Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Thank you, Ivan Vaughan! Without "good ol' Ivy", the Beatles probably never would have happened. He will forever go down in history as the person who introduced John Lennon and Paul McCartney. But do you know the part his wife played in the band's lore?

Answer: She helped Paul McCartney write the song "Michelle".

Jan Vaughan was a languages teacher whom Paul asked to help add some French words to the Grammy-winning song. She added the "ma belle" part, as well finding a rhyme for "These are words that go together well."
2. The lads met many interesting people during their stays in Hamburg in the early 1960s. Who was Horst Fascher?

Answer: A bouncer who protected them

A former boxer who had served time for killing a man in a street fight, Fascher worked as a bouncer and took a shine to the English rock 'n' rollers-- especially the loudmouthed young John Lennon. "I could see that if I didn't watch out for them, John would get them into big trouble," Fascher recollected.
3. Any serious Beatles fan knows who Aunt Mimi is. John's maternal aunt, she raised him as his unofficial guardian from the age of five. Who was she married to?

Answer: George Toogood Smith

John was very close to his Uncle George, who taught him to read, draw, and paint. Smith's sudden death in 1955 was the first in a series of devastating losses for the 14 year-old Lennon. Within the subsequent 12 years, he would also lose his mother; his friend and bandmate, Stu Sutcliffe, and friend and manager Brian Epstein.
4. Which one of the following was never a member of The Quarrymen?

Answer: Chas Newby

Newby temporarily replaced Stuart Sutcliffe on bass when The Beatles returned from their first trip to Hamburg in December 1960, but he had never been a member of The Quarrymen. Soon after Newby's decision to return to university rather than stay on with the band, Paul McCartney became the permanent bassist.
5. This general manager of Apple Corps was once Brian Epstein's personal assistant and accompanied the future Beatles manager on his first visit to The Cavern in 1961 to check out the band.

Answer: Alistair Taylor

Prior to a 1995 interview with Taylor, the official Beatles legend was that a young man named Raymond Jones came to Epstein's music store in Liverpool asking for the single "My Bonnie" by The Beat Brothers (The Beatles). This event supposedly prompted Epstein to check out the band during their residency at The Cavern.

However, the story has now been put into question, since Taylor has stated: "I thought that we were losing sales and I wrote an order in the book under the name Raymond Jones and, from that moment the legend grew."
6. Who was the audio engineer who quit in the middle of the recording of "The White Album"?

Answer: Geoff Emerick

Disgusted with the constant arguing among the members of the band and with what he perceived as a lack of respect for producer George Martin, Emerick told Martin, "Look, I've had enough" and quit while they were laying down the vocal tracks for Lennon's "Cry Baby Cry". Emerick returned, however, for the recording of The Beatles' final album, "Abbey Road".
7. What was the name of the impresario who, in 1960, sent The Beatles (who temporarily changed their name to The Silver Beetles) on a tour of Scotland with Johnny Gentle?

Answer: Larry Parnes

Parnes promoted a so-called "stable" of young male singers, whom he dubbed with colorful stage names like Billy Fury, Marty Wilde, and Georgie Fame. The Scottish tour was not very successful; however, later that year the boys landed their first Hamburg gig, which prepared them for their path to stardom.
8. Which one of John's friends was staying with him at Kenwood on the legendary night that he invited Yoko Ono over for the first time and they recorded the "Two Virgins" album?

Answer: Pete Shotton

Kenwood was the home outside of London that John shared with his first wife, Cynthia, who was on holiday in Greece at the time of the incident. Pete was John's childhood friend and a fellow member of his Liverpool juvenile gang, the Outlaws. As boys, the two were thick as thieves and developed quite a reputation for mischief at Quarry Bank Grammar School, where they became known as "Shennon and Lotton".
9. Who wrote the newspaper article, "How Does a Beatle Live? John Lennon Lives Like This"?

Answer: Maureen Cleave

The article, printed in the London Evening Standard on 4th March 1966, contained Lennon's fateful quote: "We're more popular than Jesus now." His words spawned intense controversy and even death threats throughout mostly the southern United States, marring the band's upcoming American tour.
10. The inspiration of the quiz: What instrument did Ivan Vaughan play in The Quarrymen?

Answer: bass

Vaughan briefly shared the role of tea-chest bass player with two others, but he soon quit the group to focus on his studies. Luckily, he remained a supporter of The Quarrymen, inviting his schoolmate Paul McCartney to watch them perform at the St. Peter's Church fete in Woolton on that legendary Saturday afternoon, 6th July 1957.
