Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why didn't Susan come home on Christmas Eve?

Answer: She wanted to get some snow

Susan came home, with Harold driving the sedan and she holding a pitcher of water with a little ice in it. She explained that she wanted to get some snow to bring back to everyone, so she and Harold drove to the mountains. She then asked why the station wagon was at the other end of town.
2. Who was left behind when the Bradfords went to claim their station wagon?

Answer: Abby

All the Bradfords (except Tommy, who was moping in his room for the entire episode) got into the van to go find the station wagon that Susan found at the other end of town. Nicholas was originally supposed to stay home as well, but he pointed out that he was the only person who had seen the man who stole all the family's gifts. Abby stayed home to call the police, then got Noreen to help her make dinner.
3. Who didn't want to go into the house to confront the burglar?

Answer: Harold

Harold wanted to wait and let the police arrest the man. The Bradfords, on the other hand, wanted to get in there to keep the person from escaping and find their gifts. When they went into the house, they found an old man (whom we later find out is named Sam) who explains he took the gifts because he had no money (Social Security not being what it used to be) and he wanted something for his ten grandchildren who lived in San Diego.
4. Who was against letting Sam off the hook for the theft?

Answer: Nancy

Nancy, David, and Tom thought that Sam should be sent straight to jail because he'd stolen from the family. The other children, however, were able to convince Tom to let Sam go as long as he gave back everything.

As the family were loading the station wagon back up with the gifts, the police arrived and thought a gang was stealing the gifts form the house. Then, the police recognized Susan as the girl who had been reported missing, and thought they were kidnappers as well.
5. What happened to the Bradford family's gifts?

Answer: impounded as evidence

While at Sam's house, we find out that Tom had gotten his 'best friend' (most likely Dr. Maxwell) a bottle of some sort (possibly liquor). He ends up giving Dr. Maxwell the claim check for the gift and mentioned that Dr. Maxwell could pick up his gift after February 8th, when Sam went to trial.

The rest of the gifts that had been stolen met the same fate: locked up in the jail.
6. One gift was found that was from Joan. Who was the recipient of the gift?

Answer: Tommy

While helping Abby prepare dinner, Noreen got the silver chalice from a shelf in the kitchen. Inside was a small wrapped gift with a tag that said it was for Tommy, from his mother. Noreen mentioned that Abby must like shopping early, and Abby explained that she wasn't his mother - she was his step-mother. Abby decided it would be best if Tom gave the gift to Tommy.

The silver chalice had something to do with a Bradford family tradition. Something about how Grandfather Bradford won the chalice in a poker tournament...
7. What was not one of the pictures Nicholas drew as a Christmas gift?

Answer: Tommy dressed like Superman

Nicholas's gifts were pictures of each family member. He drew the following:

Tom: King of the House
Abby: Abby surrounded by the kids with lots of hearts and "We love her" written
David: Holding up a barbell with lots of muscles
Mary: As a doctor leaning over a patient who is saying 'ouch'
Joanie: On a stage
Susan: Sky diving saying 'help' (an illusion to the Aunt Vi episode where Vi gives Susan sky diving lessons and Susan breaks her ankle)
Nancy: All dressed up as a beauty queen
Elizabeth: On the phone
Tommy's we don't see as he was upstairs moping and Nicholas only gives Tommy his gift as everyone's hugging in the last scene
8. Why was Tom reluctant to give Joan's gift?

Answer: He was afraid of the emotional response

Abby gave Tom the gift to give to Tommy. Tom, however, was reluctant to give it to Tommy as he didn't know how Tommy would handle receiving a gift from his dead mother, whom he clearly missed. Tom explained that each year, Joan would look for a special gift for each child, then wrap it and forget about it until the next Christmas.
9. Tom mentions a special gift Joan once gave Nancy. What was it?

Answer: antique compact

Tom mentioned to Abby that Joan once found an antique compact for Nancy two days after Christmas. When he asked Joan what she would do with it, Joan said she'd wrap it and give it to Nancy the next Christmas. Tom said that Nancy cherished the compact.
10. Abby saw everyone sulking in the living room and decided to try and do something to cheer them up. What was her suggestion?

Answer: Nicholas could give out his gifts

Abby brought over the bag with Nicholas's gifts and had Nicholas hand them out to everyone. She then mentioned that there was a family she knew back in Pasadena, her hometown, that didn't have a lot of money. David quipped that he couldn't believe there was a poor family in Pasadena and Joanie remarked the family must have been on display. Abby then continued with her story and said the family gave each other gifts that couldn't be bought.

The family gets the idea and runs around making gifts for everyone.
11. Joanie gave everyone a card with what she wishes she could give the person. What was not something she gave?

Answer: Greek God not named Harold

Some of Joanie's gifts were as follows:

Abby: Month-long honeymoon in Europe with Tom
Tom: Month-long honeymoon in Europe with Abby
Nicholas: Ability to be the oldest child for a day
Nancy: Greek God not named Harold
David: Greek Goddess not named Noreen
Elizabeth: Three phone lines and a secretary
Sam: A mansion with enough room for all his grandchildren

(The children convinced Tom to bail Sam out of jail. Sam came to dinner and complimented Abby on the dressing she made. However, did he mean dressing as in stuffing for the turkey or dressing, the kind you put on a salad?)

Mary gave the family (and their offspring) free medical care for life.

Susan gave everyone, including Sam, a coupon for free sports training, anything from motocross to skydiving.

We never see what Tom gave the family, although Abby tried peeking at what he was writing on the typewriter.

David gave the family a promise not to get so far in debt as to need to move back into the family house and that he would always welcome anyone who needed it.
12. Abby and Nicholas were playing checkers. Nicholas won.

Answer: True

Abby claimed that Nicholas was getting too good at checkers for her. She then asked Nicholas to help her make some popcorn. Nicholas found the gift for Tommy and Abby had to explain that it was Joan's last Christmas gift.
13. Where did Noreen end up going?

Answer: Monterey - with Harold

Harold tried sleeping on the couch in the sun porch. Noreen, sitting on the chair next to the couch, warned him to stretch before he got up, saying she'd slept on the couch the night before. Harold discovered both he and Noreen were trapped at the Bradford house (Harold's family had gone to Monterey without him and Noreen was having David drive her to Monterey). The pair decided to go to Monterey together.

Noreen called the Bradfords (collect, much to Tom's dismay) to tell David she'd gone off with Harold. And that she and Harold were in love.

When Tom was told that there would be two fewer people for dinner, he said 'good riddance!"
14. What did Dr. Maxwell give Tom for Christmas?

Answer: his column, perma-plaqued

Dr. Maxwell gave Tom the exact same thing that Donna had given him: His Christmas column perma-plaqued. Dr. Maxwell explained that he wanted to be original. Daisy gave the family fruit cake. After the Maxwells left, the family remarked that they hoped it wasn't like last year's fruit cake. (The expressions on the family's faces indicated that last year's fruit cake did not go over very well.)
15. What was Joan's gift?

Answer: Book

While in the sun porch, Abby was finally able to convince Tom to give Tommy Joan's gift. Tom walked through the living room and the other children realised what he was doing and asked if he wanted them to come with him. The whole family started up to Tommy's room when Tommy ran down the stairs on his way to his friend Danny's house. Tom gave Tommy the gift: a book of e.e. cummings, Joan's favourite author. Joan had inscribed the book to Tommy with a message that said showing emotions didn't make him less a man, it made him human.
