Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode "When The Bough Breaks" might be seen a commentary on what contemporary social issue?

Answer: The perils of modern technology

While the kidnapping of children, as featured in this episode, is certainly a form of child abuse, "When The Bough Breaks" more obviously speaks to the dangers of relying too heavily on technology. The Aldeans have used a planetary shield/cloaking device to hide their planet from outsiders for many generations. The Enterprise determines, however, that this shield has left Aldea susceptible to harmful solar radiation and rendered the native population infertile. Luckily for them, Beverly Crusher is a top-of-the-line doc!
2. How does the "microbrain" featured in "Home Soil" refer to human beings?

Answer: "Ugly bags of mostly water"

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Federation terraformers on Velara III accidentally endanger the survival of a native crystal-based life form, collectively referred to as a "microbrain." In an attempt to safeguard their existence, the microbrain kills one of the terraformers, Arthur Malencon, and very nearly harms Lt. Commander Data.
3. Admiral Gregory Quinn warns Captain Picard of some ominous changes occurring at the heart of Starfleet in "Coming of Age." In which later episode is the full nature of these warnings revealed?

Answer: Conspiracy

The events of "Conspiracy" reveal that a sentient parasitic life form has compromised the highest ranks of Starfleet Command. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time of the episode "Coming of Age," Dexter Remmick, the acerbic officer from the Inspector General's office who seeks to uncover operational problems aboard the Enterprise, is the host of the parasites' mother creature.
4. Of the following, which event do viewers get to see for the first time in "Heart of Glory"?

Answer: How Geordi views the world through his VISOR

An away team from the Enterprise boards the disabled Talerian freighter Batris to search for survivors. This allows Lieutenant La Forge the opportunity to use the visual acuity transmitter, a device that relays the visual information Geordi perceives with his VISOR to the viewscreen of the Enterprise bridge. The first death of a regular cast member occurs a few episodes later, with the demise of Lt. Yar in "Skin of Evil." Viewers see a Romulan Warbird for the first time in "The Neutral Zone," while a bat'leth isn't used until the fourth season in "Reunion."
5. Which Federation ship does the Echo Papa 607 destroy prior to the events of "The Arsenal of Freedom"?

Answer: USS Drake

Commander Riker was old friends with the captain of the USS Drake, Paul Rice, and was also offered command of that vessel. An illusion of Rice appears to Riker on the planet Minos, shortly before the Echo Papa 607 launches its first attack on the Enterprise away team.

The destructions of the Saratoga (24th- Century vessel), Equinox and Odyssey are shown in the episodes "Emissary" ("DS9"), "Equinox, Part II" ("VOY"), and "The Jem' Hadar" ("DS9"), respectively.
6. In the episode "Symbiosis," the Brekkians and Ornarans seemingly benefit from a symbiotic relationship: the Brekkians supply a drug the Ornarans require to treat a plague on their planet, while the Brekkians rely upon the Ornarans' trade to sustain their economy. What is the name of this pivotal drug?

Answer: Felicium

Dr. Crusher and the crew of the Enterprise deduce that felicium cured the Ornaran plague many years ago; the Ornarans' need of the narcotic stems purely from addiction, and the Brekkians know this. "Symbiosis" presents Picard with a moral dilemma vis-à-vis the Prime Directive: he cannot interfere with either society by revealing to the Ornarans that the Brekkians have been exploiting them but is likewise uncomfortable letting the situation stand.

A resolution presents itself after the Captain refuses to proceed with repairs on the Onarans' damaged vessel.

He realizes that without a means of transporting the felicium, the Onarans will eventually withdraw from the drug and recognize that the plague no longer exists within their population.
7. Although Lt. Tasha Yar is killed in the episode "Skin of Evil" by the malevolent entity Armus, Denise Crosby's name remained in the opening credits for the duration of the first season.

Answer: True

Interestingly, the last episode Crosby worked on that featured Lt. Yar as a regular character was "Symbiosis," which premiered before "Skin of Evil" despite its later production. Lt. Yar returns in the episodes "Yesterday's Enterprise" and "All Good Things..." (with footage of her used in "The Measure of a Man," "Shades of Gray," and "The Most Toys"), while Crosby portrays Sela, the half-Romulan daughter of Tasha Yar, in several season four and season five episodes.
8. The Manheim Effect is characterized by "hiccups" in time, the effects of which are observed aboard the Enterprise as they approach Manheim's home on Vandor IV. Which three characters encounter doubles of themselves aboard a turbolift as a result of this strange phenomenon?

Answer: Picard, Riker, Data

Data later encounters two copies of himself down on Vandor IV while attempting to seal the time distortions in "We'll Always Have Paris." This is the first time-travel episode featured on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (unless you count Q's escapades in "Encounter at Farpoint" and "Hide and Q").
9. In "Conspiracy," an infected Admiral Quinn arrives on board the Enterprise with an unintegrated parasite. For whom is it intended?

Answer: Crusher

Although Quinn ultimately tries to infect Riker with this parasite, he notes that it was originally intended for Dr. Crusher. Meanwhile, Captain Picard has beamed down to Starfleet Command, where Admirals Aaron and Savar intend to infect him. Picard and Riker finally neutralize the parasitic threat by gruesomely killing Lt. Commander Remmick and destroying the mother creature inhabiting him. "Conspiracy" leaves fans with one of the most interesting unresolved cliffhangers in "Star Trek" lore, as Remmick is able to send out a homing beacon shortly before he is killed.
10. "The Neutral Zone" marks the first appearance of the Romulans in "Star Trek: The Next Generation." This episode also famously anticipates the introduction of another long-term Federation adversary. Which is it?

Answer: Borg

Indeed, the presence of the Borg is hinted at in this season one finale. The several Romulan and Federation outposts mysteriously destroyed along the Romulan-Federation Neutral Zone would later be mentioned in the second-season episode "Q Who?", which formally introduces the Borg.

A planet the Enterprise encounters when they are propelled by Q out of Federation space exhibits the same damage as that witnessed along the Neutral Zone. The Cardassians aren't introduced until season four's "The Wounded," while the Dominion and Species 8472 are property of "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager," respectively.
