Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character was told by Paul McCartney to "take a sad song and make it better"?

Answer: Jude

The song is, of course, "Hey Jude," which was written by Paul and dedicated to John Lennon's son Julian after John's divorce from Julian's mother Cynthia. He initially thought of calling it "Hey Jules" but chose Jude instead because he thought it sounded better. "Hey Jude" is one of The Beatles' most popular songs and is considered one of the best songs ever made.
2. Who was the character who "thought she was a woman, but she was another man"?

Answer: Loretta Martin

From the song "Get Back," written mostly by Paul McCartney. Loretta Martin is apparently a sexually ambiguous person that needs to "get back to where (he/she) once belonged".
3. Who is the poor character who is "as blind as he can be, just sees what he wants to see"?

Answer: Nowhere Man

The song "Nowhere Man" was written by John Lennon in 1965, and Lennon claims the song is about him, during a time when he's "going nowhere" in trying to come up with a song.
4. Who is the seemingly jolly fellow who "takes a trolley to the jeweller's store, (and) buys a twenty-carat golden ring"?

Answer: Desmond Jones

Desmond is the main character in the song "Obla-di, Obla-da". He sees a lovely singer named Molly, buys her the aforementioned golden ring, and "in a couple of years they have built a home, sweet home" and "lived happy ever after in the market place". Now that's one happy song.
5. Which character is "darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there"?

Answer: Father Mackenzie

I find "Eleanor Rigby" to be quite a depressing song. In the end she dies and Father Mackenzie was the only one who was there to bury her.
6. In the song "Rocky Raccoon," who shot Rocky Raccoon?

Answer: Daniel

Also known as Dan and Danny Boy in the song, he stole Rocky Raccoon's girl Magil ("who calls herself Lil, but everyone knows her as Nancy"). Rocky burst in on the two, attempted to shoot Daniel, but "Daniel was hot, he drew first and shot, and Rocky collapsed in the corner."
7. Which alliteratively named character appears in the lyrics of two Beatles songs?

Answer: Polythene Pam

Polythene Pam, who is said to be Mr Mustard's sister, appears in the songs "Polythene Pam" and "Mean Mr Mustard" (although not referred to with the word Polythene in the latter). The two songs are in the "Abbey Road" album, with "Polythene Pam" immediately following "Mean Mr Mustard". Polythene is the British alternate term for the type of plastic called polyethylene.
8. The character Lucy in the song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" appears in the lyrics of another Beatles song. Which one is it?

Answer: I Am The Walrus

From "I Am The Walrus":

"Mister city policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row.
See how they fly like Lucy in the Sky, see how they run..."

The name was inspired by Julian Lennon's classmate Lucy O'Donnell, whom the former drew in a nursery classroom drawing. The drawing got the attention of John, as it showed Lucy "in the sky, with diamonds."
9. Which historical figure's picture was referenced in the song "Revolution"?

Answer: Mao Zedong

From "Revolution":

"You better free you mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow"
10. Let's finish off with this one: who had a "silver hammer"?

Answer: Maxwell Edison

The song "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is about a guy who goes on a homicidal rampage using his silver hammer on his victim's head to make "sure he/she was dead."
