Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During Leg 2's 'Plant' Detour option, teams had to plant how many seedlings in a British Columbian forest?

Answer: Forty

The first Detour of the race took nine teams to Revelstoke, British Columbia's rugged and untamed wilderness where they could choose between 'Plant' and 'Paddle'. In 'Plant', they headed to a forest reserve where they had to properly plant forty seedlings as per the instructions provided, spacing them out enough and planting them just right for optimal growth in the forest. Dave and Irina, Anthony and James, Trish and Amy, Nicki and Aisha, and Lauren and Joanne completed this task. Meanwhile, teams choosing 'Paddle' had to head to Williamson Lake to jointly paddle two kayaks tied bow-to-stern and stern-to-bow, maneuvering to collect five flags from around the body of water. Said teams included Meaghan and Marie, Gilles and Sean, Aarthy and Thinesh, and Sarah and Sam.
2. In Edmonton, Alberta in Leg 3, teams chose between the 'Elevate' task and what other option?

Answer: 'Celebrate'

In Edmonton, teams got to choose between 'Elevate' and 'Celebrate'. In 'Elevate', teams needed to complete two puzzles of the Edmonton skyline, each at the top and bottom of the 100 St. Funicular. The catch was that each puzzle would have some of the other's pieces, so they would need to transport them, one at a time, to complete each one properly.

In 'Celebrate', teams instead went to the Royal Alberta Museum where they had to learn the lycis and dance steps to a traditional South African performance.

When they properly performed the dance with the Kokopelli Youth Choir they could get their next clue.
3. In Leg 3, teams encountered a new race mechanic for "The Amazing Race" as a whole that had a profound effect on the Detour in Alberta. How many teams fell victim to it?

Answer: Two

During the third leg of the race, teams opened their Detour clues on the Edmonton High Level Bridge Streetcar, right in front of "The Amazing Race's" first-ever Blind Double One-Way. This race mechanic functioned similar to the Double U-Turn, allowing one team to choose another and create a problem for another team.

In this case, the selected team had to complete the side of the Detour decided for them by the earlier team. Because it was a Blind mechanic, the ones using it remained anonymous. Lauren and Joanne used the One-Way on Trish and Amy while Sarah and Sam used it on Gilles and Sean, forcing both teams to complete 'Celebrate' instead of 'Elevation'. Meaghan and marie were the only team to choose 'Celebrate' willingly.
4. No Detours of the race took place in any of the Canadian territories.

Answer: True

Although Leg 4 of the race took teams to the city of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, the leg actually contained two Road Blocks and no Detour whatsoever. Instead, teams faced the great white north of Canada in -20 degree celsius temperatures, completing a number of detail-oriented tasks and a terrifying dip under the ice of Great Slave Lake. Neither Leg 4 nor Leg 5 contained a Detour.
5. In Leg 6 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, most teams completed 'Walk in Circles', a Detour task set in a maze. What did they need to collect throughout the maze?

Answer: Corn

At the Champêtre County Vacation Ranch, five teams chose to complete the 'Walk in Circles' Detour option, sending them through a large, complex barnboard maze searching for four different ears of corn. If they could bring all four to the end of the maze they would receive their next clue.

The other Detour option, 'Dance in a Square', was only completed by Trish and Amy who had to divide to conquer; one team member memorized a series of square dance steps that they had to recite back to the music while the other had to perform in the dance proper.
6. During the race's seventh leg (which took place in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario), how many teams completed the same task?

Answer: All of them

All six teams opted to complete 'Robot Quest', which allowed them to work together to move a robot through an obstacle course at the University of Waterloo's robot engineering department. There, one team member waited at a computer controlling a robot with a mouse and screen. On the other end of a walkie-talkie, their teammate would be elsewhere, guiding them with instructions to get their robot through an obstacle course. All teams finished this task. If they opted for the other, 'Beerfest', they would have needed to serve beer to dancing and shifting customers at a club in Kitchener.
7. What was the catch behind the Detour task found in Quebec in Leg 8?

Answer: It was a Blind Detour

Teams reached the Charlevoix region of Quebec and took part in one of two local pastimes for their Detour task in Leg 8, but they didn't know what they were getting into until they arrived at their respective tasks. Teams chose blindly between 'This' and 'That', only finding out the finer details at their destinations.

In 'This', teams visited an emu farm to paint emu eggs while in 'That', teams learned how to play the game of pick-lit. Teams could choose to back out of their respective tasks whenever they wanted to, but none of them did; Lauren and Joanne and Anthony and James completed 'This' while Aarthy and Thinesh, Dave and Irina, and Sarah and Sam completed 'That'.
8. During Leg 9 in Ontario, teams faced a limited station Detour. How many teams, at the maximum, were allowed to complete either task in Thunder Bay?

Answer: Three

In Leg 9, teams completed a Face Off in Thunder Bay before diving directly into their Detour task, a choice between 'Cutting Edge' and 'Cutting a Wedge'. The catch was that, coming out of the Face Off, later teams had to go into their tasks with the knowledge that their choice could be made for them. If three teams attempted either of the options, it would be blocked out for the remaining two.

As such, while Lauren and Joanne chose 'Cutting a Wedge', Aarthy and Thinesh showed up at 'Cutting Edge' and were forced to join Lauren and Joanne in cutting cheese at a Thunder Bay farm.

The other three teams got to pilot drones.
9. During Leg 10, teams had the choice between 'Apples' and what other Detour choice in Wolfville, Nova Scotia?

Answer: 'Puck'

In Leg 10, teams visiting rural Nova Scotia could either work on their core or handle cores. In 'Puck', teams stopped off at an Acadia University arena to learn how to play the Paralympic sport of sledge hockey, performing a drill in one minute to get their next clue. If teams wanted more of a mental drill, they could head to a local apple orchard to sort twelve local varieties of apple.

When all of them were sorted, they could proceed with the race. This one was split down the middle; Anthony and James and Sarah and Sam completed 'Puck' while Dave and Irina and Lauren and Joanne' did 'Apples'.
10. The final leg of the race contained a Detour task.

Answer: False

As has been a consistent tradition in other races of the time, the final leg did not feature a Detour task, instead focusing on the teams and their members with a double Road Block, one of which involved a physical task and the other of which was a 'needle in a haystack' search.

This race featured seven Detour tasks across eleven legs, missing them in Legs 1, 4, and 11 (which contained double Road Blocks in each) and Leg 5 in British Columbia.
