monster that has been sent by Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) to chase down Captain Jack Sparrow. Often pictured in seafaring legend as a giant squid, the kraken's name origin is discussed during a debate between the bumbling duo of Pintel and Ragetti (Lee Arenberg and Mackenzie Crook) as to whether it should be pronounced "Kray-ken" or Crack-en".
2. The Voodoo priestess Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris) is a great new character. Which of the following items is NOT among the objects scattered around her odd household?

Answer: A skull with a burning candle stuck to it

Tia Dalma, who will apparently reappear to help the Black Pearl crew in their next adventure, seems to have had some kind of past romantic relationship with Sparrow. Her snake resembles an albino Burmese python, a non-poisonous snake. By the way, early in the movie some of the Black Pearl crewmen fall off a cliff because a snake falls on them.

Although it resembles the poisonous coral snake, its most likely a non-poisonous red kingsnake, because it has adjoining red and black bands instead of red and yellow ones.
3. When Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) is told that you can get delicious "long pork" on the island where he's hoping to find the Black Pearl, he might guess what kind of inhabitants he will find there. In fact, they are what?

Answer: Cannibals

"Long pig" or "long pork" are well-known piratical euphemisms for human meat. Will gets a second clue on the island when he encounters pirate Cotton's blue and gold mackaw parrot, which squawks "Don't eat me!" It's not much of a surprise when he later discovers not only the Pearl, but also her captain and crew on the island, captives of a cannibal tribe.
4. The crew of Davy Jones' ship the Flying Dutchman have a very close relationship to the creatures of the sea. In fact, various sailors seem to be turning into all the animals listed EXCEPT what?

Answer: Seahorse

The Flying Dutchman crew members have each made a pact to serve as undead beings aboard the cursed ship. Some are so encrusted with coral and barnacles that they have almost no human features left. This presents certain practical inconveniences; for instance, Mr. Hermit Crab has an unfortunate tendency to lose his head at inopportune moments.
5. When we first encounter the Black Pearl, only Gibbs (Kevin McNally) is on deck, chanting a song. Which of the following lines is NOT in this well-known pirate ditty?

Answer: Mainsail and jib set fair to sou'west

Gibbs is appropriately brandishing a bottle of rum as he sings, awaiting the return of the ship's captain from a mysterious mission. The song (from which the movie's title is taken) originally appeared in the book "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson. The next bit goes:
"The mate was fixed by the bosun's pike
The bosun brained with a marlinspike
And cookey's throat was marked belike
It had been gripped by fingers ten;
And there they lay, all good dead men
Like break o'day in a boozing ken".
6. In "Curse of the Black Pearl", we learned that Captain Jack Sparrow's compass doesn't point north, but in "Dead Man's Chest", we find out that it always points to what?

Answer: Your heart's desire

One of Sparrow's many problems in this film is that he's not sure what he wants most, so the compass won't give him a heading to follow. Is the compass trying to tell us that Sparrow is really the object of Elizabeth's affection? Only the third movie will tell us for sure!
7. Elizabeth Swann steals a "letter of marque". Its value is that it would turn Sparrow - or anyone whose name is filled out on it - into which of the following?

Answer: A privateer

A privateer is basically a pirate who makes an agreement with one government that they'll only attack ships belonging to enemy countries. (In "Master and Commander", the British ship is searching for French privateers.) Will receives the letter from the nasty Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) of the East India Trading Company, and he does his best to barter it for a certain valuable object in Sparrow's possession that Beckett wants to get his hands on.

However, it falls into the hands of Norrington (Jack Davenport), who wants to use it to redeem himself with the British Navy.
8. Where does the Black Pearl go to TRY and pick up the 99 extra crewmen to ransom Sparrow from the curse of Davy Jones?

Answer: Tortuga

Tortuga is an island group near Haiti, which explains why some of the minor characters there speak French. The name Tortuga means "turtle", and the islands really do have a piratical history. The crew of the Black Pearl have little trouble recruiting new shipmates on Tortuga, although they're a pretty shabby lot.
9. The fearsome Davy Jones keeps a tiny music box that seems to be a memento of his lost love. Its lid is decorated to resemble which of the following?

Answer: A silver heart

Jones listens to it when he mournfully retires (like the Phantom of the Opera) to play a pipe organ in a private room on board his ship. Very observant viewers might have noticed a very similar silver heart among the jewels on Tia Dalma's table. Could this be a suggestion that she has a closer relationship to Davy Jones than she lets on?
10. Which of the animals that play a part in the story is featured in the extra scene after the credits?

Answer: The dog

Originally introduced as the keeper of the prison keys at Port Royal, the dog makes his way at the beginning of the film to the cannibal island in a longboat with Pintel and Ragetti, but he doesn't make it off the island with the crew. After the credits, we see him on a throne, with a large bone in his mouth - probably "long pork"!
