The episode began with President Bartlet getting off Air Force One to talk with reporters about his most recent visit with the Prime Minister of India. He said they had a good talk about how the Prime Minister was committed to working on a peaceful resolution regarding the region of Kashmir. He then stated how they played a nice game of chess.

C.J. was right near President Bartlet when he was speaking to the reporters about his visit to India and she called up Leo to talk to him. He asked her what was happening down there so she informed him that President Bartlet was speaking about the history of chess. Leo instructed C.J. to get President Bartlet in a car so he could get back to The White House as soon as possible.

President Bartlet got on the phone with Leo and Leo informed him there was a serious issue with China and Taiwan. He stated how Taiwan was considering testing some missiles of theirs and how China was prepared to commit to military action in Taiwan if they went ahead with the test.

He asked President Bartlet if they should instruct Taiwan not to test the missiles and President Bartlet it would be no use since Taiwan would not listen to them.

C.J. gave a press conference near the beginning of this episode on the issue with Taiwan possibly testing patriot missiles so she took a question from Katie. She asked if President Bartlet would tell Taiwan not to test them so C.J. said she was unsure and also commented those missiles were to be used only when attacked.

Another reporter chimed in and said the possible test was China's excuse for fueling war games. C.J. stated she was in no position to comment on what was provoking any war games.

When a reporter asked C.J. if President Bartlet would monitor the situation between China and Taiwan, C.J. said he would monitor it from both the China Sea and Hartsfield's Landing. C.J. mentioned that Hartsfield's Landing was a small town in New Hampshire that had a small population of just 63 residents.

She stated that Hartsfield's Landing has accurately predicted the winner in every presidential election since William Howard Taft.

C.J. was walking down a hallway of the west wing when she noticed Charlie carrying some items. She asked them what they were so he told her they were chess sets and he was distributing them. She asked him for a copy of President Bartlet's private schedule and he said she would have to sign it out and not take it outside The White House. Charlie reminded her that she had to sign the schedule back in once she was finished with it.

Josh called for Donna to come to his office so she arrived and he asked her if she knew of someone named Jennifer Flender. Donna said she knew Jennifer's parents were Mackey and Robert Flender so Josh told her that Jennifer emailed him to say that her parents would not be voting for President Bartlet. Donna asked Josh why Jennifer emailed him so he replied that it was because she had a crush on him.

Near the end of the episode, President Bartlet and Sam were playing a game of chess and Sam took so long that President Bartlet went to rest on the sofa. He told Sam that the Spanish brought chess to the court of Charlemagne in 760 A.D. and that the word "Charlemagne" was French for "Charles the Great." President Bartlet also stated there was a river in Boston named The Charles River.
