Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of Romulan ship does Nero captain?

Answer: a mining ship

When explaining why he is attacking Vulcan, Nero explains that he is captain of the Narada, once a peaceful mining ship. He was on the ship when his home planet blew up. His ship was sucked into the resultant black hole and taken back in time. He is attempting to rewrite history, while seeking retribution on those people he holds responsible for the destruction of his planet.

The fact that it is a mining ship explains why it has the massive drill, which is used to drill towards Vulcan's core. Kirk and Sulu are able to disable the drill, but the damage is done and the Romulans are able to destroy up Vulcan. Nero is played by Eric Bana.
2. After drilling the hole into the surface of Vulcan, how do the Romulans destroy the planet?

Answer: with red matter

Although never actually defined as such, red matter seems to be equivalent to anti-matter, as it appears to be kept suspended inside the container and, when launched into Vulcan's core, creates an explosion large enough to create a black hole. Even though Kirk and Sulu are able to disable the drill before it reaches the planet's core, the hole is deep enough and Vulcan is destroyed.
3. Nero seeks information about Federation defences and communications from a captive Pike, but he refuses to give it up. What persuasion technique does Nero use on Pike?

Answer: a Centurian slug

Nero demands that Captain Pike beam over to his ship. Before he goes, Pike appoints Spock as acting Captain of the Enterprise. Once there, Pike refuses to give Nero the information he wants, so Nero inserts a Centurian slug in his mouth. It's not clear whether this slug will force Pike to talk through the pain it inflicts, or simply by controlling Pike's mind. Whatever the case, Nero clearly expects Pike to give up the information, once the slug is inside his body.
Captain Pike is played by Bruce Greenwood.
4. Who does Spock expel from the ship and maroon on Delta Vega?

Answer: Kirk

After the destruction of Vulcan, Spock orders the Enterprise to rejoin Starfleet. Kirk is adamant that they should pursue the Romulans, before they can destroy their next target. Kirk is so argumentative that Spock has him ejected from the ship in a shuttle that takes him to the snowy surface of Delta Vega.
Kirk is played by Chris Pine and Spock is played by Zachary Quinto.
5. After Vulcan, what planet is Nero's next target?

Answer: Earth

Driven by rage and the need for revenge, Nero seeks to wipe out all planets that are part of the Federation. Vulcan is chosen as his first target, because he holds Spock responsible for the destruction of his planet (in the future). With Vulcan destroyed, Nero turns his ship towards his next target, a destination that is figured out by the crew of the Enterprise, based on the trajectory of the Narada.
6. Who tells Kirk that he and Spock will become lifelong friends?

Answer: Spock

Marooned on the cold and inhospitable surface of Delta Vega, Kirk finds himself being pursued by the local fauna. He is rescued by a Vulcan, who Kirk is surprised to find, knows him by name. When questioned about this, the mysterious Vulcan replies "I have been and always shall be your friend." The stranger turns out to be an elderly version of Spock, who was sent back in time after being sucked into the black hole created by the implosion of Romulus.
The elder Spock is played by Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock on the original television series.
7. Whom does Kirk meet at the Federation outpost on Delta Vega?

Answer: Montgomery Scott

After using the Vulcan mind meld to help Kirk understand what has to happen, Spock the elder and Kirk the younger make their way through the inclement weather to the Federation outpost. Manning this isolated station is engineer Montgomery Scott, who is somewhat of a whiz with transporter technology, but who has been given the lousy assignment after offending his teacher. His interest in greeting the newcomers is largely driven by his hunger.
Spock transports both Kirk and Scott on board the Enterprise while it is travelling at warp speed, a feat thought to be impossible.
Montgomery Scott is played by Simon Pegg.
8. Do the two Spocks ever meet?

Answer: Yes

Spock the younger sees the retreating back of Spock the elder, and calls out to him, thinking him to be his father. During their discussion, Spock the younger questions Spock the elder about why he had manipulated Kirk the way he had (leading him to believe that the two could never meet, or else there would be dire consequences). Spock the elder explained that it was because it was necessary for Kirk and Spock (the younger) to realize how much they could learn from each other.

He also persuades Spock not to leave the Federation.
9. Early in the movie, Spock asks his father why he married his mother, a human. Near the end of the movie, his father volunteers the real reason for the marriage. What was it?

Answer: because he loved her

While Spock is being tormented for being of mixed heritage, he questions his father about the marriage. His father answers that given the fact he was ambassador to Earth, it was a logical choice. Near the end of the film, after the Romulan threat has been negated, Sarek reminds Spock of the question asked those many years before. He then tells Spock that he truly loved her. This realization helps Spock make his decision to stay on the Enterprise, instead of resigning to help rebuild the Vulcan culture.
Sarek is played by Ben Cross.
10. Who says the famous line that begins, "Space, the final frontier."?

Answer: Spock

The opening lines from the original television series have been subtly changed for the closing line of the movie to; "Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Her ongoing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life-forms and new civilizations; to boldly go where no one has gone before."
The line that, when spoken by Captain Kirk, opened every episode of the original series, mentioned a 'five year mission' and contained the politically incorrect words "...where no man has gone before."
Spock, as first officer, speaks the lines in the film.
