Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" movie, Voldemort takes Lucius Malfoy's wand to defeat Harry Potter. While Lucius' wand is made of elm wood, what is the core of the wand?

Answer: dragon heartstring

Voldemort informs his followers at Malfoy Manor that he will require a wand from one of them. However, not a wizard or witch in the room readily volunteers to part with his or her wand. With no immediate volunteers, Lucius is reluctant, as the Dark Lord insists upon using his wand. Voldemort observes correctly that Lucius' wand is made of elm and Lucius confirms that dragon heartstring is the core. Throughout the Harry Potter books, dragon heartstring is common in wands.

Hermione Granger, Viktor Krum, Bellatrix Lestrange and Peter Pettigrew also have dragon heartstring as the core of their wands.
2. Several of the Weasleys help move Harry Potter from Privet Drive by impersonating him. Which of the following statements correctly matches each protector to his or her "Weasley" Harry Potter look-alike?

Answer: Arthur protects Fred, Remus protects George and Nymphadora protects Ron.

Fred, George and Ronald Weasley are all Harry Potter decoys. While Remus Lupin protects George and his wife Nymphadora Tonks protects Ron, Arthur Weasley protects his son Fred. Over half the Weasley clan risks their lives on this mission, to prevent Lord Voldemort from easily capturing or killing the real Harry Potter. Bill Weasley and his fiancée Fleur also take part in moving Harry to the safe house. Bill protects Fleur as she too is a Harry Potter double.
3. In the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1", Harry tries to run from his responsibilities when he decides to sneak away from the Burrow in the middle of the night. True or False?

Answer: False

While Harry does try to run away, he isn't running from his responsibilities. He is running because he is worried about the danger he is putting everyone else in. Just as Harry protested when Mad-eye Moody revealed the plan to use decoys to safely move Harry from Privet Drive, Harry is once again trying to prevent others from getting hurt in order to keep him safe.
4. While hiding out at Grimmauld Place, a famous real-world Beethoven tune called "Für Elise" is played on the piano. Which of the following statements is true about the composition?

Answer: Hermione is teaching Ron to play this tune.

Hermione is trying to teach Ron to play "Für Elise", a romantic piano solo by German composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Known formally as Bagatelle No. 25 in A Minor, "Für Elise" ("For Elise" in English) was discovered almost half a century after Beethoven died. There is a general belief that the piece was written for someone Beethoven was fond of. The composition adds a bit of romance to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1". With Hermione teaching "Für Elise" to Ron, it is quite symbolic of the growing affection the two share.
5. In the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1", which spell does Hermione (as Mafalda Hopkirk) tell Ron to use to stop the rain in Yaxley's office?

Answer: Finite Incantatem

Harry, Hermione and Ron disguise themselves as Ministry of Magic workers in order to locate the Slytherin locket. While they are on an elevator in the ministry, Yaxley delays the elevator to tell Reginald Cattermole (Ron in disguise) to stop the rain showers that had been falling for the past two days in his office. Once Yaxley leaves, Ron exits the elevator, unsure of how to stop the rain.

Hermione suggests that Ron use the Finite Incantatem spell, which cancels all previous spells. In the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" book, it is actually Arthur Weasley who suggests that Ron use the Meteolojinx Recanto charm to stop the rain in Yaxley's office.
6. What is Dolores Umbridge's official title in the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1"?

Answer: Head of Muggle-Born Registration

In the movie "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", Dolores Umbridge was both the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher and the High Inquisitor of Hogwarts, after serving as Cornelius Fudge's undersecretary. When the Ministry of Magic is infiltrated by the Dark Forces in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1", Umbridge is assigned as the Head of Muggle-Born Registration Commmission.

While Umbridge is in the Ministry of Magic courtroom, attempting to strip Mary Elizabeth Cattermole of her witch status, Harry Potter (as Albert Runcorn) secretly searches her office for the Slytherin locket horcrux. Umbridge's title is seen on the door before Harry enters the room.
7. Which of the following spells is NOT verbally used by either Harry or Hermione to secure their campsites as they are running from the Dark Forces?

Answer: Protego Nihilum

Hermione uses the Protego Totalum charm to provide full protection from being discovered. Both Harry and Hermione use the Salvio Hexium charm to protect against spells being cast and the Repello Muggletum charm to protect against being seen by Muggles. Were Protego Nihilum a true spell it would be quite useless because 'nihil' is Latin for nothing.
8. When trying to destroy the Slytherin locket horcrux with his wand, which spell is NOT verbally used by Harry in the woods in the "Deathly Hallows: Part 1" movie?

Answer: Incendio

While in the woods, Harry and Hermione take turns trying to destroy the Slytherin locket horcrux using their wands. Harry uses four different spells: Dissendium to try to force it open; Expulso to try to blow the locket into pieces; Reducto to try to blast it open and Diffindo to try to slice it open.

However, it is Hermione who uses the Incendio spell to try to melt or burn the locket. Harry then becomes frustrated that they cannot destroy the locket and begins zapping it with his wand. The protections on the Slytherin locket prevent any of these spells from working. Harry and Ron finally work together to destroy the locket. Harry opens the locket by speaking Parseltongue and Ron eventually uses the Sword of Gryffindor to destroy it once and for all.
9. In the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1", what words are revealed by the golden snitch, after Harry touches it to his lips?

Answer: I open at the close.

When Dumbledore dies he leaves Ron a deluminator, Hermione "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" book and Harry the golden snitch that he caught during his first Quidditch match in his will. When Harry touches the snitch to his lips, the words "I open at the close" appear on the snitch. While Ron and Hermione both have opportunities to use their gifts, the importance of the snitch and its message remain a mystery. It is sure to be revealed in the second instalment of the "Deathly Hallows" movie.
10. While visiting Godric's Hollow, in the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1", Hermione creates a wreath above words inscribed on the gravestone of Lily and James Potter. Which words are missing from the Potters' epitaph: "The last _____________that should be destroyed is ________________"?

Answer: enemy, death

The visit to Godric's Hollow is crucial for Harry. Seeing the grave of Lily and James Potter serves as concrete proof that his parents are dead and gives Harry a bit of closure. The inscription on the tombstone reads, "The last enemy that should be destroyed is death." This is a direct passage from the "Authorized King James Version" of the Christian "Bible".

It is taken from "1 Corinthians" (Chapter 15, Verse 26). Death is seen as an enemy of life, especially when it comes to James and Lily Potter. By destroying death, life has greater value!
11. What causes Hermione to suspect that something is strange about Bathilda Bagshot while in Godric's Hollow?

Answer: She sees flies in one of the rooms and bloodstains on the ceiling.

Harry and Hermione follow who they believe to be Bathilda Bagshot to her house in Godric's Hollow. Harry goes upstairs with Bathilda and Hermione explores downstairs. While Hermione does see a photo of Gellert Grindelwald, she does not yet know who the young man in the photograph is.

Hermione also has no idea that Bathilda is speaking Parseltongue to Harry or that Bathilda is really Nagini because she is downstairs when these things happen. After finding a room with flies and fresh blood stains on the ceiling, Hermione goes upstairs to warn Harry.

The two fight off Nagini, barely escaping by disapparating.
12. In the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1", which of the following things happens BEFORE Harry sees the Sword of Gryffindor?

Answer: He follows a floating Patronus glow to the middle of the lake.

Several things happen before Harry sees the Sword of Gryffindor. Harry follows a silvery doe Patronus. Next, the doe becomes a ball of light hovering above the iced over lake. Harry then walks carefully to the spot where the ball of light hovers and uses his hand to wipe the frost away. Finally, Harry sees the Sword of Gryffindor at the bottom of the lake.
13. When Harry is swimming beneath the icy lake, he is wearing three things. In addition to his underwear, what else is Harry wearing in the movie?

Answer: A locket and glasses

Just before submerging into the water and while swimming in the water, Harry is wearing a pair of undershorts, the Slytherin locket and his glasses. Harry does put his glasses back on after he is out of the water, but it is likely they fell off when Ron pulled him from the water. Or it could be a continuity error. Regardless, Harry's determination to retrieve the Sword of Gryffindor clearly must outweigh the dangers of taking off his clothing and getting into ice cold water.

It's also good to keep in mind that the locket alters the wearer's sense of reality. Lucky for Harry Ron arrives just in time to rescue him!
14. In the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1", which of the following is *NOT* true about how Ron found his way back to Harry and Hermione?

Answer: He heard Harry and Hermione discussing where they were going, using the deluminator.

While all the other things did happen, Ron did not hear Harry and Hermione discussing their whereabouts using the deluminator. Ron explains that the deluminator allowed him to hear Hermione whisper his name before sending a ball of light into his chest, directly over his heart.

He tells Harry and Hermione that after the light entered his body he simply "knew" that it would guide him back to them. It leads Ron to the hillside near the lake, where he ultimately rescues Harry before they both return to the tent campsite.
15. During one of his Legilimency connections with Voldemort, Harry sees Voldemort searching for something that was taken from a wandmaker. What was Voldemort searching for AND who stole it from the wandmaker in the movie?

Answer: The Elder Wand, Grindelwald

Voldemort searches for the Elder Wand which Gellert Grindelwald stole from Gregorovitch the wandmaker. Harry sees these things in his mind's eye when he is connected to Lord Voldemort through Legilimency. He is able to make sense of it over time, but not in enough time to get to the Elder Wand before Voldemort does. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" ends with Voldemort obtaining the powerful Elder Wand from Dumbledore's grave.
