Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which class of starship did the Enterprise pick up a subspace distress signal from an unexplored moon of a distant planet? (Hint: This class of starship is no longer in service).

Answer: Daedalus

This question is significant because the Daedalus class starship hasn't been in Starfleet in nearly two centuries. This was a main point discussed among Picard, Riker, and Data at the beginning of the episode. Data is able to determine that the signal is consistent with the type of distress call that the USS Essex, that vanished in this area over two centuries ago.

All the other starship classes mentioned in the answers are in operation in the "Star Trek Universe" from "TNG" on. The USS Enterprise-D that we see throughout "Star Trek: The Next Generation," was a Galaxy class starship and was destroyed in the events of "Star Trek: Generations" (Star Trek VII). USS Voyager from "Star Trek: Voyager" was an Intrepid class starship. And the USS Enterprise-E that you see in the movie "Star Trek: First Contact," (Star Trek VIII) was a Sovereign class starship.
2. Why did Captain Picard send an away team to the planet if the USS Essex went missing so long ago, and there was no possibility of there being any survivors?

Answer: Counselor Troi, with her empathic abilities, was able to sense someone alive on the planet.

Picard was actually going to consider the matter of the missing Essex resolved now that they knew were the ship went down, and it wasn't until Deanna exclaimed that she could sense living people on the planet that they decided to investigate.
3. The away team had to go to the planet in a shuttle craft instead of transporting down due to the major electromagnetic storms on the planet.

Answer: True

The electromagnetic storms were massive and interfered with the ship's operations and it was not safe to use the transporters for three people. When the landing party got to the surface, you could see that the atmosphere was very stormy with big flashes of lightning.

In fact the shuttle craft had to crash land on the moon's surface.
4. Who went in the shuttle craft to investigate?

Answer: Riker, Data, and Troi

Watch out! When they return to the Enterprise, all except one, eventually acts like a completely different person and try to take over the ship!
5. Who risked his life to transport to the planet with pattern enhancing equipment, to rescue the away team who had crashed? (Hint: Think about the crew positions each person held on the Enterprise).

Answer: Miles O'Brien

Talk about your devotion to your fellow crew members and it wasn't even known if they were alive. He had only a 50% chance of making it down safely. And he had to hurry because a storm was approaching the place it was determined the shuttle crash landed.

In the next scene we watch Miles and one of the pattern enhancers get struck by lightning and all fall back on the ground. Then white balls of light hover over the unconscious landing party, entering three of their bodies.
6. Who was the only one whose body was not taken over by the alien entities?

Answer: Riker, because his arm was broken in the crash landing.

LaForge was never on the surface of the moon so was never possessed. Both Data and Troi were possessed by the alien entities. Dr. Crusher hypothesized that the pain from Riker's broken arm repelled the entities. Based on this theory, Picard and his crew decided to use a plasma charge to try and drive out the alien entities.
7. What part of the ship did the possessed crew members first go and take hostages?

Answer: Ten Forward

This is where Picard talks to the entities that have taken over three of his crew. "Troi," the spokesperson claims to be the consciousness of the captain of the long missing USS Essex and the others his first officer and security chief.
8. Both Captain Picard and Worf do not believe for a minute the information given by "Troi" that the entities were really the consciousnesses or spirits of the missing crew of the USS Essex.

Answer: False

It is false because though Captain Picard doesn't believe this one little bit, despite what "Troi" claims, Worf isn't so sure. He describes the legends he has heard of "spiritual possessions" happening in the history of the Klingon people. It was clear he believed that this was possible and could have happened in this situation. Picard wasn't buying any of it.
9. The beings possessing the three crew members knew a lot about the personal backgrounds of those they possessed as well as historical records.

Answer: True

"Troi" used all this information especially about the Essex, to try to convince Picard that they were really the spirits or consciousnesses of the long missing crew of the Essex. Picard asked "Troi" a lot of questions to see how much she knew.
10. Keiko O'Brien was with the group of people originally in the part of the ship that the possessed crew members took over.

Answer: True

Yes, this was Keiko O'Brien, with her new baby girl, Molly. In this viewer's opinion, it was very disturbing when the entity possessing O'Brien interacted with Keiko, citing very personal memories and tried to kiss her. He did not like the crying of the baby. The possessed O'Brien was so eerily, unlike his normal self, the first time I watched this episode I feared for the safety of Keiko and her baby.

Of course the completely altered and sinister personalities of Data and Troi were as well. Data especially seemed sadistic. Brent Spiner was excellent the times he portrayed evil or possessed Data.
11. Which best describes what happened when Ensign Ro fired a plasma charge at the possessed crew members?

Answer: The entities were driven out of two of them but not the third, who then threatened to kill Captain Picard and everyone in Ten Forward.

The plasma charge only hit Troi and Miles, but did not get Data. You could see the entities driven out of them by the pain the plasma charges caused. Data moved at the last second therefore the plasma charge missed him. The being in Data threatened the life of everybody in Ten Forward unless the attempts to stop them cease. And so LaForge and Ro stopped the plasma charges and the two entities re-entered the bodies of the other two. Data lifted Picard by the throat up in the air with one hand, nearly strangling him.
12. Before they made their way to Cargo Bay 4, what did the being possessing Troi claim was the reason they wanted the Enterprise to go to the southern polar region of the moon?

Answer: So that the remains of the long dead USS Essex crew could get a proper burial on Earth and rest in peace.

It was never mentioned that the electromagnetic storms were painful to the energy beings.

It wasn't until they were in Cargo Bay 4 that Picard confronted the leader of the entities and said he doesn't believe at all that they were really the captain and officers of the lost Essex.
13. In Shuttle Bay 4, after Picard confronted "Troi," who did we find out these beings really were and their reason for possessing three crew members?

Answer: They wanted to escape the moon which was a penal colony. They were really disembodied consciousnesses of criminals of some alien race.

"Troi" did not admit the truth until Picard confronted her and said he did not believe the story about them being the spirits or consciousnesses of the crew of the USS Essex. It turns out, they were criminals who had been forcibly removed from their bodies and left to drift with the storms.

Meanwhile Beverly Crusher was working on a containment field to trap the entities if they could successfully drive them out of the three possessed crew members.
14. What was the real reason Picard choose Cargo Bay 4, and the transporter pad there, when he offered the entities safe passage?

Answer: The cargo bay doors could be jettisoned and he knew Riker would be able to figure this out.

Riker is the one who tells Ensign Ro the only reason the captain would choose that cargo bay was because the doors could be blown and all killed. Ro was instructed to blow the hatch when Riker gave the order. Picard, Worf, and Keiko were taken as hostages to ensure safe passage from Ten Forward to Cargo Bay 4.
15. What was the reason the being possessing Troi agreed the entities would leave the bodies of the Picard's crew, and go back to the moon?

Answer: Picard said the cargo bay doors would be blown and they would all die.

It turns out they were really alien criminals whose consciousnesses had been separated from their bodies and left to drift in the storms of the moon, a penal colony. The alien energy entities had almost escaped aboard the USS Essex over 200 years ago but the ship had been destroyed in the electromagnetic storms.

Picard offered to have them transported back to the moon and not destroy them all by having the cargo bay hatch blown if the alien entities agreed to leave the bodies of Troi, O'Brien, and Data. The hostages Keiko, Worf, and Picard were willing to die in order to protect the ship. Keiko would gladly die for her child. Worf said it would be a very honorable death. So the only option the entities had was to agree to go back to the moon, otherwise they would all die, including the hundreds of energy entities trapped in the containment field.
