1. The 2006 World Series found the St. Louis Cardinals up against the Detroit Tigers. What year did they last meet in the promised land?

Answer: 1968

The 1968 series was a much anticipated one with the arms of Tiger Denny McLain and Mickey Lolich going up against the great Bob Gibson of the Cardinals. The Tigers were victorious by wining four of the seven games, and Lolich was the series MVP for winning three of those games. The Tigers and Cardinals also met in the 1934 series, with St. Louis winning four games to three.
2. Which of the following Hall of Fame pitchers never won a World Series game?

Answer: Ferguson Jenkins

Fergie never even appeared in a World Series game. In his 19 seasons, he played for the Phillies, Cubs, Rangers, and Red Sox, and could not hook up with a pennant-winning team. He retired in 1983.
3. Charley Radbourn was the first pitcher in history to win 50 games in a season when he went 59-12 in 1884. How many National vs American League World Series game victories did he have in his career?

Answer: 0

Radbourn went 59-12 in 1884 with the Providence Grays. Although postseason games were considered exhibition games prior to World Series play in 1903, he did play in a championship series against an American Association team before retiring in 1891.

They all went to the promised land except for the Pilots in their one only year of existence. The franchise began in 1969, finished last in the AL West, then moved to Milwaukee to become the Brewers in 1970. The franchise went to their first World Series in 1982, but lost to the Cardinals four games to three.
5. Many players have hit four home runs in a single World Series. Who was the first player in history to hit four home runs in two different World Series?

Answer: Duke Snider

The others listed never hit four home runs in a series even once. Duke Snider of the Brooklyn Dodgers hit four in the 1952 series against the Yankees, then again in the 1955 series agains that the pinstripes won again. In six World Series, Duke hit 11 home runs. He retired with 407 after 18 seasons in 1964.
6. Which of the following Yankee greats never hit a World Series home run in a Yankee uniform?

Answer: Bobby Murcer

Murcer played in 13 seasons as a Yankee but went to only one World Series. His only appearance was in 1981 in a loss to the Dodgers. Howard hit five in ten Yankee World Series, Tresh hit four in three series, and Rizzuto even got into the act by hitting two in nine of his series.
7. Since the beginning of each of these 2006 franchises, which team had to wait at least 40 seasons to appear in their first World Series?

Answer: Angels

The Indians and White Sox franchises were two of the original American League teams in 1901. The Indians waited 20 seasons when they won the series against the Brooklyn Robins in 1920. The White Sox made their first appearance in 1906 in a win against their cross-town rival Cubs.

The Blue Jays' franchise began in 1977, then won two consecutive World Series in 1992 and 1993. It was the lonesome Angels who began their franchise as an expansion team in 1961, then went through 42 seasons before experiencing the promised land in 2002 against the Giants.

The Angels won it all four games to three.

Answer: 1921

There were only four best-of-nine Major League World Series. The first was in the first World Series in 1903, then 1919, 1920, and finally in 1921. 1921 was the Yankees' first trip to the series, but lost to the New York Giants.
9. From 1949-1958, the miraculous New York Yankees went to nine of those ten World Series. Which was the only other team to represent the American League in those 10 World Series?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The Yankees' streak included five consecutive World Series crowns from 1949-1953. The 1954 Indians with their tremendous 111-43 record, spoiled the Yankees chances of the immortal streak. The Yankees finished eight games behind the Indians with 103 wins of their own in that 154-game season.
10. The World Series MVP award began in 1955. In the first ten World Series of this award, nine of those MVP awards went to a pitcher. Who was the only non-pitcher to win the award in those 10 World Series?

Answer: Bobby Richardson

Richardson was the only batter to break the pitcher streak in 1960. Although his Yankees lost to Bill Mazeroski's Pirates, Bobby won the MVP with his 11 hits, including two doubles, two triples, a home run, 12 RBIs, and his .367 average.
