Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Trigger call Rodney?

Answer: "Dave"

The two men meet in the pilot episode and at the time Rodney can't be bothered correcting Trigger calling him "Dave". Three seasons later, at a tenants' meeting Rodney finally sighs and says "Trig, my name's not 'Dave' my name's 'Rodney'." Trigger frowns "You sure?" Good grief! Rodney assures Trigger that he has checked his birth certificate and passport; his name is definitely "Rodney"! This episode is unusual for another reason: when the chairman announces he needs a new vice-chairman, Trigger calls out "I nominate Rodney." he's finally got Rodney's name right.

But Rodney is annoyed about being nominated and doesn't notice!
2. How did Trigger get his nickname?

Answer: He resembles a horse

When Rodney (aka "Dave") and Trigger meet in the pilot episode, Rodney assumes it's because Trigger carries a gun. Trigger's real name is Colin but no one calls him that. Rodney is Del's new financial adviser, and during that meetings he points out Del owes Trigger more money than Trigger thought. (Needless to say, Delboy is less pleased about that than Trigger.) "With financial advisers like that," Del grumbles "Who needs a bleeding recession?!"
3. Who raised Trigger?

Answer: His grandparents

At his grandmother's funeral, Trigger tells Delboy and co how his grandparents took care of him after his mother left. Rodney asks "What about your dad?" Trigger says "He died a couple of years before I was born." Del and Rodney look at each other, puzzled.
4. As a teenager, Trigger had a crush on Agatha Christie.

Answer: False

At a pub gathering Rodney discusses Agatha Christie movies. Triggers remarks "I used to fancy her." The other men look at him strangely. Surely they have misheard Trigger? She was an old lady, country gardens, granny hats, etc. "Well I liked her." Trigger insists "I had a poster of her and everything. I saw her in that film 'Dr. Zhivago'." Boycie groans "That's JULIE Christie, you berk!".
5. What's the name of Trigger's niece whom Rodney and Delboy both fancied?

Answer: Lisa

Rodney used to play with Lisa when they were little children. But when she returns to London to visit her uncle the brothers cannot believe their eyes! She has grown into a very pretty and very bubbly young woman. Both men cannot resist inviting her round for dinner, determined to out-do the other and win her affection. Case in point: Del adjusts the controls on Rodney's sun-bed and makes his brother look like a tomato. Rodney gets his revenge by tricking Del into going hang-gliding, but the plan goes too far when Del is almost lost at sea.

But it turns out they shouldn't have bothered: Trigger reveals Lisa's already engaged!
6. In the pilot episode, the police are searching for the briefcases Trigger's selling.

Answer: False

In the pub Trigger swears to Rodney that the cops aren't looking for these briefcases (and as it happens he's telling the truth). But Rodney asks why then is Trigger looking so nervous? Trigger hisses "Because you never know when they're gonna START looking for them, do you?!"
7. What is wrong with the paint Trigger sells Del in the episode "The Yellow Peril"?

Answer: It's luminous

Del has bought lots of paint from Trigger but hasn't found a use for it yet (or even what colour it is). He anonymously rings a Chinese takeaway and says health officials are coming on a surprise inspection. So quickly Mr. Chin hires the Trotters to paint his kitchen. Everything seems to go well and they finish up and go home.

But that night Trigger comes around with more paint, and lets slip this paint is nicked from British Rail (they use it to paint signs in tunnels). Granddad demands "How can you see a sign in a tunnel? It's pitch black!" Trigger shakes his head and explains "No, no, it's luminous paint." and wonders why Del is looking so horrified. Didn't Del know? Del is even angrier when he recalls he has just painted Mum's gravestone, as well as Mr. Chin's kitchen!
8. What was the name of Trigger's grandfather?

Answer: Arthur

In the episode "Ashes To Ashes" Trigger's grandmother has just died, and he invites the three Trotters to her funeral (no one else turns up because Alice was such a miserable old cow). Granddad used to be friends with her and her husband Arthur, another road-sweeper who taught Trigger the trade. Trigger wishes he knows who his grandmother had an affair with and caused the marriage to break-up (even though they lived under the same roof till Arthur died). Trigger doesn't see Granddad quickly avert his eyes. Later back at the flat Del is examining some old urns of Alice and Arthur's. Granddad nearly has a heart-attack when they discover Arthur's ashes inside one! Del and Rodney do their best to get rid of the ashes.

In the end they leave the urn by the kerbside at the moment a road-sweeper comes by.

It was accidental, but Arthur's ashes get sucked up! Del remarks "This would be the equivalent of a Viking funeral at sea. Maybe he would have wanted it that way." Well, that's the end of that. Except...when they tell Trigger what happened, he says "But how do you know those were my grandfather's ashes? Nan was married twice." Del and Rodney angrily turn to Granddad...who's discovered ashes in another urn!
9. How long did Trigger spend in a younger offender's home when he was a teenager?

Answer: 18 months

Poor Trigger was set up by his ex-classmate Roy Slater. The crooked constable wanted revenge on Trigger for schoolyard pranks, so he planted stolen green-shield stamps on him. 20-odd years later Slater is trying to redeem himself at a school reunion. He apologises to Trigger, who says "Oh that's all right, Roy." Del and his mates can't believe their ears. Trigger winks and explains "When I come out, I got an electric blanket and a radio with 'em."
10. Trigger nicked a pork pie from the Nags Head pub.

Answer: True

In the episode "Yuppy Love" Del is hanging out in trendier clubs than the Nags Head. He has just seen "Wall Street" and thinks he can be the Gordon Gecko of London. He is surprised to see Trigger walk in one day. Trigger grumbles indignantly "Mike's barred me from the pub.

He accused me of stealing one of his pork pies!" The two men spend the next few hours fruitlessly chatting up women in the club, trying to be cool, and trying to impress the barman with their, er...style. But in the end Trigger leaves, handing his friend something. "Oh, you can have this pie Del. I didn't really want it."
11. In "The Chain Gang" how does Trigger raise the money to buy some gold chains for Del?

Answer: His aunt's necklace is pawned

Del and Rodney have met a retired jeweler named Arnie. He's offering to sell them a large amount of gold chains at a discount, yet very high price. Del cannot resist, and soon most of his friends and relations have invested in this scheme too. Once Trigger's aunt's necklace is pawned he can invest too.

But then unfortunately Arnie disappears with their money and the jewels. Del says "I'm sorry Trig. Do you want me to ring your aunt and explain?" Trigger shakes his head. "Oh no, don't do that Del.

She doesn't know she's pawned it yet!"
12. What's the name of Trigger's partner in crime?

Answer: "Monkey" Harris

Although "Monkey" is never actually seen in any episode his name is mentioned often. (Usually when the conversation turns toward prison or Trigger's illicit affairs.) One day the newly-promoted DI Roy Slater corners Trigger in the pub. He asks if he is still doing a "double-act" with Harris. "Er, no, no," Trigger quickly shakes his head "I ain't seen Monkey for a long time." He emphatically denies seeing anyone else, either. Slater shakes his head sadly "You really ought to eat more carrots, Trig."
13. In the episode "The Long Legs Of The Law" Delboy sells Trigger some stolen watches.

Answer: False

Actually it's the other way round. Del gives one to Rodney, who is quite chuffed since this is a waterproof watch and Del insists they aren't knocked off. But the timing could not have been worse. Rodney is now dating a policewoman called Sandra, and he gives her the watch as a gift. To make matters worse, be brings Sandra home one night and Del sees the watch on her wrist. Rodney hisses angrily "Are you sayin' these watches are 'ot?!" Del hisses back "Put it this way: they're so 'ot is advisable to wear OVEN-GLOVES when windin' 'em up!"
14. In the episode "Little Problems" Trigger sells Del some mobile phones.

Answer: False

Actually Delboy buys them from Mickey Pearce and his new partner Jevon. He doesn't think anything is wrong, until he's unable to sell them. Next day Mickey and Jevon come into the pub with black eyes, bruises and arms in a sling. They spot Del who's talking to Trigger, and explain they bought the phones from the dreaded Driscoll Brothers. Del turns pale.

The notorious brothers and their henchmen are obviously displeased Mickey hasn't paid them yet, so they'll be after him next! Just then, the Driscolls' car pulls up outside and Del hisses "Quick! Everyone hide upstairs!" Once upstairs they hide behind a curtain in the dance hall.

They keep mum as they hear large footsteps approach. Then Del notices they're not alone behind the curtain. He hisses "Trigger, what are you doing here?" Trigger whispers back "You said 'Everyone upstairs'." Del groans, but it's too late because the gangsters walk in.

The heroes hold their breath. The thugs don't see anyone so they leave. In the semi-darkness Trigger nudges Del, "They've gone." But he nudges Del's breast-pocket, which contains one of the phones. Trigger's hand activates the aerial - which goes right up into Del's nose! Needless to say, The Driscolls cannot fail to hear Del's swearing...
15. Which actor plays our lovable road-sweeper?

Answer: Roger Lloyd-Pack

Roger Lloyd-Pack has also played Barty Crouch Snr in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", a French police inspector in "Hercule Periot and the Blue Train" and a bunch of other roles. He probably never guessed when he first portrayed the not-terribly-bright thief Trigger that "Only Fools and Horses" would last almost 20 years.
