Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the British Public School where the founding members of the band met?

Answer: Charterhouse

Charterhouse is in Godalming in the county of Surrey. Founded by Thomas Sutton in 1611, it is one of the original nine English public schools as defined by the Public Schools Act 1868.
Eton is a public school near Windsor, founded in 1440 by King Henry VI. Harrow is in Middlesex and is another of the original nine English public schools. Oakham, founded in 1584, is in the market town of Oakham in Rutland.
2. Who were the founding members of Genesis?

Answer: Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips

Genesis was formed from the merger of two bands; Garden Wall (Peter and Tony) and Anon (Mike and Ant). While Phil Collins and Steve Hackett were members of the band, they were not part of the original line-up.
3. Which of the following was NOT a drummer for Genesis?

Answer: Richard MacPhail

Richard MacPhail had sung in Anon with Mike and Ant. He was an important friend and supporter of the band, helping them on tour as their first road manager until going his own way in 1974.
Chris Stewart was the original drummer and played with Genesis until their first recording sessions in 1969. He was replaced by John Silver, who continued with the band up until the recording of "Trespass" (1970). Just before those sessions began, John Mayhew stepped in and played on that album. Not long after that, Mayhew left and Phil Collins was hired. The rest, as they say, is history.
4. Who gave Genesis their first break, along with their name?

Answer: Jonathan King

Jonathan King was an alumni of Charterhouse who found fame with the song "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" in 1965. When he played a concert at his old school, he was presented with demo tapes and was impressed enough to sign the band to its first recording contract.

He named the band Genesis to fit in with the Biblical theme of their first album, "From Genesis to Revelation". Brian Epstein paid for the Beatles first recording session and was their manager until his death in 1967. Pete Sinfield was the lyricist for King Crimson and ELP, penning such songs as "The Court of the Crimson King" and "Pirates." Tony Stratton-Smith became Genesis' manager in 1973 and is still holding that position.
5. What fledgling record label did Genesis sign with in 1969?

Answer: Charisma

Charisma was a record label founded by former journalist Tony Stratton-Smith in 1969. Unable to find a record company that would release an album by one of his favorite groups, Mr. Stratton-Smith founded his own company. The first act signed to it was that favorite band- Van der Graaf Generator. Atco, which was formed in 1955, is a sub-label of Atlantic; the Atco name is simply an abbreviation of ATlantic COrporation. Atlantic was founded in 1947 by Ahmet Ertegün and Herb Abramson. Charisma eventually became part of the Atlantic family. Rhino was originally a novelty song and reissue label.

It is now a subsidiary of Time-Warner and is responsible for recent box set reissues of Genesis material.
6. In which American metropolitan area did Genesis play their first North American concert?

Answer: Boston

Genesis' first ever U.S. gig was at Brandeis University in Waltham (a suburb of Boston) on November 16, 1972. The following night, Philharmonic Hall in New York was their second. Neither gig went well according to the band.
The following year, they began in New York at Carnegie Hall on March 2, 1973. After two shows in Canada, they played Miami on March 5 and, later, Pittsburgh on the 13th.
7. What well-known British drummer filled in for Phil on tour before Chester Thompson took over?

Answer: Bill Bruford

Bill Bruford was a founding member of the band Yes. He played with them until 1972 when he joined King Crimson. He toured with Genesis for six months. Alan White was hired to play with Yes after Bruford left and is still with them. White has appeared on over fifty albums with artists from John Lennon and George Harrison to Joe Cocker, Ginger Baker and The Ventures. Carl Palmer was the third member of Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

He is a veteran of a number of British bands, including the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Atomic Rooster and Asia. Roger Taylor is the drummer and backing (sometimes lead) vocalist of the rock band Queen.

Interestingly enough, he was considered for Genesis in 1970 (after John Mayhew left) but never came to audition for them.

They ended up hiring Phil Collins.
8. What English novel inspired the title of Genesis' eighth studio album as well as two tracks on that album?

Answer: Wuthering Heights

"Wind and Wuthering" was the band's last studio album with guitarist Steve Hackett. The title was based on Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights". That book's last lines -"how anyone could ever imagine unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in that quiet earth"- inspired the titles of the seventh and eighth tracks. "Agnes Grey" is an 1847 novel written by Emily's sister, Anne Brontë.

The novel is about a governess and is said to be based on the author's own experiences. "Bleak House" is a novel by Charles Dickens, published in twenty monthly installments between March 1852 and September 1853.

It is held to be one of Dickens's finest works. "Pride and Prejudice" is the most famous of Jane Austen's novels, first published in 1813. It is one of the first "romantic comedies" in the history of the novel.
9. What was the only Genesis single to reach number one on the U.S. charts?

Answer: Invisible Touch

"Invisible Touch" was released on May 19, 1986. It reached number one in the U.S. and number 15 in the U.K. "Land Of Confusion", released on Nov 10 of the same year went to number four and number 14 in the U.S. and U.K., respectively. "No Son Of Mine" was the first single from the 1991 album, "We Can't Dance".

It was released on October 21, reached number 12 in the U.S. and went to number one in Canada. "I Can't Dance" was the follow-up and went as high as number seven on the U.S. charts.
10. Which of the following has NOT produced a Genesis album?

Answer: Alan Parsons

Alan Parsons is a British audio engineer, musician, and record producer. He was involved in the production of several successful albums, including The Beatles' "Abbey Road" and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". His own group, the Alan Parsons Project, has also been commercially successful. David Hentschel had served as an engineer for Foxtrot (1972) and was hired by Genesis to produce their first post-Gabriel album, "A Trick Of the Tail", in 1975.

He worked with them on three more albums. Hugh Padgham produced two very successful albums for Genesis in the 80s; "Genesis" (1983) and "Invisible Touch" (1986). Nick Davis produced several solo albums for both Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford.

He co-produced 'Calling All Stations" (1997) as well as DVDs of the last three tours and is the band's mixer for the Archive Box Sets.

He has his own forum at the band's fan website, Genesis-Music.com.
