"Pirates of the Caribbean": Dead Man's Quiz

Once again, our roguish, pirate hero made a flamboyant entrance. He had gone into an isolated prison to retrieve a drawing of a key. He escaped by getting into one of the coffins of the dead prisoners, which the guards threw into the sea. Then he shot the bird which was pecking his coffin, and used a limb of the dead prisoner (whom he shared the coffin with) as an oar and rowed back to the waiting Black Pearl.

Answer: Elizabeth Swann

In this scene the characters were on a deserted island, looking for the Dead Man's chest. Elizabeth was holding Jack's compass, which pointed to the desire of the holder's heart, to look for the chest. When she found out that the compass pointed to Jack himself, she was surprised.

She found out in a moment that the treasure was also in that direction, but which one was truly her heart's desire? Hmm....

Answer: William Turner Jr. / Will

In this movie, Will was tricked aboard Davy Jones' ship, the Flying Dutchman by Captain Jack Sparrow, because the latter had a debt to repay to Davy Jones. In this scene, he witnessed, ahem, Davy Jones' "marine life" play Liar's Dice, a game in which you have to bluff your opponents.

The interesting thing was that they bet with their years of servitude to Davy Jones, which inspired Will to trick Davy Jones.

Answer: Jack the Monkey

This was the scene where Jack had returned from the isolated prison and returned to the Black Pearl. Just then, monkey Jack stole his hat. Pirate Jack was furious, so he shot monkey Jack. Well, this scene might not be that memorable, but hey, this is trivia!

Answer: The Kraken

The Kraken (said crack-en) was a mythological creature that was known to attack ships. In this movie, it was controlled by Davy Jones. Its mission this time was to "hunt down anyone with the black spot", which was Jack Sparrow, the reason being an unrepaid debt by Jack to Davy.

In this scene, it was attempting to destroy the Black Pearl, and taking quite a lot of crew members with it. (Note: although the Kraken was portrayed as a giant octopus-like creature in the movie, it was described as a giant squid-like creature with a beak in myths. Scientists think that it is actually the Atlantic Giant Squid, which can grow up to a gigantic size.)

Answer: Former Commodore Norrington

This scene was part of the climax, which was on the island where Davy Jones had hid the Dead Man's Chest. "Marine life" were fighting with the former Commodore Norrington, Jack (the pirate, not the monkey), Elizabeth, Will and a few others. Norrington was rushing to the rowboat to put down the chest, but saw the dirt all over the rowboat.

He concluded that Jack had put the heart of Davy Jones in the jar of dirt and he took the heart for himself, then continued fighting.

Answer: Lord Beckett

This scene, which was one of the last, showed former Commodore Norrington giving the heart of Davy Jones to Cutler Beckett, head of the East India Company, in hope that he (Norrington) would be given back his former title and honour.

Answer: Davy Jones

This was the same scene as mentioned in question number three. Davy Jones kept the key to the Dead Man's Chest, which contained his still beating heart, under his tentacles. Will didn't intend to win that key by playing Liar's Dice; he only wanted to know where Davy Jones hid it.

Answer: Governor Weatherby Swann

This scene was a minor one, but I thought it would be amusing to add the Governor to this quiz. This scene was when he was handcuffed and brought to see Lord Beckett, without his wig; he did look quite disgraced too!

Answer: Former Captain Barbossa

This was the last scene of the movie, when the crew of the then-gone Black Pearl grieved for the loss of Captain Jack Sparrow. Tia Dalma asked them if they were willing to go to World's End to rescue Jack, to which they agreed. She then stated that they would need a captain who knew those seas.

This cued the entrance of former Captain Barbossa, with Jack the monkey on his shoulder (as usual), eating an apple (a reference to the last movie, when eating apples was something the undead crew couldn't enjoy, and was used as a running joke throughout the whole movie). Well, until the next "Pirates of the Carribean" movie, it's a pirate's life for me! Yohoho!
