Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This episode opened to Nick wearing sunglasses and floating in a pool.

Answer: True

Through the opening segments, Lou Reed's song "Perfect Day" played. Travis jogged as though all was normal, Chris videoed from the roof of the house, Daniel kept watch through a window, and Chris reported to the camera it had been nine days since the lights went out.

Lou Reed passed away in 2013 at the age of 71. The song reflects a string of pleasant thoughts, on a perfect day, which these characters would probably never see again. Irony?
2. Who discovered a possible signal coming from a house in the burned zone outside of their perimeter fence?

Answer: Chris

While he was on the roof making videos of the devolution of human existence, he saw a reflection coming from a house in the distance. The reflection was quick, but not consistent enough to pass it off for wind moving an object, or just the sun glinting off of an object. Chris used a mirror to reflect back at the house. Travis did not take him too seriously when he reported it, but later Maddie and Travis saw light as well, but at night. Travis had actually reported Chris' discovery to Lt. Moyers, so when Travis saw the light, he also saw machine gun fire stopping whomever was sending the signal.

This was probably Travis' first true inclination that all may not return to normal.
3. Lt. Moyers reported to the community that they were in one of how many safe zones south of the San Gabriel?

Answer: 12

After he read off the list of ongoing rules, and reported on future plans, he was questioned by several people in the neighborhood, which was now surrounded by a perimeter fence. He said they were "infection free" in a six mile radius (highly doubtful), and that this area was one of 12 safe zones south of the San Gabriel, I assume he meant the valley.

Jamie McShane played Lt. Moyers. He was also in "The Fosters" and "Bloodline".
4. What was the name of the critically ill man from whom Nick siphoned off morphine?

Answer: Hector

Nick told Maddie he was choosing not take the oxy because he had to stop using anyway. Maddie missed the red flag of how relaxed Nick appeared. He floated in the pool and then waited for Liza to finish her exam of Hector. When she was done, and the man's wife was out in her garden, Nick sneaked inside and hid under the man's bed. He put the morphine drip right into his own body. Hector was taken away by Dr. Exner and the military.

Luis Javier played Hector Ramirez.
5. Who was making out with a soldier in order to get medicine for her mother?

Answer: Ofelia

She was sitting in a military vehicle kissing him, etc. She finally pulled back and asked him about the medicine. He admitted it was being stock piled for the "push to take back the city". Her mother was in dire need of help, and already 10 days had passed since she was injured.

Shawn Hatosy played the military man, Andrew Adams. He also played Officer Bryant on the series "Southland".
6. Travis went looking for Maria's husband Doug after the man left unexpectedly.

Answer: True

Earlier in the episode, Lt. Moyers forced Travis to chat with Doug. Doug had denied the military the right to do a medical evaluation on him. So, Moyers told Travis "either talk him down or we take him down". Travis was able to convince Doug to allow the testing, but he later drove away from home, which was not allowed. So, Marie came to Travis and told him.

He told her and her kids that he would find Doug. He later found out from Moyers that Doug had been taken into custody because he was emotionally unstable.
7. Maddie escaped the fence and went looking in the burned zone. When the military vehicles came through, where did she hide?

Answer: Under a car

It was obvious from her reaction inside the burned zone that the smell was awful there. She saw a man dead in the street with a pistol laying near his hand. It was unclear if he'd been shot, or shot himself. As the military came through, she quickly dove underneath a car, and a dead woman offered even more cover.
8. Who led Dr. Exner to Nick?

Answer: Liza

Dr. Exner knew that Liza was not yet a real nurse, but wanted her to continue to help the people in the community. That's what she told her, but what she really wanted was someone to reveal all of the sick people and then convince them to leave peacefully. Liza led the doctor to Nick, who told Travis she was the town narc. When he found out that Hector Ramirez and his morphine supply were gone, his heart rate increased.

Sandrine Holt played Dr. Bethany Exner. She's also been on "The L Word", "Hostages", and "House of Cards". Was her last name really Exner, or was that just an abbreviation for examiner? Hmmm...
9. Did Alicia give herself a tattoo?

Answer: Yes

She did it to save the drawing Matt did on her arm in the first episode. They'd been sitting together in the lights above their school, and he drew a pattern on her arm with a black ink marker. It was getting very faded, so she tattooed herself to save it. She knew she wouldn't be seeing him again.
10. Maddie attacked someone. Who did she hit repeatedly?

Answer: Nick

He was desperately rifling through stuff, looking for drugs. When she saw and realized he'd lied to her, she lost it. She knew what could be coming, knew she couldn't control it or him, and started smacking him. She kept telling him that he "had no idea" as she hit him.

She couldn't save him from himself. That entire scene warranted my own personal Emmy nomination. At the end of the episode, Nick was taken away by the military, alongside Griselda, and Liza joined them in order to continue helping sick people.
