Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Beatles have a lot of songs still played on the radio, decades after their demise as a band. One such song features an expletive buried in the mix, but still clearly audible and can be heard on the radio. What's the song?

Answer: Hey Jude

Paul wrote "Hey Jude" for John's son Julian, while John and his wife were getting a divorce. John can be heard, if you listen closely, to say "Got the wrong chord" seconds before. Then, around the 2:58 mark, Paul yells the "expletive" due to the bad chord.

John Lennon said "'Paul hit a clunker on the piano and said a naughty word, but I insisted we leave it in, buried just low enough so that it can barely be heard. Most people won't ever spot it...but we'll know it's there."
2. During the mastering of one of their songs, one of the sound engineers brought up a track too early in the final mix. The song features Lennon singing a line twice, but the first time he sang the line was supposed to be left out, with guitar in its place. Due to a mistake by the engineer, the very last word of the line, "down", is clearly heard in the final master. What's the song?

Answer: Happiness is a Warm Gun

The line is "I need a fix cause I'm going down" on "Happiness is a Warm Gun" from "The While Album". The mistake occurs at :57 in the recording. The word "down" fades in out of nowhere.

Don't know if this is good enough, but most of the information came from http://wgo.signal11.org.uk/wgo.htm. Some of the more well known questions are from all over the Internet. There's a book by Mark Lewisohn as well called "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions" which has this information as well.
3. What Beatles song do some fans claim feature Morse Code?

Answer: Strawberry Fields Forever

Immediately after Lennon sings "Let me take you down 'cause I'm going to . . .", you can hear a series of beeps. Speculation is that the beeps spell "J" and "L", Lennon's initials. The beeps begin at :15 and end around :20. The official explanation is that those beeps are actually someone typing in commands for the Mellotron machine.

The Beatles did not have a flute player on this recording, and so used a Mellotron machine to play the flute. A Mellotron requires you to type in commands, which is what the beeps are.
4. What Beatles song features the very heavily reverbed line "Roll over boys", or, alternately, "Roll over Maurice"?

Answer: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

At the :09-:10 mark in the recording, you can hear a shout that sounds like "Roll Over Maurice" or "Roll Over Boys". Some listeners have interpreted the line to be German, with the actual phrase being "Zieh die Hose aus," which means "Take off your trousers".

Other listeners think the line is actually French and is "y a du monde en haut", which means "There are people upstairs", another possible "clue" in the "Paul is Dead" hoax.
5. What song features a backward guitar solo?

Answer: I'm Only Sleeping

The band decided to have a backward guitar solo on the song after the tape operator loaded the tape incorrectly. At 1:57, a barely audible voice says "Yawn Paul". At 2:01, Pawn audibly yawns.
6. The Beatles were famous for editing their music together using different takes. The most famous example is "Strawberry Fields Forever". However, ever early in their career they edited another song. The problem with this edit is it's not timed right, causing the last word of the chorus, "there", to become "there-ere". What's the song?

Answer: I Saw Her Standing There

The mistake occurs at 1:32 in the recording. Whoever did the edit, probably George Martin, did not match "there" up correctly, causing the flub. At 1:29, there is another mistake, with John singing "When I saw her standing there" and Pal singing "Sin' I saw her standing there".

The famous "1,2,3,4" intro is also from a different take that Martin tacked onto this recording.
7. At the end on one of the "Let It Be" songs, Lennon says "Thank you, brothers. Me hands getting er... too cold to play the chords". The line is not original to the recording but is actually from the rooftop performance. What song from "Let It Be" had this line dubbed in from the rooftop performance?

Answer: Dig a Pony

The original intent of "Get Back", which transformed into "Let It Be", was for The Beatles to return to live playing and touring. "I've Got a Feeling", "One After 909, and "Dig a Pony" all came from the rooftop performance. "Two of Us", "Dig It", and "Maggie Mae" were also live recordings.
8. Donovan contributed what line to "Yellow Submarine"?

Answer: Sky of blue and sea of green

Both Lennon and Donovan helped Paul with the lyrics, though Donovan did not get a song writing credit. Paul wrote the song as a children's song for Ringo to sing while at Jane Asher's parents' house.

Here is a quote by John Lennon regarding the song: "'Yellow Submarine' is Paul's baby. Donovan helped with the lyrics. I helped with the lyrics too. We virtually made the track come alive in the studio, but based on Paul's inspiration. Paul's idea. Paul's title... written for Ringo."

9. During one of the songs for "The White Album", the last section from the song is instrumental. This last section was spliced from a different take, and also features bleedover from the guide vocals on this second take. What's the song?

Answer: Yer Blues

The last instrumental section, according to Mark Lewisohn who wrote the book "The Beatles Recording Sessions", was from a different take of the track. Listening to the song, the edit is rather jarring, as the band really didn't mesh the two takes together and this second take appears out of nowhere. According to Lewisohn, the vocals you do hear during this section were bleedover guide vocals that the drum mikes picked up.
10. In one song off "Beatles for Sale", John sings late, leaving Paul to sing the first two words. Previously when the same line appeared in the same song, both Paul and John sang. The error occurs at 1:04 in the recording. What's the song?

Answer: I Don't Want To Spoil the Party

John misses his cue when Paul starts singing "I don't want to spoil the party". He also makes a flub at 2:15 with an extra "If I", which does not go anywhere.

Most of the information came from http://wgo.signal11.org.uk/wgo.htm ("What Goes On - A Beatles Anomaly List"). Some of the more well known questions are from all over the Internet. There's a book by Mark Lewisohn as well called "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions" which has this information as well, and is the definitive guide to The Beatles' recording sessions.
