Give Me Some Sunshine Trivia Quiz

I live in Manchester, and unlike Florida, it's not always sunny here, so I've decided to write a quiz to combat those seasonal blues. These songs all feature 'sun' or 'sunshine' in their lyrics and/or titles.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Dark clouds drift away to reveal the sunshine...' Which Liverpool band, who also sang 'Female Of The Species' and 'Avenging Angels', released the song 'Dark Clouds' in 1997?

Answer: Space

'Dark Clouds' was released in February 1997. It came out at a bad time for Space, as guitarist Jamie Murphy had temporarily left the band a month earlier due to a nervous breakdown (he rejoined in the spring of 2007), and the band had to perform the song on 'Top of the Pops' without him. Space split up in 2005, but reformed with a new line-up in 2011.
2. 'You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are grey...' You might have heard of the song 'You Are My Sunshine'. Less well known are the Scottish band Glasvegas, who sampled the lyrics in one of their songs, about the murder of Glasgow teen Kriss Donald. Which song was this?

Answer: Flowers & Football Tops

Glasvegas released 'Flowers & Football Tops' as a single in 2009. The title is an allusion to the practice of laying flowers and shirts of the deceased's football team at the site of a death. Glasvegas changed the lyrics slightly - 'you'll never know, dear, how much I loved you / Please don't take my sunshine away' became 'I hope you noticed how much I loved you / How could they take my sunshine away?'
3. 'And if you follow, there may Be a tomorrow, but if Your offer's shunned, you might as well be walking on the sun.' Which band, also responsible for 'All Star' and a cover of the Monkees' 'I'm A Believer' on the 'Shrek' soundtrack, released 'Walking On The Sun' in 1997?

Answer: Smash Mouth

'Walkin' On The Sun' was released in the summer of 1997 and got to Number One on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. It was followed up by a cover of War's 'Why Can't We Be Friends?' (Incidentally, it mainly gets a mention in this quiz as it was the first single I ever bought, after hearing it played incessantly on Radio One.)
4. Which 'sunny' Beatles song formed part of the medley on the B-side of 'Abbey Road'?

Answer: Sun King

'Sun King' was written by John Lennon. It was originally going to be called 'Here Comes The Sun King', but the band decided to change the title to avoid the song being confused with 'Here Comes The Sun'. A track called 'Gnik Nus', with reversed vocals from the song, appeared on the soundtrack to the Cirque du Soleil show 'Love'.
5. 'Vega, Capella Hadar, Rigel, Barnard's Star, Antares, Aldebaran, Altair Wolf 359, Betelgeuse Sun sun sun sun sun...' Here's a tricky one: which Blur song, sung by bassist Alex James and featured on 'Parklife', contains the above line? (Hint: it's not a single, and it's very short.)

Answer: Far Out

'Far Out' is not the only space-themed Blur song; the band also wrote a song called 'Beagle 2' commissioned by the British scientist Colin Pillinger. It was to be played as a call sign by the Beagle 2 spacecraft when it landed on Mars as part of a search for life on the planet. (Sadly, the project failed.) Both Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree have expressed an interest in astronomy and space travel in various interviews.

A longer, more fast-paced demo version of 'Far Out' can be found on the 'Blur 21' box set.
6. 'I wanna see the sunshine after the rain I wanna see bluebirds flying over the mountains again.' 'Sunshine After The Rain' was originally recorded by Elkie Brooks in 1977. Which 'fruity' British dance act released a cover of the song in 1995?

Answer: Berri

Berri, real name Rebecca Sleight, was a British singer who collaborated with producer Nick Kirkby on a dance cover of 'Sunshine After The Rain'. The song was originally released in 1994, peaking at number 26 on the UK singles chart, but hit the number four spot on its re-release the following year. (The other answers are all dance acts who released singles around the same period.)
7. 'Let your arms be as warm as the sun from up above, Bring me fun, bring me sunshine, bring me love.' Which British comedy duo covered Arthur Kent's 'Bring Me Sunshine', and used it as the ending theme music on their show?

Answer: Morecambe and Wise

'Bring Me Sunshine' became Morecambe and Wise's signature tune during their second series. After Morecambe's death in 1984, a tribute show, also called 'Bring Me Sunshine', was held at the London Palladium in his honour. Ernie Wise hosted the show, and comedy acts appearing included Benny Hill, Cannon and Ball, and Des O'Connor.

The song has also been covered by Brenda Lee and Willie Nelson.
8. Bill Withers' 1971 classic 'Ain't No Sunshine' was originally a B-side. True or false?

Answer: true

'Ain't No Sunshine' was originally a B-side on the single 'Harlem', released in June 1971, and was produced and arranged by Booker T. Jones. It became a hit in its own right when DJs played it instead of 'Harlem'. Withers was inspired to write the song after watching the film 'Days of Wine and Roses', which starred Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick as an alcoholic couple.
9. 'Shine on, benevolent sun Shine down upon the broken Shine until the two become one.' The song is 'Jambi', the album is '10,000 Days', but can you tell me which band sang it? (Hint: Maynard James Keenan.)

Answer: Tool

According to an interview with drummer Danny Carey on the Tool fansite Fourth Eye, 'Jambi' was named after the genie on 'Pee Wee's Playhouse', who lived in a jewelled box and granted wishes. When bassist Justin Chamberlain played the bassline, Carey and singer Maynard James Keenan thought of the magic words said by the genie on the show ('mecca lecca hi, mecca hi-nee-ho') and Keenan was inspired to write a song about wishes.

The song was released as a single in 2007.
10. The Manic Street Preachers sang 'You Stole The Sun From My Heart'. Catatonia sang 'Don't Need The Sunshine.' The Super Furry Animals sang 'Hello Sunshine' and 'Cardiff In The Sun'. What do all these bands have in common?

Answer: They all come from Wales

'You Stole The Sun From My Heart' was one of the singles from the Manics' fifth album (and their first without any tracks written by Richey Edwards), 'This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours'. 'Don't Need The Sunshine' is an album track on Catatonia's second album, 'International Velvet'. As for the Super Furry Animals, 'Hello Sunshine' was the second single to be released from their sixth album, 'Phantom Power', while 'Cardiff In The Sun' appears on their ninth album, 'Dark Days / Light Years'.

Catatonia and the Super Furry Animals are both from Cardiff (in fact, SFA drummer Daf Ieuan used to play with Catatonia, as did bassist Guto Pryce), while the Manics are from Blackwood, Caerphilly.
