Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Have you checked the children lately?" was what the caller on the phone said to Jill in what 1979 film?

Answer: When a Stranger Calls

Jill was hired to watch the children of Dr. and Mrs. Mandrakis for the evening. As soon as the parents left, Jill received several phone calls asking if she had checked on the children. Jill had not because Mrs. Mandrakis informed her they were both just getting over colds. Mrs. Mandrakis told Jill not to disturb them because she just got them to sleep. The calls continued to come in and caused Jill to become more frightened. She called the police and they told her to keep the caller on the phone as long as she could. Jill engaged the caller in conversation long enough to get a trace on the phone. The police called back and told her the call was coming from inside the home. Jill managed to escape with her life, but the children were not so lucky. They had been dead for several hours according to the police.

Carol Kane starred in this 1979 film as Jill Johnson. Carol Kane has a number of acting credits under her belt. Her best known role is probably that of Simka Dahblitz on the television program "Taxi". "When a Stranger Calls" was remade and released in theaters in 2006. I prefer the original as is the case for the majority of horror movies remakes.
2. What was unique about the phone used in the original "A Nightmare on Elm Street"?

Answer: The phone had a mouth and tongue.

Nancy received a phone call from Freddy. Freddy told Nancy that he was her boyfriend now. The mouthpiece of the phone then turned into a mouth on the end of it. The phone tried to kiss Nancy as Freddy spoke. Nancy was severely frightened by the phone. She pulled the cord of the phone out of the wall. She then realized it was her only way of talking to her boyfriend, Glen. She had warned Glen not to fall asleep or he would die, but Glen did not heed Nancy's warning and fell asleep. He was butchered in his sleep, and was the last of Nancy's friends to die. Nancy set her sights on avenging the deaths of her friends.

The film was originally released to great success in 1984. It was remade in 2010 but the remake was not as successful as the original. Both of the films still revolved around Freddy Krueger. Robert Englund, who played the original Freddy throughout the franchise, was a more appealing character. Jackie Earle Haley played the updated version. Nancy was played by Heather Langenkamp.
3. The phone lines were down due to a winter storm. What was the other form of communication the Torrances had available to them early on in the film "The Shining"?

Answer: Radio

Jack had agreed to be the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel for the winter. Wendy, his wife, and Danny, his son, both came along with Jack for the winter. During a tour of the hotel, Wendy and Jack were both shown how to use the phones and the radio. Jack slowly slipped into madness due to the isolation from the outside world. Wendy tried to make a phone call, but realized the lines were down. She used the radio to call the local Forest Ranger. He advised Wendy to leave the radio on all the time now. Jack had been given instructions to kill his wife and son. He removed several parts from the radio so it was inoperable. Wendy and Danny managed to escape the hotel before Jack was able to murder them.

Stanley Kubrick wrote the screenplay and directed "The Shining". It was based upon a book by Stephen King. The Torrances seemed like an everyday well-adjusted family. Jack decided to take the caretaker job so he could outline his new writing project. The family seemed to adjust well at first, but Jack started to slip into madness after only a few short weeks. Wendy did her best to keep Jack and Danny happy, but ultimately she failed. This movie has been one of my go to movies for the longest times. The sense of isolation and the hotel become viable characters in their own right.
4. Laurie was convinced someone was following her. Laurie went to her bedroom window and saw a man staring up at her. Suddenly the phone rang. What was the person on the other end of the phone doing in the original "Halloween"?

Answer: chewing

Laurie asked several times who was on the phone. The person did not reply and only kept chewing. Laurie hung up the phone; she was frightened by the call. The phone rang again and it was her friend, Annie, on the other end of the phone. Laurie told her she thought it was an obscene phone call. Annie joked with Laurie about how her chewing sounded obscene. Annie told Laurie she would pick her and take her to her babysitting job.

"Halloween" was a sleeper hit; it did not catch on right away. It became a success through mostly word of mouth. The film was written by Debra Hill and John Carpenter. John also composed the music and directed the feature. It was considered the most successful independent film for a long time. The film starred Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode and Nancy Kyes as Annie Brackett. The film was originally released in 1978. Unlike most remakes I have seen, I did enjoy Rob Zombie's version of the film as well.
5. In the film "Scream 4", who was on the phone with the killer as Olivia was being murdered?

Answer: Jill and Kirby

The killer called while Jill and Kirby were watching "Shaun of the Dead". The number on Jill's phone showed up as Trevor's, Jill's ex-boyfriend. The two realized it was the killer. As they looked out Jill's window, they saw Olivia being attacked. Sidney rushed in the room and saw what was going on. She did not make it to Olivia in time. Olivia's death was the beginning of a series of deaths in the film. It turned out that Jill and Charlie were the killers in the film. Jill was the cousin of Sidney and was jealous of the fame Sidney had acquired. Both Charlie and Jill planned to make themselves famous by being the sole survivors of the attack by Ghostface. Jill, however, did not want to share the fame and killed Charlie. Jill even threw herself into a table to make it seemed like she had been attacked.

Jill was played by Emma Roberts. She did an excellent job in my opinion playing a psycho. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette all reprised their role from the first three films.
6. In retrospect, I am sure Casey wished she never picked up the phone. In what film do we hear the line "What is your favorite scary movie?" uttered?

Answer: Scream

Casey was getting ready to watch a video. She was in her living room as the phone rang. The caller identified himself as a wrong number. Casey hung up the phone. A few seconds later, the caller called Casey again. He said he wanted to speak with Casey. She politely got off the phone with him again. Casey went into the kitchen and put some popcorn on the stove. The caller called back and Casey told him she was going to watch a movie. The phone conversation slowly went into a negative direction. The caller called back and told Casey if she hung up on him again he would kill her.

Drew Barrymore played the role of Casey Becker. She managed to get a few hits in on the killer before she died. "Scream" was released in 1996 and was a big success.
7. Alice and her friend broke into the office of the camp. They desperately wanted to use the phone to call for help. Alice and her friend were both dismayed to find the phone did not work. Who was the friend with Alice in the original "Friday the 13th"?

Answer: Bill

Bill and Alice were the lasting surviving counselors of Camp Crystal Lake. They were of course not aware that they were the last ones left alive. Bill and Alice searched the grounds of the camp for any of the other counselors. They broke into the office of the camp only to find the phone was not working. Alice fell asleep when they returned to the camp's common room. She would later go out to find Bill dead. He was killed with arrows to his body and head.

Bill was played by Harry Crosby, the son of the late great Bing Crosby. Bill was born in 1958. Adrienne played the role of Alice in the film. The director kept Bill's death a secret from Adrienne King so that her surprised reaction would be genuine. "Friday the 13th", was released in 1980. It has long been one of my all-time favorite horror films.
8. In what film sequel was the survivor of the previous film smart enough to get caller I.D.?

Answer: Scream 2

Sidney had survived the attack from Stu and Billy in the first film. In the second film, Sidney and Randy had left Woodsboro to attend college. Sidney was woken up by the ringing of the telephone. She heard the all too familiar phrase, "What is your favorite scary movie?". She asked who was calling and then looked at her caller I.D. She identified the person on the other line and tried to keep him talking. She was timing the call in order to establish a trace on the call. The caller hung up when Sidney informed him he was breaking the law with his prank call.

"Scream 2" was released in 1997. It was released one year after the original, but the story took place two years later. The film was a success just like the first. Neve Campbell and Jamie Kennedy reprised their roles of Sidney and Randy from the original films. Randy unfortunately died in this film.
9. In the first sequel to the original "A Nightmare on Elm Street", Lisa thought Jesse was so cute. What was Lisa doing when Jesse called on the phone?

Answer: Lisa was swimming in her pool.

Lisa's mom walked down to the swimming pool. She told Lisa that Jesse was on the phone waiting to speak to her. Jesse had asked Lisa to go out with him. Jesse was leaving his house when his father stopped him. His dad had been asking Jesse to clear the boxes out of his room. The Walshes had moved into their new home. Jesse told his dad he would not be gone long. Ken made his son go back upstairs to finish unpacking his room. Lisa arrived a short time later to help Jesse finish unpacking. While she was putting sweaters away, Lisa found the diary of the previous owner. The diary belonged to Nancy Thompson. Both Lisa and Jesse read from Nancy's diary, which quickly went from funny to dark. Nancy described in her diary how Freddy was trying to kill her.

Lisa was played by Kim Myers in this 1985 sequel to the original film. It was not as successful as the first film. There were a lot of reasons that the film was not as good as the first. The first was because it had a male hero not a female heroine. It was also not directed by Wes Craven. I did enjoy the film, however. Jesse Walsh was played by Mark Patton.
10. The phone rang and rang, but it was too late. Michael had already been to Laurie's home and murdered her parents. Who was trying to contact Laurie's parents on the phone in the 2007 remake of "Halloween"?

Answer: Sheriff Brackett

Dr. Loomis had been speaking to Sheriff Lee Brackett with regard to the escape of Michael. Lee revealed to Loomis that Mason and Cynthia Strode had adopted Laurie. Lee tried to call the Strodes and warn them that Michael might come to their home. As the phone rang in the house, we saw the dead bodies of Mason and Cynthia. Michael eventually found Laurie as she was babysitting Tommy and Lindsey. Michael took Laurie to their childhood home. He tried to make Laurie understand he was her brother. Michael showed Laurie a picture of them as children. Laurie did not understand and attacked Michael as his head was down.

"Halloween" was released in 2007. The original film was released in 1978. Sheriff Brackett was played by Brad Douriff in the 2007 version. I really don't look at this film as a remake. I view it more as an extension of the original. It showed the reasons Michael performed the crimes he did. I have to say I enjoyed it as much as the original film.
