Mac and Danny are called to a scene underground in this episode. While working on water pipes 700 feet below the ground in New York, a man was killed when a bomb was set off to clear granite. The man who was murdered was supposed to be working above ground loading and unloading, so he wasn't wearing protective gear.

He wasn't shot or stabbed, but Mac finds trace under his fingernails. Danny and Mac are forced to go through the crime scene, rock by rock, to get to the bottom of it. Meanwhile, the District Attorney checks in because he's is eager to have Mac out of the hole so that the water pipe can be finished.

The employees (known as the Sandhogs) are eager to finish the pipeline and get water to New York, and when Flack questions them, they don't seem to care too much. The employees say that they measure each other by 'a man a mile' since one person seems to be killed for every mile of tunnel that they finish.

The victim, Pete Riggs, didn't have any protective gear on, but the Sandhogs say that men would just go into the tunnel and come back up in order to fix something or ask a question without wearing the gear.

While Mac and Danny work at the tunnel, Stella and Aiden are called to a body found in a creek. The victim, Hannah Ricci, was found wearing upscale clothing, and upon further investigation, there was a ligature furrow around her neck to indicate strangulation.

They find out that she was a student at Chase, an upscale New York school. On the night that she went missing, she was supposed to go to a friend's house to study. Her friend, Melissa, said that she never showed up. When they search Hannah's locker, they find that she was a poor girl in an upscale school who tried to fit in.

After Mac washes the victim's body, Danny tells him that the trace under the victim's fingernails was just steel and ferric oxide. When Hawkes and Mac look at an x-ray of the body, nearly all of the bones are broken, but that didn't contribute to his death. What killed him was asthma.

When Mac tests the victim's blood, he notices it has Alveolar Eosinophils (which is common in asthma). They check for his inhaler in the tunnel, and when they find it, it's empty. They are left with another dilemma after this.

They need to figure out how the victim got to where he was after going so far down the tunnel.

Aiden decides to find out what was used to create the ligature furrow, and she discovers that crocodile skin matches the indentations. Stella and Aiden also discover that a material found in the victim's mouth turned out to be gold leaf. When Stella investigates the diatoms from the water in Hannah's lungs, they find lead and cadmium. Therefore, the water she was in was toxic.

Meanwhile, Mac and Danny find blood on one of the Sandhogs' boots (which turns out to be from the victim) and traces of a white substance on the foreman's clothes. When they look at an x-ray of the victim's hand, there's a dislocated muscle.

Mac and Danny interrogate the man who had the blood on his shoe and he says that it came from a fight he had with the murder victim that they had over the Rangers. When they find bite marks on McGrath's ear, they try to match it to Pete Riggs' teeth marks, but they can't. They get dental molds from the other Sandhogs and the marks turn out to be from another employee, Tom Zito.

While working above ground, Pete accidentally knocked his keys off his belt. They fell into the elevator shaft, and onto Tom Zito's head, taking him out of the tunnel for two months. He says that McGrath broke up a fight between himself and Riggs, but was bit in the ear in the process. Zito says that the blow to the head changed him and forced his wife to leave him to protect their children.

After searching the system for illegal dumpers, Aiden and Stella come across Whiteridge Enterprises, who have been dumping materials containing lead and cadmium. Aiden suggests that the victim was clubbing in the industrial area, and it is discovered that Hannah's friend's brother owns a club next door to Whiteridge Enterprises.

Danny and Mac find that the material on the foreman's shirt turns out to be spray from Riggs' asthma inhaler. When they ask the foreman about it, they are told that he sprayed it on himself, but it was while yelling at Riggs regarding the safety of other crew members. Meanwhile, Stella and Aiden talk to the club owner, Matt Paulson, and he says that Hannah often went with his family on hunting trips.

Although he tells them to check his security camera to see if she was there, it's not hooked up, so they check some cameras from around the area.

When they find another camera, they see Tina being let into the club alone, and they find Hannah arriving at the club and kissing Matt at the entrance. They decide to ask Matt a few questions at his apartment and when they arrive, they find the heads of many wild animals on his wall, and that Matt's father died a few months earlier. Stella finds a picture of Hannah with blood all over her in Matt's apartment and he explains that she wore the head of a fox to signify her first kill at a foxhunt in England.

They check the camera's tapes again and find that Hannah's friend (and Matt's sister) Tina was at the club. They also notice that her purse is missing a strap when she's in front of the club. Since she had a strap on her purse earlier, they deduced that it could be the murder weapon. When they talk to Tina and her attorney, they find a crocodile-skin strap in her purse. She ends up confessing. Since her father had Hannah wear the fox head at the foxhunt in England instead of her, she got fed up and strangled her in a club down the street.

While trying to put the evidence together, Danny and Mac hear the news that Joe Riggs, Pete's brother was beaten at the tunnel and that he's in the hospital. When they look at the x-ray of Pete's hand again, they notice that the ring finger of his hand is injured differently from the other injuries on his body; almost like he was missing a ring. Mac and Danny search the tunnel again and find Joe's Sandhogs Union Ring with a metal detector.

When Mac interrogates Joe, he confesses that the Sandhogs beat him, but it wasn't to keep him quiet; he broke the code.

He left his brother in the tunnels one night in order to let him 'earn' his ring. Joe took Pete's ring off in the elevator and threw it down on the way up. This broke Pete's hand and dislocated his ring finger.

The next morning, when he found his brother's dead body, he tried to make it look like the explosion killed him.
