Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many notches off was LeAnn's belt buckle when she was found?

Answer: Two

The first victim found was next to a café under the Brooklyn Bridge. When Mac began to investigate the body, he found that it had been dumped in the location. There were no scuff marks on the knees, and the fingernails were intact, but the murderer had to have dressed the woman because the worn line on the woman's belt didn't match up. Mac also finds a gold wedding band on the woman's finger, so they decide to look for the husband as well.
2. How did LeAnn Goodman die?

Answer: Stroke

The body was taken to autopsy where bruises were found on specific regions of the neck. On the woman's back were horizontal bruises which were probably caused by prolonged stay on slats on a bed (as indicated by bed sores). A stroke went to her brain and caused hemorrhaging.

She also inhaled something before her death. While Mac checked out the body, Stella discovered that the first victim was named LeAnn Goodman. Her husband confirmed that it was her at a viewing. Last time he saw LeAnn was when they had lunch many weeks earlier. Meanwhile, Aiden and Danny discovered that there was codeine cough syrup in the victim's blood, and Mac got news of a second body.
3. Where was the second victim (Zoya) found?

Answer: On a garbage barge

After getting the call, Mac rushes to the crime scene and finds that the second woman's body has the same horizontal bruises on her back as well as the same neck bruises. Now the CSIs have two problems. For one, they have to consider that they have a serial killer to deal with. Second, they now have to sift through the garbage on the barge, which is approximately half the size of a football field. At the autopsy, Mac and Stella are told of some differences in the second murder.

There are no bedsores on Zoya, and the cause of death was strangulation/asphyxiation. Plus, Zoya's neck was snapped after she died.

When the victim's teeth were checked, gold and copper fillings were found. Mac links this to Russian dental work because of his years in the marines.
4. What is not one of the nerves/arteries in the neck that were targeted and bruised in the victims?

Answer: Trigeminal nerve

The trigeminal nerve is not actually in the neck. In order to determine what the neck bruises actually meant, Mac tried to locate the nerves and arteries that were targeted in both victims. Meanwhile, Aiden found the purse on the barge and Danny found a camera, but a chunk of the film had been ripped out.

They take it to the dark room and get a couple of pictures of the second victim. Stella finds the missing persons report for Zoya and they go to her sponsor family.
5. What is the name of Zoya's boyfriend?

Answer: Jason

When Mac and Stella ask Zoya's sponsors about her, they mention that she has a boyfriend named Jason (who is in the pictures with her). They find Jason and question him about the disappearance. He says that he hasn't seen her for about five days. They went sightseeing, but he never heard from her again. Jason has no idea where she is in the mysterious picture. Mac and Stella start a triangulation on the computer using the picture and a couple of local landmarks and they determine that she was in Queens in the picture.

They rush to the residence and hear music in the basement. They investigate and find a body on a bed. The woman is still alive, but she's hooked up to medical equipment in the room. Stella thinks that Mac should sleep a bit, but he decides to go to the hospital to question the victim. Upon further investigation, Aiden finds semen in the bedroom, but these later come up negative for both Jason and the owner of the apartment.
6. What condition is the third victim diagnosed with?

Answer: Locked-In Syndrome

When Mac goes to the hospital to examine the victim, he photographs the bruises on her neck and takes samples from under her fingernails. Before leaving, he notices her blinking. At the Crime Lab, Dr. Giles tells Mac about Locked-In Syndrome. People with this condition can be awake, but they're unable to move.

This is due to damage to the brainstem and it can't be reversed. The only way for one to communicate is through blinking or moving the eyes. Meanwhile, Flack interrogates the owner of the apartment who claims that he had a company dealing with having someone rent out his apartment. Danny takes a mucus swab for investigation.
7. The first two victims, LeAnn and Zoya, were found in the wrong order in which they were killed.

Answer: True

After learning about Locked-In Syndrome, Mac determined that Zoya and LeAnn had been failures in the murderer's 'experiment'. Zoya was first, but she was killed when her neck was snapped. The attempt at LeAnn's life was better, but she died later. The third victim was the successful experiment.

The murderer's maneuver was being mastered. Mac visits the third victim at the hospital and in order to find out more and sets up a way to communicate with her.
8. When Mac talks to the third victim in the hospital, they set up a way to communicate. How many times must she blink to say 'yes'?

Answer: Twice

Mac's idea works, so he asks her some questions. First, he shows her a picture of LeAnn, but she doesn't recognize her or her husband, Tim. Mac also shows her a picture of Zoya, and another of Jason, but once again, she doesn't know any of them. He then shows her a picture of the apartment owner and she blinks twice to signify 'yes'.

She keeps blinking and soon she has a stroke leaving her braindead. This leaves Mac not knowing whether the double-blink was a 'yes' or part of the blinking leading to her stroke.
9. When inspected under a laser, what initials (in English) are found on a case from the crime scene?

Answer: B I

Mac and Stella decide to dig a little deeper and use high strength chemicals under a laser to inspect everything more closely. They find Cyrillic initials on a bag (which translate to B. I. in English) as well as a hammer and sickle logo. Mac realizes that the B. I. stands for Dr. Bogdhan Ivanov, Stella's male sponsor.

They bring him to the lab and interrogate him where they find that he was a medical doctor in Russia and that he was in prison for treason. His semen was found in the apartment. Mac reveals everything to him, and when the facts are presented, Ivanov confesses.
10. What is the murderer's profession?

Answer: Taxi driver

Using the taxi, Ivanov was able to get his victims. He offered them a cigarette containing codeine cough syrup and it knocked them out. LeAnn's husband even mentioned that he put her into a cab after their lunch together. Ivanov felt that the women wanted to live with freedom, but Mac felt he did it for control. In the end, Mac sits next to the third victim's bedside and talks about his wife, Claire, who died on 9/11.

He mentions that he had to throw her belongings away because it was too painful, but he kept a beach ball because her breath was still inside of it.

In the end, Mac stands outside of Ground Zero and the ashes of the World Trade Center, and he closes his eyes.
