Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1936
Answer: Detroit Red Wings
Dick Irvin's Maple Leafs lost the finals for the second straight year. This time they fell 3-1 to the Red Wings, who won their first championship. It was also the first title for Wings' coach Jack Adams. It was the third time in four years that Irvin had coached the runners-up.
2. 1937
Answer: Detroit Red Wings
Winning three games to two over Les Patrick's Rangers, the Wings repeated as champions. When the Stanley Cup was engraved they included the players' positions for both years the Wings had won, it was the first time that had happened. That was removed in 1957 when the engravings were all re-done.
3. 1938
Answer: Chicago Black Hawks
Bill Stewart led the Hawks to their third Stanley Cup. They won three games to one over the Maple Leafs. It was the first championship for Stewart.
4. 1939
Answer: Boston Bruins
The Bruins beat the Red Wings in the finals. Between them, the two teams had been in the finals 12 times heading into the series, neither had a winning record in the finals. The Bruins were 1-2 and the Leafs 3-4 in the series before it started. After the series, the Bruins evened their record but still didn't have a winning mark.
5. 1940
Answer: New York Rangers
The Maple Leafs lost the finals for the third straight year, all to different teams. The Rangers won the series four games to two for their third championship. Dick Irvin's Maple Leafs were the losing team for the 7th time in 10 seasons.
6. 1941
Answer: Boston Bruins
Cooney Weiland, in his first finals appearance, won the title as the Bruins coach. He had taken over the team from legendary coach Art Ross. They beat the Red Wings 4-0 for the title.
7. 1942
Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs
After making the finals, and losing, 7 of 10 seasons Dick Irvin left the Leafs.
Hap Day in his second season in Toronto won the first of his five Stanley Cups. The Red Wings lost in the finals for the second straight year. The series went seven games.
8. 1943
Answer: Detroit Red Wings
Making their third straight finals appearance, the Red Wings won the title for the third time in franchise history. They bested Art Ross' Bruins. Ross had taken a year away from coaching in the 1940-41 season, so while it was the second time in three seasons the two teams had met up, it was the first time he'd bested the Wings.
9. 1944
Answer: Montreal Canadiens
Coach Dick Irvin won his second championship, and first with Montreal, as his team beat Chicago 4-0. Ironically it would be Chicago Coach Toe Blake, taking over for Irvin in Montreal a couple seasons later that would start a dynasty there.
10. 1945
Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs
Hap Day's Leafs beat Jack Adams Red Wings 4-0. It was the second straight 4-0 sweep in the finals, though none of the teams were the same. Babe Pratt scored the series-winning goal.
