Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The series began with a death that affected the Crawley family. Who was announced as dead in the series premiere?

Answer: Cousins James and Patrick Crawley

The series began with the announcement of the sinking of the Titanic. The Crawley family knew several people who were onboard, including Robert's first cousin James and James' son Patrick. The big problem was that James, as Robert's closest living male relative, was the heir to Downton and Patrick was his only son. Patrick was also unofficially engaged to Lady Mary, so that Mary could eventually indirectly inherit her family's estate as well.

This led the Crawley family to search for the next heir, and that's how Matthew, a distant cousin, came to Downton.
2. There were frequent overnight guests at the Abbey throughout the seasons. Unfortunately one of them, Kemal Pamuk, died during the night in season one. Even more unfortunate was where, specifically, he died; where was it?

Answer: In Mary's bedroom

Kemal Pamuk was a Turkish diplomat who came to stay at Downton with Evelyn Napier. Evelyn Napier was invited to try to inspire a romance between him and Mary, but Mr. Pamuk took a shine to Mary as well, and she seemed to enjoy his company more than Mr. Napier's. Pamuk made an arrangement with Thomas, the footman, to get into Mary's bedroom late at night.

Mary was shocked at first, but he seduced her and she allowed him into her bed, a very major no-no for a lady of her station in 1913. Things went south when Pamuk died of an apparent heart attack while still in Mary's bed. Mary, Cora and Anna ended up carrying Pamuk's body across the house to the bedroom where he was staying to try avoid a scandal. It didn't stay as secret as they'd hoped and this plotline had lasting effects on Mary through to the end of season two.
3. When season two began, the world was at war. Several members of the Downton household were involved in the war effort, including at the front. Who eventually died, back at Downton with his new wife at his side, from injuries suffered at the front?

Answer: William

William, a footman at Downton, was keen to join up when the war broke out. He didn't go right away, as his father didn't want to lose him, but was eventually conscripted and had to go. Before leaving, he asked Daisy, the kitchen maid, to marry him and she agreed to the engagement so that he would be in good spirits; she planned to break it off when the war was over.

At the front, William was a servant to Matthew, who was a Captain in the army. The pair were seriously injured, with William taking more of the hit while trying to protect Matthew. Both were brought back to Downton, and Matthew recovered (aside from the temporary paralysis). It was clear William was not going to make it and so Daisy agreed to a quick wedding. William died very shortly thereafter.
4. After the end of the war, Spanish flu came to Downton and several members of the household (permanent and visiting members) became ill. Who eventually died from the illness?

Answer: Lavinia

Those who were hit by the flu were Carson, Cora and Lavinia, Matthew's fiancee. Lavinia had seemed to be improving, but then took a turn for the worse and died.

Matthew felt that her death was his fault and that she'd really died of a broken heart. Shortly before she died, Lavinia overheard Matthew talking to Mary and implying that he loved Mary more but was going to marry Lavinia out of a sense of duty. Matthew felt very guilty after Lavinia died and for awhile wasn't sure that he could be with Mary after that.
5. This character only appeared in a couple of episodes, but her death in season two deeply affected one of the staff at the Abbey when he was convicted of killing her. Whose death led to a murder conviction for one of the servants?

Answer: Vera

It was the death of Vera Bates, Bates' estranged wife, that led to Bates being convicted of murder. He was sentenced to death at first, but it was converted to life in prison. Thanks to the tireless efforts of his wife Anna, Bates was eventually proved innocent and released from prison. It turned out that Vera poisoned herself in order to frame Bates for murder.
6. In the third season, the series' biggest tragedy yet happened when the youngest Crawley daughter, Sybil, died far before her time. How did she die?

Answer: Complications of childbirth

24-year old Sybil was loved dearly by everyone in the house, servants and family alike. She died shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Family physician Dr. Clarkson recognized the signs of preeclampsia in Sybil, but the high-priced doctor Robert had hired disagreed, and Robert sided with his hired doctor. Though Sybil seemed to be just fine right after the birth, a few hours later she was dead, leaving her husband Tom to raise their daughter, whom he named Sybil (usually called Sybbie).
7. The third seasons's Christmas special brought yet another big loss for the Crawley family when Matthew died suddenly. How did he die?

Answer: Car accident

Matthew died when his car went off the road at the very end of the third season Christmas special, leaving Mary a widow. Luckily he didn't leave Downton without an heir, as baby George was born just before Matthew's death. Matthew's death left Mary in deep mourning but she started to return to her old self in season four.
8. Sometimes visitors to Downton brought their own servants with them when staying the night. In season four, a valet who visited the Abbey with his master died in London. Whose servant met his end?

Answer: Lord Gillingham's

Lord Tony Gillingham was one of Mary's suitors in seasons four and five, and as such stayed at Downton Abbey a few times. He first brought his valet, Mr. Green, in the third episode of season four. While visiting, Green attacked and raped Anna. Anna tried to hide it from Bates, for fear that Bates would murder Green.

Anna eventually told Mary what happened and who did it, and Mary asked Gillingham to fire Green, no questions asked, to stop Green from ever coming to Downton again. Gillingham agreed but later returned Downton unexpectedly with some news - Green had been killed in a supposed traffic accident in London. At first the question was whether or not Bates had anything to do with it - but in season five it was Anna who was arrested for murder! Things turned out alright when the real murderer confessed, but it was another stressing ordeal for Mr. and Mrs. Bates.
9. Which of the following passed away in season five?

Answer: Robert's dog

Midway through the fifth season, Robert's beloved canine companion, Isis, became listless and despondent. She had fallen ill with cancer, and, in the season's seventh episode, Robert and Cora brought Isis to bed with them assuming she wouldn't last the night. That was the last we saw of Isis.
10. Edith's beau, Michael Gregson, was in the process of emigrating in the fourth season, and was never heard from again. In which city did he go missing?

Answer: Munich

Edith first met Gregson in season three, when he offered her a job writing a column for his magazine. They fell in love but there was a problem - Gregson was legally married to a woman committed to an insane asylum and the laws did not allow for a divorce in this circumstance. Gregson came up with a plan to become a German citizen, after which he could get a divorce under German law. He left for Germany in season four and Edith never heard from him again.

He was presumed dead for over a year, but his death was finally confirmed in the fifth season. He'd died almost immediately after arriving in Munich, in the Beer Hall Putsch. Poor Edith - lost another chance at love, and this time the father of the child she cannot legitimately claim.
