Meanwhile, Hawkes examines Rachel's body and finds that the redwood stake punctured Rachel's heart and diaphragm like a crude knife and there were traces of a resin-like substance in her hair. The redwood also had prints on it belonging to Ophelia.
Meanwhile, Danny and Aiden investigate another murder where a man has been beaten to death. His pockets are empty, so they assume it was a robbery.

Mac and Flack investigate the security footage and find that Rachel left the apartment and was followed by Ophelia in her nightgown. When Mac tries to talk to Ophelia about her bruised shins, she doesn't reply until he's about to leave. She claims that she was trying to dispose of the corpse, but that she didn't know who Rachel Camden was.
This leaves Mac wondering why Ophelia was standing over the body trying to grab at Rachel's heart through the large wound in her diaphragm.

Here, they find that Ophelia had bumped and bruised her shins on a step-stool and that she had eaten a pack of cigarettes. When they find a chair against Ophelia's front door, Mac thinks that she was trying to keep someone out, but Stella assumes that Ophelia tried to keep herself in because the door swings outward.

At the hospital, they find that Ophelia sleepwalks, and when she goes into sleep stage four, she gets violent.

While examining the body, Hawkes found that the victim wore an aphakic lens for an astigmatism, but the victim never wore contact lenses. Hawkes also finds that there's a small pocket in the victim's boxer shorts containing a bunch of foreign banknotes. Danny investigates the banknotes and finds a print belonging to a man named Ryan Mallone who says he changed the money at the airport on the way back from Sydney.

When Aiden and Danny investigate Lenny's apartment, they find a bunch of mannequins each with bells on them so that pickpockets can train themselves. Although many of the mannequins had ketchup on them to make a distraction, one had blood on it.
Meanwhile, Mac determines that Ophelia was pulling the wooden stake out of Rachel's body because of the splinters that were in her hands. Therefore, she never stabbed the victim.

Using a NYC subway pass that Danny finds in Lenny's apartment, he and Aiden cross town to where Lenny went to work. While watching from a rooftop, they spot a woman with a fake baby and a man pick the pocket of another man. Here, Flack catches the pickpocket, but the man claims that he doesn't know Lenny. Mac and Stella find that the resin in Rachel's hair was architect's glue, and that the victim's body indicated use of condoms for birth control.

Despite this, Todd Camden, Rachel's husband, states that he and his wife had been trying to have a baby, so they never used a condom.

The architect's glue was his though, he pulled his wife's braid in an argument.

While reviewing the surveillance tapes once again, Mac notices a shadow on the ground proving that Ophelia saw the killer as he left Rachel's corpse. Using digital photo enhancements, they get a reflection in Ophelia's eye of the killer, Jason Walder. Jason was one of the guys from the beginning of the episode who was playing basketball.

A splinter in Jason's hand confirms that he handled the murder weapon, and he confesses that he had an affair with Rachel.

When he's brought in for an interrogation, Mallone confesses to Danny that he was pickpocketed, and when he undoes his watch clasp to scratch at a rash, he leaves behind orange and white fibers (much like the ones found on the victim's socks. These are from the victim's rug.

When Aiden and Danny check Mallone's clothes, they find a dime in the cuff of the pant leg with blood on it. This blood belongs to Lenny, the victim. Both Mallone and Eduardo are sent to jail because they killed Lenny. The rash on Mallone's arm was from the jute under Lenny's carpet, and the two set Lenny up when they found that he was taking money from them.

When Eduardo punched Lenny with a dime roll in his hand, the roll broke and a dime fell into Mallone's cuff.

After solving the case, Mac finds an article about Ophelia's son on the computer. It turns out that Chris died in a car accident, and the doctors in the ER cracked his chest open, and like she did with Rachel, they held Chris' heart as he died. This is why she lives alone in her apartment, why she has many children's books on her shelves, and it's the trauma that causes her to sleepwalk.
