Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the Beatles' first number 1 single in the UK? (Note: since there were multiple charts at the time, this question refers to the single cited by the Beatles and George Martin as their first number 1 in the series of interviews quoted in the Beatles Anthology)

Answer: Please Please Me

The second UK single released by the band reached the top spot on the UK singles chart compiled by the New Musical Express on 22 February 1963.
2. A vinyl record single with 2 hits is commonly referred to as 'Double-A side'. What was the first Double-A side single released by the Beatles?

Answer: We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper

Other Double-A side singles by the Beatles were Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby; Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane; Come Together/Something.
3. In 1968 the Beatles released three distinct songs with what word in the title? Note: different arrangements of the same lyrics count here as distinct songs.

Answer: Revolution

The White Album featured the song 'Revolution 1', which apart from being slower and in a different key to 'Revolution' (the single), included a small but interesting addition to the lyrics: "But when you talk about destruction don't you know that you can count me out (in)".

And 'Revolution 9'...every Beatles fan has an opinion on this one.
4. The 'White Album' included four songs written by George Harrison. Which of the following was not a Harrison composition?

Answer: Don't Pass Me By

George Harrison also wrote 'Piggies', notoriously referenced in the Manson family murders.

'Don't Pass Me By' was Ringo Starr's first complete Beatles composition.
5. Many people have been called 'the Fifth Beatle' at one time or another. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: Elvis Presley

Stuart Sutcliffe (bass) and Pete Best (drums) were regular members of the band in its early Hamburg days and are both frequently referred to as "the fifth Beatle" (not sure how that works since they were in the band at the same time, both before Ringo...hmmm)

George Harrison has stated that there were two 'fifth Beatles': Derek Taylor, the band's media liaison/press officer; and Neil Aspinall, the band's road manager and later personal assistant.

Adding to the confusion, Paul McCartney told the BBC that "if anyone was the fifth Beatle, it was Brian Epstein", the band's manager.

I would like to help clear things up a little by putting on record that I am not, nor ever have been, the fifth Beatle (sadly).
6. Six days of the week are mentioned in 'Lady Madonna'. Which day was given a rest?

Answer: Saturday

'Lady Madonna' was the last Beatles single to be released on the Parlophone label in the UK (and the last Capitol Records single in the US). Paul McCartney explained the song as his attempt to do a 'bluesy boogie-woogie' Fats Domino impression.
7. Seven years and seven months separate which of the following pairs of events in the history of the Beatles?

Answer: Release of the first single in the UK and last single in the USA (excluding post-break up recordings)

The first single, 'Love Me Do', was released on 5 October 1962. The last single, 'The Long and Winding Road', came out on 11 May 1970. These dates bookend 12 studio albums (as released in the UK), 5 motion pictures, 4 overseas tours and over 200 original songs.
8. What was the working title of the film 'Help!'?

Answer: Eight Arms to Hold You

'Help!' was directed by Richard Lester, who also directed the Beatles film 'A Hard Day's Night' and 'Superman II'.
9. What was the source of the sound loop "Number 9, number 9, number 9" on Revolution 9?

Answer: A test tape found in the Abbey Road studio

John Lennon explains:

"I was born on 9th October. I lived at 9 Newcastle Road. Nine seems to be my number so I've stuck with it, and it's the highest number in the universe; after that you go back to one."
10. Complete the verse of the Beatles song 'All Together Now': "1, 2, 3, 4, can I have a little more? 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10..."

Answer: I love you

'All Together Now', released on the 'Yellow Submarine' soundtrack, was described by Paul McCartney as being in the style of a children's sing-along, with the title having a dual meaning of peace and universal brotherhood.

It's also the title of a documentary about the making of 'Love', the collaboration between the Beatles and Cirque du Soleil.
