Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Nancy NOT say while trying to convince the modeling agent to take her on?

Answer: runs daily

She tells the agent she's willing to learn, that she rides horses, plays tennis, is taking a drama class at school and that she would be willing to cut her hair. She also tells him that her age range is 16 - 25, which Joan didn't seem to approve of.
2. How old is Nancy in this episode?

Answer: 18

When informed that Nancy wasn't accepted by the modeling agent, Tom replied that Nancy was only 18 and had a lot of failure to look forward to.
3. Where was Tom offered a new job?

Answer: Anchorage

Joan was telling Tom that she should take the photography job, especially as the paper won't last much longer with the strike and Tom hasn't been able to find another job. Tom replied that he had been offered a job by Templeton publishing, editing their new paper... in Anchorage.

Joan said she wouldn't move to Anchorage. Joan believed she had a right to contribute to the family's welfare.
4. Which was not an adjective used by Mary, while describing the paper management's stance regarding the strike?

Answer: insane

Tom had called Joan insane when she told him she wanted to get a job.
5. What does Tom claim he drinks when Mr. French suggests talking over a drink?

Answer: scotch

Mr. French is the head of the printers' union. He came over to the Bradford house to talk to Tom and suggests the pair talk over a drink. Tom then says he drinks scotch.

Earlier in the episode, Tom went over to the bar in the living room to have a drink, but all the bottles were empty.

'Over drinks' appeared to work - Mr. French said he would give the proposal to the printers in the morning and they should be back to work soon.
6. How did Nancy describe her feelings on Joan working?

Answer: it was a ridiculous charade

Nancy had earlier locked herself in her room and refused to eat. On the night Mr. French came over, Nancy asked Mary and Susan if they wanted to go to the movies. Susan had to study for a test and Mary didn't have any money. Nancy then offered to loan Mary the money.

When asked why she was in such a good mood, Nancy claimed that Joan was neglecting the family by carrying on with the ridiculous charade that she was a working woman.
7. When Susan gave Tom his dinner of a salad, what did Tom say he wanted instead?

Answer: cholesterol

Susan claimed Tom was polluting his body with too much cholesterol, so she was taking steps to correct the problem. Tom replied that he liked cholesterol, which Susan said was poison.

Mary handed over ketchup for Tom to put on top of the salad as a compromise.
8. What was missing from the bedroom after Tom settled the strike?

Answer: television

Joan came into the room and saw Tom staring at the television cart. She asked what he was doing and he replied that he was watching the news... or at least where the news should have been. Joan responded that she had forgotten to tell Tom that Nicholas and Julian had taken the television outside to camp out.

Tm said they must be roughing it - they had left the remote control behind.
9. Who did Julian say Tom reminded him of?

Answer: his grandfather

Julian was telling Tom that he had fun at the Bradford house and that his parents fought. Tom replied that he was glad Julian was comfortable at the Bradford house. That's when Julian said that Tom reminded him of his grandfather.
10. Having a job was the first time since what that Joan felt she was needed?

Answer: Adlai Stevenson's campaign

When Tom seemed surprised that she wanted to continue working after the threat of Tom's newspaper closing was gone, Joan replied it was the first time since Adlai Stevenson's presidential campaign that she felt she was needed for something other than mothering or being a housewife.

Tom responded that Adlai didn't have a husband and eight children. He also didn't believe Joan had a real job - she was working for futures. Joan liked working as it gave her an identity apart from Tom and the children. Tom responded that he'd always let her have an identity...
