Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What well-known movie actor played Roy Slater (before he was a well-known movie actor)?

Answer: Jim Broadbent

Jim Broadbent has done very well for himself since "Only Fools and Horses". He's played Bridget Jones' father, Professor Kirke in the "Narnia" series, a Hogwarts professor, and Queen Victoria's uncle the king in "Young Victoria". I doubt anyone could have guessed his career would turn so successfully from TV to film. He is a very good actor and made Roy Slater very hate-able.
2. Which of the following police ranks did Slater not achieve before he left the force?

Answer: Superintendent

Slater went to school with Del, Boycie, and the rest of the gang. He was, to quote Del, "such a snide" that everyone either shunned him or picked on him. He got his revenge though when he joined the police force after leaving school. He sold his ex-classmates stolen goods, extorted bribes from them, and framed and arrested them for crimes they didn't commit. And he never, as Del put it, "let a silly thing like innocence get in the way."
3. How does Delboy escape prosecution when Slater catches him in possession of a stolen microwave?

Answer: He cons Slater into arranging immunity from prosecution

Slater returns to Peckham after being posted away for several years. But not as a patrolman, he is now a newly-promoted Detective Inspector. He is looking for a stolen microwave, and meets Rodney who (not knowing Slater's profession) invites his brother's old classmate back to the flat. Slater spots the stolen microwave and "invites" all three Trotters down to the station to explain.

He can only charge Del with receiving stolen goods, but he threatens to plant drugs on Rodney unless Del volunteers the actual thief's name. Del turns pale knowing he and Rodney will spend at least a year in prison and poor Granddad will be left alone in their dangerous neighbourhood.

He has no choice. But he will only co-operate if Slater grants him an Immunity from Prosecution. "I'll get it arranged right away Derek!" Slater cackles.

He knows once Del signs that bit of paper he can use him in the future for whatever he likes, or he'd let it be known on the streets Del is an informer. He laughs "Oh we're going to have a good future together you and I, Del, I can feel it!" Once Delboy has signed the Immunity, and Roy Slater has finished gloating, he asks "Who nicked the microwave off the back of the lorry?" Del smiles and said "_I_ did." motioning the signed agreement. Slater is almost in tears.
4. What crime is Slater charged with by his fellow police officers?

Answer: Diamond smuggling

Against Rodney's protestations, Del agrees to smuggle some diamonds from Amsterdam for Boycie. Slater has already caught all the previous couriers in the act and Boycie thought of using Del instead. At first everything seemed to be going well, except for Uncle Albert navigating the hired boat a tad, er...questionably.

They eventually make it to Holland, pay for the diamonds and Albert eventually finds the right way back to England across the North Sea. But as soon as the three Trotters get back to London, Slater captures them and Boycie.

But then, to everyone's astonishment, he lets them go and keeps the diamonds. Then Del realises the Dutch diamond seller is Slater's business partner - Slater has been running the smuggling racket all along! He lets someone else take the risk, arrests them back in England, and then sells the diamonds for himself. "You found me out, you rascal!" Slater cackles at Del. Slater is about to retire from the police and now he can retire in style.

He laughs as he walks away from the stunned Trotters.

He is still laughing, until he is arrested. It seems the police had figured out before Del what he was up to...
5. This question is for those who really pay attention: as a boy what game did Slater play with Delboy and the other kids?

Answer: Pirates

Whilst under arrest and stuck in Slater's office, Del is forced to listen to Roy reminisce about their days playing by the adventure playground. Slater is still bitter that Del and co made him walk the plank. "I must have been in that pond more times than a duck's head." the Inspector has a tantrum "I always wanted to be BLUEBEARD!". "Well you should have said." Del says. "I DID say, but you never let me!". "I did, once." Del recalls. Slater recalls too "Oh yeah I remember, that was the day Bluebeard had to walk the plank!"
6. Which unfortunate police officer was assigned to assist Slater when he was promoted to Chief Inspector?

Answer: Terry Hoskins

Whenever Del was under arrest at the police station Terry would whisper "Watch out for him - Slater's a nasty piece of work. The only people who 'ate 'im more than the villains is us coppers." Poor Terry's life was a misery. Slater would only allow him a meal break when the canteen was closed and frequently belittled him about his thinking or lack thereof. "You're not paid to think Hoskins." he sneered once "You're only paid to drive".

But Terry got his own back the day Roy confiscated smuggled diamonds from Del and Rodney. Terry drove the gloating Roy home, then deliberately took a wrong turning and Slater saw a police road block waiting for him.

His face paled, the game was up! He pleaded with Terry to let him go in exchange for some diamond money he'd hidden away. Terry just responded "You seem to forget sir, I don't think." Slater's face fell even further when Terry revealed a hidden microphone that had recorded everything he'd just said.
7. Why did Roy's parents never speak to him?

Answer: He had once arrested his father

Granddad cannot believe his ears when Del tells them that. Slater is "visiting" their flat and Del quickly gives him a beer before he sees any stolen goods. Roy protests "If there had been a way of avoiding it, I would have. But his rear light was defective." Del mutters "True, he'd only borrowed the bike to go down the fish 'n' chip shop 'n' all." Later when Granddad has passed away and his brother Albert has taken his place, Albert meet Slater's mother at the pub. Ruby Slater is upset about her son, who used to sit next to Albert's Great-nephew Delboy at school. "He had his whole life ahead of him." she sobs. "Motorcycle accident?" asks Uncle Albert. "No, he joined the police."
8. When Slater is finally released from prison how does he make contact with Delboy and co again?

Answer: Organises a school reunion

One day, out of the blue, Delboy, Denzil, Trigger and Boycie suddenly receive mysterious invitations to a school reunion at the pub that night. Mike the landlord doesn't know the name of the strange man who's organised it (though Trigger speculates it might be Jeremy Beadle). Rodney comes along and mentions this is just like an Agatha Christie story.

The other men pale, it suddenly dawns of them it might be their old headmaster. The doctors at the asylum said he'd never be allowed back in society, but what if he escaped? Then suddenly, the lights go off! Everyone panics, the door opens, a man's siloheutte appears and Denzil cries "Oh God! It's our old headmaster! It's 'Bend-Over' Benson!" But the lights go, and no, it's not "Bend-Over" Benson - it's someone even worse. "Slater!" everyone exclaims. Boycie mutters "I wish it had been our old headmaster." (Denzil mutters "I wish it had been Jeremy Beadle.") Slater tries to assure them he's not a cop anymore so they have nothing to fear. He was in town and organised this reunion. Specifically for these guys because he feels he owes them his deepest apologies.

Whilst in prison he realised how much he'd hurt them in the past by planting stolen items on them. He sobs, revealing his dad died recently and his mother doesn't want to know him. No one is impressed and he admits "Maybe this reunion wasn't such a good idea." But Del's heart of gold gives in and he convinces the others to give Slater a second chance. All the ex-copper's misdeeds are forgiven and forgotten. Shortly afterward they're all in Del and Rodney's flat laughing, drinking and reminiscing. But this turns out to be no accident on Slater's part...
9. Who turns out to have been married to Slater years ago?

Answer: Raquel, Del's other half

Delboy knew Raquel's ex-husband was a police officer. But he doesn't know it was none other than his worst enemy. He finds out the hard way after the reunion when everyone has left the flat except for Slater. Pregnant Raquel comes home and sees a familiar figure asleep on the couch.

She runs into the kitchen to tell Del who he is. He cannot believe Raquel's ex-husband is Slater the Slag! What a small world! He and Rodney try to get rid of Slater while Raquel hides in the kitchen, but it's too late - Slater has spotted a photo of her.

She has no choice but to emerge. A furious row escalates when Roy sees his wife has been "Fertilised by a TROTTER?!?!" Unfortunately this places Delboy in an awful predicament. He can't let Roy go because, although Slater is no longer a copper, he can cause just as much harm by revealing he was married to Raquel. No would trust Del or Trotters Independent Traders ever again! Roy knows this all too well and blackmails Del. Del has to let him stay at their flat and gives him money for booze, rental cars, etc.
10. How do Rodney and Del get rid of Roy Slater?

Answer: Threaten to inform the police about diamonds Slater hid

Slater is living on the high hog. He's staying with The Trotters, and eating and drinking at Del's expense down at the pub. He also enjoys taunting his ex-wife Raquel as she's carrying Del's baby. He is careful not to broadcast that fact or he won't be able to blackmail Del any longer.

He asks Raquel "Do you ever think back to out time together?" She replies "Some things remind me. Like repeats of 'Tenko'." But one night Del, Rodney and Uncle Albert have a look inside Slater's wallet. They discover a legal contract he wants Raquel to sign to waive all her rights to his money. So THAT is why he organised the school reunion! So he could get into Del's flat to ascertain it was the right woman and get her signature.

But what money? They thought he was skint.

Then they spot another piece of paper: a letter from a London Diamond Merchant. Slater left some diamonds with him years ago and if he sells them now he will be rich. Del and Rodney concoct a plan. They corner Roy at The Nag's Head the next day and confront him about what they know.

He just smirks, pats his pocket and says "You may have read my personal papers Derek, but that ain't proof. I've still got exhibit A. tucked up safe and sound in here." Del says "Rodney could I have exhibit B, please?" Rodney puts a fax-machine onto the table, and Slater sees it's actually a photocopier too. Oh dear. He turns pale. If Del sends a copy of his diamond correspondence to the police, they will know they missed some smuggled diamonds when he was arrested. This would mean a new trial and another prison sentence! "But that wouldn't worry you would it Roy?" Del smiles "'Cause you like reunions!" Slater, very pale, agrees to leave Peckham forever, never to bother Raquel again, give her 50% of his diamond money after the divorce and keep his mouth shut about Del living with the wife of an ex-copper. "Have a nice life Delboy," he murmurs one last time to his old classmate before slinking away. Laughing, Rodney and Delboy celebrate with champagne. Mike the landlord brings the bottle over, notices the fax machine and says "By the way Del, that fax machine you sold me. The photocopier on it don't work." Del and Rodney smile. "Yeah? That's strange. It don't work on OURS, either!"
