Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To which island nation in Africa did teams travel in Leg 7?

Answer: Seychelles

In the beginning of Leg 7, teams departed from L'ORCCA in Epernay, France and were told to fly from Paris to the island of Mahe in the Seychelles, a series of islands in the Indian Ocean. To do this, all teams needed to drive themselves from the Champagne region of France to the Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris. Because of the remoteness and lack of flights to this African nation in the Indian Ocean, all six teams were placed onto the same flight that morning.
2. How many departure times were available to teams upon their arrival at the helicopter kiosk in Leg 7?

Answer: Two

Upon arriving on the island of Mahe in the Seychelles, teams were required to search for a kiosk just outside the airport terminal for their next clue and a row of numbers. Once teams took a number, they would be departing in that order only mere hours later on helicopters.

The first three teams would leave one hour before the last three teams. Most of the front-runners were able to obtain earlier numbers because they vouched for seats closer to the front of the plane in Paris. When they were dropped off, teams found a Detour.
3. In the 'Turtle Toddle' Detour task in Leg 7, teams needed to lure a tortoise with which of these?

Answer: Banana

Arriving on the island of La Digue, teams came upon the clue box containing the Detour task for this leg of the race. In this, teams chose either 'Turtle Toddle' or 'Ox Trot'. In 'Turtle Toddle', completed by Steve and Allie, teams needed to grab a banana and choose a tortoise to race down a marked race lane using the fruit to entice them.

After this, teams needed to carry a stalk of bananas (one for each member) one and a half miles to a marked stall to get their clue. The other task, 'Ox Trot', teams needed to fill a wagon with coconuts, then guide an ox one and a half miles to the same stall with their coconuts in tow. If teams missed a coconut in their pile, they would need to go back and get it to receive their clue.
4. For the Road Block task in Leg 7, team members needed to collect which submerged item?

Answer: Bottle

After the Detour, teams were told to hop into some nearby boats and have the driver take them to St. Pierre Island where they would be handed their next clue. This would be the Road Block. Here, one member of each team needed to dive into the water and search for a submerged crate containing seven bottles, one of which they would need to bring back to the boat.

When they did this, they would need to have their driver pull up close to the shore and upon landing they could open their bottle. Steve, Jordan, Brent, Louie, Jet, and Brandy finished this.
5. Which team was first to arrive at the Pit Stop in Leg 7?

Answer: Steve and Allie

When teams landed on the shore, they opened their bottles to find a map leading to their next Pit Stop, the Paradise Sun Hotel down the beach. Steve and Allie were first to arrive (though they left all of their bags behind at the Detour and would not be able to claim them). For their victory they both won $7,000 (each) as well as dinner on the beach, massages, and as much 7-Up as they could drink (courtesy of 7-Up, this being the seventh leg of the race).

After tons of mistakes by several teams in this leg, it was Jet and Cord who arrived at the mat in last place.

The two of them were spared by a non-elimination leg, though.
6. In Leg 8, teams flew to which Asian country to complete their tasks?

Answer: Malaysia

Departing from the Paradise Sun Hotel in the evening, teams needed to take a late night ferry (at 2:00am) back to Mahe Island's airport, then fly themselves over five thousand miles to the city of Penang, Malaysia. To do this, all six remaining teams boarded the same plane in the morning, transferred in Dubai, UAE, and headed east arriving the next day, twenty-one hours later.

As soon as they arrived, teams hopped into taxis to take them to the Snake Temple in Bayan Lepas.
7. In the Detour task in Leg 8, the 'Buddhist Tradtion' task was completed by how many teams?

Answer: Five

Upon their arrival at the Snake Temple, teams needed to pick their Detour option. In this task, teams either chose 'Buddhist Tradition' or 'Chinese Custom'. In 'Buddhist Tradition', teams needed to visit a Buddhist temple known as Tien Kong Than and carry several incense sticks to the top of the building, one hundred fifty stairs up. Once teams lit their incense, they would receive their next clue.

In 'Chinese Custom', teams headed to a local park to balance large, 32-foot flags on their foreheads. If both members got the flags to the far end of a field without them falling, they would receive their next clue. Only Jet and Cord attempted 'Chinese Custom' while everyone else finished 'Buddhist Tradition'.
8. In Leg 8, Jet and Cord had to complete a Speed Bump task which involved which local drink?

Answer: Tea

After their Detour tasks, teams took taxis to their next destination, the village of Teluk Bahang. Here, teams needed to look for a clue box outside Sri Singamuga Kaliamman Temple. This is where Jet and Cord, the last place team from the previous non-elimination leg, needed to complete a Speed Bump. For this task, the two of them needed to go to a local spice garden five kilometers away and identify a spice by smell.

Then, they needed to hand a cup of tea made with that spice to a guru to be able to return to the race.
9. Which team member completed the offering Road Block task in Leg 8?

Answer: Carol

At Kuil Sri Singamuga Kaliamman Temple, teams found their Road Block task for this leg. In this, one member of each team was required to break into a pile of coconuts and find one with brightly coloured insides. Then, they needed to use a piece of this to construct a small offering for good luck which would be cast out to sea before they received their next clue from a waiting guru in the water. Jet, Carol, Louie, Caite, Jordan, and Allie completed this one.
10. Which team was eliminated in the end of Leg 8?

Answer: Steve and Allie

After the Road Block, teams took taxis to their eighth Pit Stop, Pinang Peranakan Mansion in George Town, Malaysia. Here, Jet and Cord, despite a Speed Bump handicap, were the first to arrive (their third victorious leg of the race) and they won a trip for two to Maui from Travelocity.

In the end, Steve and Allie ended up dropping to last having dealt with difficult cabs and the wrong Detour choice. They became the sixth team eliminated from the race.
