For the third straight year, and fourth in five seasons the Red Wings and Canadiens met in the finals. For the first time in that stretch, Montreal came out on top. This was the sixth straight year Montreal was in the finals. It was the first time that Toe Blake lead the team to the finals following the retirement of Dick Irvin the previous offseason.

This year the Bruins fell to the defending champions from Montreal 4-1. It was the seventh straight year the Canadiens were in the finals.

The Leafs won a back-to-back Cup with a 4-1 victory over Sid Abel's Red Wings. It was the second time Abel had lost in the finals as a coach.
